Artists Space

Abasement is a monthly concert series that takes place in downtown Manhattan, focused on experimental music. It started in 2015 at Max Fish, a bar which held connections to various avant-garde communities. Founder and proprietor of Max Fish, Ulli Remkus, was involved in the Colab scene, and was known for employing artists and musicians. When Max Fish closed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the concert series relocated to Artists Space, where it has taken place since 2022. Artists Space is known for a history of engagement with experimental music and performance in downtown New York, having hosted early performances by bands such as Sonic Youth, DNA, and James Chance & the Contortions. At Artists Space in 1978, Brian Eno recorded No New York, a compilation of the No Wave scene of the time. Abasement has been curated by Joe Frivaldi and Rob Mayson since 2015. Frivaldi is a member of experimental rock band Electroputas. Mayson DJs Italo-Disco under the name Roboto's Gang on East Village Radio. Since the concert series began, Abasement has always been structured by four performing artists, a guest DJ, and a projectionist. Media artist Bradley Eros is known for projecting from his slide-film collection. Performing artists are enaged in genres such as free improvisation, jazz, noise, minimalism, avant-folk, and experimental composition.

The Mudd Club was a nightclub located at 77 White Street in the TriBeCa neighborhood of Lower Manhattan in New York City. It operated from 1978 to 1983 as a venue for underground music and counterculture events. It was opened by Steve Mass, Diego Cortez and Anya Phillips.

Art in General was a non-profit contemporary art exhibition space known for its vibrant and ground-breaking projects as a formidable and longstanding New York City alternative space, focused on giving meaningful resources and opportunities to artists early on in their careers. Founded in 1981 by artists Martin Weinstein and Teresa Liszka and originally located in the General Hardware building in New York City — hence the organization's name, Art in General — the institution produced and presented distinctive programs and exhibitions featuring new work by local and international artists.[1] Since its first exhibition in 1982, Art in General provided spaces for artists to display unconventional work and exchange ideas with their peers for almost 40 years, making it one of the longest-standing artist-founded non-profit artist organizations in New York City. Art in General organized exhibitions; commissions new art projects; hosted national and international artist residency programs; and facilitated regular free public programs with renowned artists, critics and curators. More than 2,000 artists exhibited their work at Art in General in a wide range of disciplines—painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, installation art, audio, video art, performance art and new media art.

Mmuseumm is a modern natural history museum located in lower Manhattan in New York City, dedicated to its signature curatorial style of "Object Journalism" and draws parallels to the older cabinet of curiosities model.

Pearl River Mart is an Asian-American retail brand and family-run business in New York City. The business was founded in 1971 in Chinatown, Manhattan, as Chinese Native Products by Ming Yi Chen and a group of student activists from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Chen has said that she and her colleagues "wanted to create a small window into the Chinese culture". Its products include braided straw slippers, paper lanterns, cheongsams, cotton Mary Janes, and copies of Mao's Little Red Book. Pearl River Mart has become a New York City institution. The business has an art gallery in its main location, and hosts in-store events and performances.

Santos Party House was a New York City nightclub located at 96 Lafayette Street between Walker and White Streets in the TriBeCa neighborhood of downtown Manhattan. Originally named the "Lafayette Street Jungle Gym", Santos Party House was recognized as the "Best New Nightclub" by Paper magazine's Annual Nightlife Awards, and has also won awards for its parties, sound system, lighting, and dance floor. The nightclub was a two-level, 8,000-square-foot (740 m2) music venue designed by Ronald Castellano to function as a concert hall, dance club, and lounge. It took the partners, including noted musician Andrew W.K., three years to acquire a cabaret license and finish the creation of the space, with the downstairs space opening on May 14, 2008, and the upstairs space opening on June 1, 2008. In total, the venue features three bars, black walls and ceilings, dark wood floors, tall columns, and an array of ever-changing decorations.Santos Party House's last night of operation was May 29, 2016, on which it hosted the controversial punk festival Oi! Fest. The venue received backlash due to Oi! Fest's association with neo-Nazism.

The Ahrens Building is a seven-story Romanesque Revival building in the Civic Center neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The building's design, by architect George Henry Griebel, blends polychrome brickwork, terra cotta and metal over a limestone base. The building was designated a New York City Landmark in 1992.

254–260 Canal Street, also known as the Bruce Building, is a building on the corner of Lafayette Street in the Chinatown neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It was constructed in 1856–57 and designed in the Italian Renaissance revival style. The cast-iron elements of the facade may have been provided by James Bogardus, a pioneer in the use of cast iron in architecture. The building was constructed for George Bruce, a prosperous printer and inventor of new technologies in the printing industry, which was then one of New York's leading industries. It was converted to offices in 1987 by architect Jack L. Gordon.The use of cast-iron columns in the large, five-story tall building allowed for the installation of large windows that improved manufacturing conditions and efficiency. The lot had become available because a lumber mill standing on the site had recently been destroyed by fire, making fire-retardant cast-iron construction attractive. The mildly Italianate style of the building, makes it a particularly handsome example of nineteenth century industrial architecture. It has been called "Beautiful!" and "an important early example of cast-iron architecture in New York City". If the cast iron did in fact come from Bogardus' iron works, the building would be "the largest and most important of his extant works."The building was designated a New York City landmark in 1985, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Postmasters is a contemporary art gallery located in Manhattan's Tribeca neighborhood, owned and directed by Magda Sawon and Tamas Banovich. The Postmasters gallery opened in the East Village in December 1984, moved to SoHo in 1989, and relocated to Chelsea in September 1998. In June 2013 Postmasters moved to 54 Franklin Street in Tribeca, taking over a 4,500-square-foot (420 m2) ground-floor space complete with large functional basement.The gallery has a history of exhibiting work in media that is challenging for a commercial art gallery, including the work of several Net.artists and political activists. For example, Maciej Wisniewski's media-rich e-mail software Netomat was exhibited as an artwork at the gallery in 1999 before being exhibited at the Whitney Museum of Art in 2000. The gallery's decision to exhibit software as an art form engages the Marshall McLuhan-coined concept "The medium is the message" by updating it with Wisnieski's belief that the artist's role is to challenge the existing notion of software development and distribution.' And in May 2010, Chatroulette became both medium and subject for artists Eva & Franco Mattes AKA 0100101110101101.ORG.On September 6, 2001, German-born artist Wolfgang Staehle, installed three live-feed video projections in the gallery, one of which was a panoramic view of Lower Manhattan, which would remain on view for the rest of the month. The feed captured the terrorist attacks of September 11th, transforming a fixed image of the city into what the art critic Roberta Smith of The New York Times called "a live history painting." In 2007, Hong Kong-based artist and Internet activist Kenneth Tin-Kin Hung exhibited a video critical of the George W. Bush Administration entitled "Because Washington Is Hollywood for Ugly People".On occasion, Sawon has allowed artists to direct the public's attention to her own role as an art dealer. In 1992 the gallery hosted an exhibition of work by Silvia Kolbowski that featured posters of the gallery itself. In an event called "Ask the Dealer," during the month-long Hashtag Class series at Winkleman Gallery in 2010, Sawon promised to truthfully answer any question asked of her regarding her experience as a gallerist.

Firehouse, Engine Company 31 is a historic fire station located at 87 Lafayette Street between Walker and White Streets in the Civic Center neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It was built in 1895 and designed by architects Napoleon LeBrun & Sons, who built it in the style of chateau in the Loire Valley of France from the early 16th-century.The building was designated a New York City Landmark in 1966 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The fire department vacated the building in November 1972, and it is currently occupied by the Downtown Community Television Center (DCTV).

The Downtown Community Television Center or DCTV is a community media center located in Manhattan's Civic Center on Lafayette Street. It was founded in 1972 by spouses documentary film director Jon Alpert and Keiko Tsuno.
