Ditchley (Kilmarnock, Virginia)

Cobbs Hall is a historic plantation house located at Kilmarnock, Northumberland County, Virginia. It was built in 1853, on the foundations of an earlier dwelling of the same design. It is a two-story, five-bay, double pile brick dwelling with a gable roof. The front and rear facades feature similar porches supported by Tuscan order columns. The ends have two semi-exterior end chimneys flanking the peak of the gable. Also on the property are the contributing Cobbs Hall graveyard containing Lee family remains, the remains of a 1+1⁄2-story brick dwelling, and a brick meat house. Cobbs Hall is one of the noted Northern Neck plantations associated with the Lee family of Virginia since the middle of the 17th century. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

Bluff Point Graded School No. 3 is a historic school building located near Kilmarnock, Northumberland County, Virginia. It was built in 1912–1913, and is a one-story, two room balloon frame building. A rear kitchen and bathroom addition was added in 1937. It features a wide front porch under the roof line. It was used as a schoolhouse until 1932, and subsequently adapted by the Bluff Point Methodist Church for use as The Community House. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve is a 204-acre (0.83 km2) Natural Area Preserve located in Northumberland County, Virginia. It preserves various types of habitat, including tidal and non-tidal wetlands, undeveloped beaches, dunes, and upland forests. Among the species living on the property is the northeastern beach tiger beetle, as well as other rare invertebrates. Hughlett Point is also an important staging area for various species of migrating bird. Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve is owned and maintained by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, and is open to the public. The preserve includes a parking area, trails, boardwalk, viewing platform, and educational signs. Access to portions of the shoreline is seasonally restricted to encourage use of the habitat by shore birds and other sensitive species.

Hurstville is a historic plantation house located at Kilmarnock, Northumberland County, Virginia. It was built about 1777, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, three-bay, double pile brick dwelling with a steep gable roof. It measures 28 feet by 30 feet, and features exterior end chimneys with two sets of tiled weatherings and a beveled water table. Also on the property are the contributing Ball family cemetery and the site of the Cress Field dwelling. In 1940, Hurstville was purchased by the noted philanthropist, Jessie Ball duPont, who had the house restored as a residence for her sisters. The majority of the markers in the Ball family cemetery are beautifully designed 1920s gray granite markers erected over the graves of members of the Ball family and installed under the direction of Jessie Ball duPont. A portion of the property was originally part of Cress Field, the ancestral Ball family home. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Shiloh School is a historic one-room school building located near Kilmarnock, Lancaster County, Virginia. It was built in 1906, and is a one-story, three-bay, simple frame building measuring 20 feet by 34 feet. It sits on a brick foundation and has a standing seam metal gable roof. Jessie Ball duPont (1884-1970) taught at the school in 1906–1907. It was used as a schoolhouse until 1929, and subsequently used for farm storage. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Clifton is a historic home located at Kilmarnock, Northumberland County, Virginia. It was built about 1785, and is a two-story, Georgian style frame dwelling with brick nogging. It is topped by a gable roof and the exterior is finished in plain, circular-sawn weatherboards. It is a rare example of a four-square plan with central chimney, combined with a front passage and paired stairs. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Kilmarnock is a town in Lancaster and Northumberland counties in the U.S. Commonwealth of Virginia. The population was 1,487 at the 2010 census. It is located near the mouth of the Rappahannock River and is located within the Northern Neck George Washington Birthplace American Viticultural Area winemaking appellation. There is a small hospital in the town. Lancaster Middle School, grades 4–8, is also located in town. Approximately 500 students attend the school. The town was named after Kilmarnock, in Scotland.
