Lorton station (Auto Train)

Lorton station is a railroad station in Lorton, Virginia, served by the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) Fredericksburg Line. The station is one mile north of Amtrak's Lorton station, the northern terminus of the Auto Train.

Pohick is an unincorporated community in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. Pohick is centered between the intersections of Rolling and Telegraph Roads with Richmond Highway (U.S. Highway 1). It is adjacent to the communities of Lorton and Newington. Pohick takes its name from Pohick Church which in turn is named for Pohick Creek.

Pohick Church, previously known as Pohick Episcopal Church, is an Episcopal church in the community of Lorton in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. Often called the "Mother Church of Northern Virginia," the church is notable for its association with important figures in early Virginian history such as George Washington and George Mason, both of whom served on its vestry.The present structure was completed in 1774 and underwent significant renovations beginning in 1874 and 1890. It is two stories tall with a hipped roof and modillioned cornice, with an interior of early Colonial Revival design. The church building was added to the Virginia Landmarks Register in 1968 and National Register of Historic Places in 1969.The church's archive includes the original vestry book of Truro Parish, dating to 1732; a 1761 prayer book imported by Washington; and the grave marker of Katherine Popkins, dated 1766, which is the lone surviving stone from the graveyard of the congregation's former location in Colchester. Charles Mason Remey had contracted a family mausoleum on the grounds in 1937, but "the Remeum" became the target of vandalism and was demolished beginning in 1973.

Silverbrook Methodist Church, also known as Silverbrook United Methodist Church, is a historic Methodist church located at Lorton, Fairfax County, Virginia. It was built between 1906 and 1908, and is a rectangular, one-story, one-room, gable-front, frame structure with a projecting front vestibule topped by a bell tower. It is in the Late Gothic Revival style and measures approximately 24 feet by 40 feet. Also on the property is a contributing church cemetery dated to 1911.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Laurel Hill is a census-designated place in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2010 census was 6,855. Formerly part of the Lorton CDP, it comprises most of what was formerly the Lorton Reformatory grounds, which were purchased by Fairfax County in 2002 following the prison's closing and redeveloped as a new suburban community. The name "Laurel Hill" was adopted from Laurel Hill House, an 18th-century structure which had served as the residence of the Superintendent of the Reformatory, and originally was the home of Revolutionary War patriot William Lindsay.

The 2010 census showed a significant decrease after half the population was split off to the newly created Newington Forest CDP. While the ZIP code for Newington is 22122, this is only for delivery points within the post office itself. Homes and businesses in the CDP have Springfield or Lorton street addresses.

The Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia is a vibrant, 55-acre center for the arts and arts education that, through adaptive reuse, utilizes existing structures on repurposed land in the former Lorton Reformatory. The most recent addition is the Lucy Burns Museum, which tells the 91-year history of the District of Columbia's Correctional Facility and honors the suffragists who were imprisoned there in 1917 during the struggle to secure the vote for women.

The Lorton Reformatory, also known as the Lorton Correctional Complex, is a former prison complex in Lorton, Virginia, established in 1910 for the District of Columbia, United States. The complex began as a prison farm called the Occoquan Workhouse for nonviolent offenders serving short sentences. The District established an adjacent reformatory in 1914, and then a 10-acre (4.0 ha) walled penitentiary constructed by inmates from 1931 through 1938, as a division of the reformatory with heightened security. The complex came under the administration of the District of Columbia Department of Corrections when it was formed in 1946. After further expansions, a peak size of 3,500-acre (1,400 ha), and 92 years of service, the facility was ordered closed in the late 1990s. The final prisoners were transferred out in November 2001.Lorton was also the site of a bunker used by the government from 1959 to 2001 that housed emergency communications equipment to be used in the event of a war with the Soviet Union. Lorton Reformatory also hosted Nike missile site W-64.

Newington Forest is a census-designated place in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2010 census was 12,442. It is part of the Washington metropolitan area. It includes the Newington Forest subdivision and several nearby neighborhoods of southern Springfield and northern Lorton.

Durga Temple of Virginia is a Hindu Temple located in Lorton, Virginia and serves the Hindu population in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area. In 2010, the temple served 6500 Hindus residing in Fairfax County.
