The community is part of the Reno–Sparks Metropolitan Statistical Area and Interstate 580, U.S. Route 395 and U.S. Route 395 Alternate run through it and act as a divider between the eastern and western halves of the valley.

Steamboat Springs is a small volcanic field of rhyolitic lava domes and flows in western Nevada, located south of Reno. There is extensive geothermal activity in the area, including numerous hot springs, steam vents, and fumaroles. The residential portions of this area, located mostly east of Steamboat Creek and south of modern-day SR 341, are now known simply as Steamboat. The state of Nevada has a Steamboat Springs Historical Marker (#198) situated along the eastern shoulder of the busy Carson–Reno Highway (US 395 Alt.), approximately 1.65 miles (2.66 km) south of the Mount Rose Junction (the intersection with SR 341 and SR 431). There were once several mineral spas operating here along Steamboat Creek, with at least one still in business called Steamboat Hot Springs Healing Center & Spa.The water from the springs contains many minerals including: calcium carbonate, magnesium, sodium sulfate, carbon dioxide, lithia, soda and silica.

Galena High School is a public secondary school in Southwest Reno, Nevada that is a part of the Washoe County School District. The school mascot is the Grizzly Bear, and the school's colors are black and gold. Their sports teams are known as the "Galena Grizzlies". Galena has been accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools.

Mount Rose Station is a proposed hotel and casino located at the intersection of Herz Boulevard and Mount Rose Highway next to The Summit in Reno, Nevada. Galena, Washoe County, Nevada is an abandoned town in Washoe County, Nevada, south of Reno. The portion of Reno just south of Mount Rose Highway and west of Steamboat Springs is also known as Galena. Galena was developed as a mining property in 1860, with the discovery of silver in the eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The town greatly expanded after 1862, when it also became an important lumbering center. By 1863, there were eleven sawmills operating in Galena. The town's streets during the height of commercial activity, were crowded with "grog shops overflowed with charcoal burners, wood choppers, timbermen, millers, miners, bullwhackers and teamsters"The town was abandoned after 1867, following two disastrous fires. In 1990, the University of Nevada, Reno Mackay School of Mines operated a training site for students at the nearby Union Mine.The site is marked by Nevada Historical Marker number 212.

The Galena Creek Bridge is a twin-span concrete arch bridge in Washoe County, Nevada. The bridge carries Interstate 580 and U.S. Route 395 over the Galena Creek between Carson City and Reno. It was opened to traffic in late August 2012.The bridge has a total length of 1,725 feet (526 m) and main span length of 689 feet (210 m). The height is 295 feet (90 m). The bridge is reportedly the largest cathedral arch bridge in the world; that is a type of open-spandrel deck arch bridge where the arch supports the deck only at the center.Construction was started in 2003 but was delayed by a number of safety concerns and other issues. In 2006, the original prime contractor found the planned construction method unsafe; the method was revised and a new contractor hired. In 2010, several long superficial cracks were found. On July 28, 2012, the Nevada Department of Transportation held a community event for pedestrian, bicycle, and limited motor vehicle traffic to see the bridge prior to it opening for traffic; the bridge and freeway project opened in late August 2012.

The Peleg Brown Ranch, at 12945 Old Virginia Rd. in Reno, Nevada, dates from 1864. Also known as the Louis Damonte Ranch, it includes Bungalow/craftsman and Greek Revival architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994; the listing included five contributing buildings on about 4 acres (1.6 ha).The original Brown/Damonte Ranch included about 620 acres (250 ha) at the north end of Steamboat Valley, in the southern Truckee Meadows, roughly bounded by South Virginia Street (U.S. Highway 395) and Old Virginia Road on the sides. 1857 pioneer rancher Peleg Brown, a Rhode Island native arrived in the Truckee Meadows with his brother, Joshua. The two brothers introduced alfalfa to the Truckee Meadows and built their home and ranch 150 years ago which still stands today. The main house was built in 1864 and has Greek Revival architecture; it was renovated in 1940 and in 1955. A play house, built around 1900, is a Craftsman-style 8-by-10-foot (2.4 m × 3.0 m) bungalow.It was deemed significant "for its association with the development of agriculture and irrigation in the Truckee Meadows in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries", including its serving the Comstock Lode mining area. It served as a stagecoach stop, too.

The Damonte Ranch started in 1939 when Louis Damonte, an Italian immigrant farmed alfalfa and raised cattle. The original Damonte Ranch included about 620 acres (250 ha) known as the Peleg Brown Ranch, at 12945 Old Virginia Road in Reno, Nevada, back in 1864. Author Holly Walton-Buchanan, whose latest book, "Land of the Buckaroo: Historic Ranches of Western Nevada" includes a chapter in his book on the Brown-Damonte Ranch. Located in the Truckee Meadows and borders Interstate 580, U.S. Route 395 and the Eastern Range, the Damonte Ranch is both a working cattle ranch and a developed community.
