Syracuse Hancock International Airport

Hancock Field Air National Guard Base is a United States Air Force base, co-located with Syracuse Hancock International Airport. It is located 4.6 miles (7.4 km) north-northeast of Syracuse, New York, at 6001 East Molloy Road, Mattydale, NY 13211. The installation consists of approximately 350 acres (1.4 km2) of flight line, aircraft ramp and support facilities on the south side of the airport. Hancock Field is the home station of the New York Air National Guard's 174th Attack Wing (174 ATW), and the 274th Air Support Operations Squadron (274 ASOS). Both units are operationally gained by Air Combat Command (ACC). The base employs approximately 2,000 personnel consisting of full-time Active Guard and Reserve (AGR), Air Reserve Technicians (ART) and traditional part-time Air National Guardsmen. ANG personnel maintain the BAK-14 arresting gear on the airport's primary runway for emergency use by military tactical jet aircraft. They also operate an Air Force crash fire station that augments the airport's civilian Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) department. On 11 August 2008, it was reported that the 174th Fighter Wing would replace all F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft with MQ-9 Reaper unmanned combat aircraft. On 6 March 2010, the last 2 F-16Cs departed Hancock Field marking the end of F-16 aircraft operations at the base. Aircraft 85-1570 and 85-1561 made three low passes for the assembled crowd gathered to commemorate the end of manned aviation for the Wing. The unit then transitioned to the remotely piloted MQ-9 Reaper, and was re-designated as an Attack Wing with the new aircraft.

Cicero is a town in northern Onondaga County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 31,435. The name of the town was assigned by a clerk interested in the classics, honoring Cicero, a Roman statesman. The Town of Cicero is in the central part of New York and a suburb of Syracuse in the northeastern section of Onondaga County.

North Syracuse is a village in Onondaga County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 6,739. North Syracuse is located in the towns of Cicero and Clay, north of the city of Syracuse.

Lyncourt is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 4,250 at the 2010 census. Lyncourt is in the town of Salina.

The Alvord House is a historic stone farmhouse in the town of Salina, New York, just north of Syracuse. The Alvord family were merchants in the then-emerging salt manufacturing business in the Salina area in the early 19th century. In 1835, this house was constructed on what was then a large tract of farmland. It was the main house amongst a small cluster of other homes and outbuildings on the family farm. Presently, the stone house is all that remains of the Alvord estate. It is contained within a small public park in the hamlet of Lyncourt. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

Mattydale is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 6,446 at the 2010 census. Mattydale is a community in the northeast part of the town of Salina and is a northern suburb of Syracuse. Mattydale was named for the farm of Frank Matty.

Penn-Can Mall was a mall in the town of Cicero, New York, north of Syracuse. It opened on March 28, 1976. It was the first enclosed mall on the north end of Syracuse, and the fourth mall to be built in the entire metropolitan area. It was constructed by the Winmar Company of Seattle, Washington, and had room for 86 stores. At the mall's inception, only 28 stores were open, but the other spaces quickly followed, followed by even more during an expansion in 1986, putting the mall's store count to 121. The mall also had a smaller upper level with a few small shops and a Loews Cinema. There was also an old European clock in the center court of the mall. Today the mall, including its clock, is home to a multi-franchise "auto mall" known as Driver's Village.

The North Syracuse Central School District (NSCSD) is a public school district in Central New York in the United States. The district is located just outside Syracuse, New York. It serves the communities of North Syracuse, Clay, Cicero, Bridgeport, and Mattydale. The District covers 89 sq mi (230 km2) with approximately 5,600 residents. In July 2019, Daniel D. Bowles became the Superintendent of Schools. Daniel has worked for the district since 1997, first as a school counselor at Cicero-North Syracuse High School, then became associate principal at Gillette Road Middle School, principal at Roxboro Road Elementary School in 2001, then became director of elementary education in 2008 and most recently, as the associate superintendent in 2012. He replaced Annette Speach as Superintendent of Schools.The North Syracuse Central School District is the largest of the 23 component school districts in the Onondaga-Cortland-Madison (OCM) Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES). As a component of the OCM BOCES, NSCSD participates in its career and technical, alternative and special education programs.

The Scare-A-Con Film Festival (formerly the B-Movie Film Festival) is an annual film festival held in Syracuse, United States. The festival was founded in 1999 by local filmmaker Ron Bonk to promote the art of B-movie making. It was canceled in its third year due to the effects of the September 11 attacks. It then existed primarily online or as a much smaller event for several years (during which it was profiled by The Wall Street Journal) and only restarted as a live event at the Palace Theatre in 2005. Many of the films entered are made on minimal budgets. Screenings can feature full-length films, documentaries, and shorts. Various genres are included, and selected films are usually reviewed for possible distribution. The festival defines a B-movie as "a production whose entertainment and artistic value exceeds the limitations of its budget." The festival's "Killer B" or "Tor" awards are sought after and prominently displayed by the winners. One film maker described being nominated for a B-Movie Film Festival award "like heaven to the world of independent filmmaking". It averages a B in reviews.

The Palace Theatre is a 1920s-era movie palace in the village of Eastwood in Syracuse, New York. It has been owned and operated by the same family for more than 80 years.

Messina Springs was a small community, northwest of Messina (now East Syracuse), which was settled in the early 19th century around several mineral springs east of Syracuse, New York, United States, at the intersection of James Street and Thompson Road. James Street was then a main east–west road from Syracuse to Messina and Manlius Center. Thompson Road was a main north–south thoroughfare in eastern Onondaga County with the first bridge east of Syracuse to cross over the Erie Canal at Headson's Landing. Reputed to have healing powers, these springs attracted a large clientele, culminating in the late 19th century with a spa, hotel, casino and race track located there. The mania for such restorative waters had waned by early in the 20th century and Messina Springs declined. A fire consumed the hotel and casino around 1913. All that remains of this community is a tiny cemetery on James Street just west of Thomson Road. Lists of persons buried at this cemetery are available at Ancestry.com and FindaGrave.com
