Shawsville Historic District

Shawsville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Montgomery County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,310 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Blacksburg–Christiansburg Metropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses all of Montgomery County, Virginia, and the city of Radford.

Maple Grove Farm is a historic farm property on Boners Run Road in Shawsville, Virginia. The farm complex includes an early 20th-century Colonial Revival farmhouse and a number of outbuildings, including a small log house that dates to the early period of the property's agricultural use. The property also includes a small mill complex. The land was part of a large tract given to Ephraim Vause in 1748, and developed later in the 18th century by the Madison family. The property was used for dairy and cattle production for most of the 20th century.The farm was listed on the "National Register of Historic Places "in 1991.

Fotheringay is a historic plantation home located near Elliston, Montgomery County, Virginia. The house was built about 1796, and is a two-story, five bay brick dwelling with a hipped roof and deep two-story rear ell. It features a projecting two-level provincial type portico. The house was originally built as a three bay dwelling with the portico on the southernmost bay. It was expanded to the full five bays in the 1950s. It was the home of Col. George Hancock (1754–1820).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.

Rife House is a historic home located at Shawsville, Montgomery County, Virginia. It was built in 1905, and is a two-story, rectangular Queen Anne style frame dwelling with a flat-topped hipped roof with cast iron ornamental cresting. It features a one-story, curved, wraparound porch with Doric order columns on pedestals and equipped with a turned balustrade. Also on the property is a contributing frame outbuilding.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

William Barnett House is a historic home located at Alleghany Springs, Montgomery County, Virginia. It is a long two-story, log and frame structure consisting of a number of elements of different dates. The earliest section may date to 1813, and is the central log section with a two-story frame or log addition and adjacent room and a frame two-room section added in the mid-19th century. It has a rear wing and is topped by a standing seam metal gable roof. It features a two-story ornamental porch that spans the entire front of the building with chamfered posts and sawn balusters. Also on the property are a contributing two-story, single-pen log kitchen; a small stone shed-roofed greenhouse; and a corn crib.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Brush Harbor is an unincorporated community in Montgomery County, Virginia, United States. Brush Harbor is located along State Route 636 7.5 miles (12.1 km) east-northeast of Christiansburg. The Nealy Gordon Farm was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Alleghany Springs Springhouse is a historic spring house located on the former grounds of Alleghany Springs, at Alleghany Springs, Montgomery County, Virginia. It was built about 1890, and is a two-tier, rustic, hip-roofed, octagonal pavilion. The structure is supported on rough cedar posts with complex intertwined knots of rhododendron branches and roots forming brackets, railings, and even vaulted "ceilings." At the center of the structure is the Alleghany Spring, that has been blocked.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Alleghany Springs is an unincorporated community in Montgomery County, Virginia, United States. Alleghany Springs is located along State Route 637 7.9 miles (12.7 km) east of Christiansburg. Alleghany Springs contained a post office from 1854 until the 1940s. The Alleghany Springs Springhouse and William Barnett House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Eastern Montgomery High School, built during 1999 and 2000, is located in Elliston, Virginia and is one of four high schools in Montgomery County, Virginia. The school's mascot is the Mustang, and the school colors are maroon, black and white.

Barnett House, also known as Big Spring, is a historic home located near Elliston, Montgomery County, Virginia. The house was built about 1808, and underwent a radical transformation in the early 20th century. It is a two-story, five bay brick dwelling with a single pile central passage plan. The front facade features a one-story wraparound porch through the two-story portico across the facade. Also on the property is a contributing stuccoed frame meathouse.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Elliston is a census-designated place (CDP) in Montgomery County, Virginia, United States. It lies between the city of Roanoke and the town of Christiansburg in the southwestern part of the state. The population as of the 2010 Census was 902. It is home to a small fire department, an elementary school, two gas stations, a train stop, and several churches. Most of its residents commute to larger towns. A set of railroad tracks separates the northwestern part of the town from the rest. US highway 11-460 further divides the town into two distinct neighborhoods, "Oldtown," which formed along the Valley Road in the 1850s, and "The Brake," a predominantly African-American area that developed after the Civil War. Originally known as Big Spring, the town's depot was an important stopping point on the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad and later the Norfolk and Western. In the late 1880s, investors hoped to create a large industrial and railroad center there, to be known as Carnegie City. Instead, the railroad chose the Roanoke County town of Big Lick, later Roanoke, as the location for its main shops. The Barnett House, Big Spring Baptist Church, Pompey Callaway House, Fotheringay, and Madison Farm Historic and Archeological District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Pompey Callaway House is a historic home located near Elliston, Montgomery County, Virginia, United States. The house was built about 1910, and is a two-story, three bay brick dwelling with a single pile central passage plan. Its builder, Pompey Callaway, was an ex-slave from Franklin County. It is one of the most substantial houses built for an African-American owner in Montgomery County before 1920.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
