Clifton (Kilmarnock, Virginia)

Kilmarnock is a town in Lancaster and Northumberland counties in the U.S. Commonwealth of Virginia. The population was 1,487 at the 2010 census. It is located near the mouth of the Rappahannock River and is located within the Northern Neck George Washington Birthplace American Viticultural Area winemaking appellation. There is a small hospital in the town. Lancaster Middle School, grades 4–8, is also located in town. Approximately 500 students attend the school. The town was named after Kilmarnock, in Scotland.

Bluff Point Graded School No. 3 is a historic school building located near Kilmarnock, Northumberland County, Virginia. It was built in 1912–1913, and is a one-story, two room balloon frame building. A rear kitchen and bathroom addition was added in 1937. It features a wide front porch under the roof line. It was used as a schoolhouse until 1932, and subsequently adapted by the Bluff Point Methodist Church for use as The Community House. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Ditchley is a historic plantation house located near Kilmarnock, Northumberland County, Virginia. It was built in 1762, and is a two-story, Georgian style brick mansion with a hipped roof. It consists of a five bay main block flanked by one-story wings. The house was renovated and modernized in the 1930s by noted philanthropist Jessie Ball duPont (1884-1970). Also on the property are two contributing smokehouses and the Lee family cemetery and site of a kitchen building. Original built in 1687. This plantation was a grant to Col. Richard Lee I and was named for a Lee estate near Oxford, England. House was built by Kendall Lee, grandson of Richard Lee and son of Captain Hancock Lee, Hon. (1653–1709) and Mary Kendall (1661–1694). It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Cobbs Hall is a historic plantation house located at Kilmarnock, Northumberland County, Virginia. It was built in 1853, on the foundations of an earlier dwelling of the same design. It is a two-story, five-bay, double pile brick dwelling with a gable roof. The front and rear facades feature similar porches supported by Tuscan order columns. The ends have two semi-exterior end chimneys flanking the peak of the gable. Also on the property are the contributing Cobbs Hall graveyard containing Lee family remains, the remains of a 1+1⁄2-story brick dwelling, and a brick meat house. Cobbs Hall is one of the noted Northern Neck plantations associated with the Lee family of Virginia since the middle of the 17th century. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

Christ Church is a historic Episcopal church in Lancaster County, Virginia, north of Irvington. Built in 1732-35, it is notable for its unique Georgian design, and is one of the best-preserved colonial churches in the southern United States. The church is the only colonial Virginia church that still has its original high-backed pews and one of two that has maintained its original three-tiered pulpit.
