The name "Laurel Hill" was adopted from Laurel Hill House, an 18th-century structure which had served as the residence of the Superintendent of the Reformatory, and originally was the home of Revolutionary War patriot William Lindsay.

Lorton station is a railroad terminal in Lorton, Virginia. It is the northern terminal for Amtrak's Auto Train, which operates between this station and Sanford station in Florida. When Auto-Train was originally established in Lorton in 1971, the station house was still under construction. Until it was completed sometime between 1972 and 1975, it consisted of tents and pre-fabricated houses and trailers, and the parking lot was still paved only with gravel. When it was completed, it included a former caboose and boxcar previously owned by the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad that was converted into a gift shop. As with the rest of Auto Train, the station closed in 1981 and was reopened in 1983 when Amtrak acquired the service. The current station, which opened in 2000 as a replacement for the original Lorton Auto-Train station, features a large, modern waiting area designed in a modern Art Deco style, with high glass walls, a small gift shop, a snack bar, and a children's playground. There is one long low-level platform (which is 1,480 feet (451 m) long) designed for Auto Train boarding and 6 vehicle ramps for boarding vehicles onto the 20+ autoracks that are on the Auto Train. This station is one mile south of the Virginia Railway Express Lorton station. No other Amtrak trains stop at either station.

The Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia is a vibrant, 55-acre center for the arts and arts education that, through adaptive reuse, utilizes existing structures on repurposed land in the former Lorton Reformatory. A strong community partner with a growing national reputation, the Workhouse hosts celebrations, offers space for special events, and showcases Fairfax County's commitment to the arts. The Workhouse is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and relies on the generosity of WAC partners and community. Once surrounded by barbed wire fence, the Workhouse Arts Center now shares the glory of artistic expression and is open to all. Artists rent studio space, actors perform on the stage, students of all ages take classes from dance to blacksmithing on a beautiful arcaded campus built on the same Jeffersonian plan of linked pavilions as found on the main grounds of the University of Virginia. The annual Fourth of July fireworks festival, Brewfest, and the Halloween “Haunt” are community favorites. The most recent addition is the Lucy Burns Museum, which tells the 91-year history of the District of Columbia's Correctional Facility and honors the suffragists who were imprisoned there in 1917 during the struggle to secure the vote for women.

The Lorton Reformatory, also known as the Lorton Correctional Complex, is a former prison complex in Lorton, Virginia, established in 1910 for the District of Columbia, United States. The complex began as a prison farm called the Occoquan Workhouse for nonviolent offenders serving short sentences. The District established an adjacent reformatory in 1914, and then a 10-acre (4.0 ha) walled penitentiary constructed by inmates from 1931 through 1938, as a division of the reformatory with heightened security. The complex came under the administration of the District of Columbia Department of Corrections when it was formed in 1946. After further expansions, a peak size of 3,500-acre (1,400 ha), and 92 years of service, the facility was ordered closed in the late 1990s. The final prisoners were transferred out in November 2001.Lorton was also the site of a bunker used by the government from 1959 to 2001 that housed emergency communications equipment to be used in the event of a war with the Soviet Union. Lorton Reformatory also hosted Nike missile site W-64.

Sydenstricker School, also known as Pohick School #8 and Upper Pohick Community League Hall (since 1948), is a historic one-room school located at Springfield, Fairfax County, Virginia. It was built in 1928, and is a one-story, front-gabled structure, covered in weatherboard, painted red with white trim, and topped with a metal roof. Also on the property are a contributing combination storage shed and three-hole privy, the original privy pit, and a large metal flag pole, donated in 1928.The school building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. In 2017 it was commemorated with a historic marker erected on the premises by the Fairfax County Historical Commission.

Lorton station is a railroad station in Lorton, Virginia, served by the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) Fredericksburg Line. The station is one mile north of Amtrak's Lorton station, the northern terminus of the Auto Train.
