La Garita Caldera is a large caldera in the San Juan volcanic field in the San Juan Mountains near the town of Creede in southwestern Colorado, United States. It is west of La Garita, Colorado. The eruption that created the La Garita Caldera is among the largest known volcanic eruptions in Earth's history, as well as being one of the most powerful known supervolcanic events.

The Fish Canyon Tuff is the large volcanic ash flow or ignimbrite deposit resulting from one of the largest known explosive eruptions on Earth, estimated at 1,200 cu mi (5,000 km3). (see List of largest volcanic eruptions). The Fish Canyon Tuff eruption was centred at the La Garita Caldera in southwest Colorado; the caldera itself would have formed by collapse, as a result of the eruption. Studies of the tuff show that it all belongs to one eruption due to its uniform bulk-chemical composition (SiO2=bulk 67.5–68.5% (dacite), matrix 75–76% (rhyolite) and consistent phenocryst content (35–50%) and mineralogical composition (plagioclase, sanidine, quartz, biotite, hornblende, sphene, apatite, zircon, Fe-Ti oxides are the primary phenocrysts). This tuff and eruption is part of the larger San Juan volcanic field and the Oligocene Southern Rocky Mountain ignimbrite flare-up.The Fish Canyon Tuff eruption occurred around 28 Million years ago. Sanidine crystals from the Fish Canyon Tuff (FCTs) are used as a reference mineral in 40Ar-39Ar dating, and the current 'astronomically calibrated' age for the FCTs is 28.175 Ma.

Creede is a Statutory Town and the county seat of Mineral County, Colorado, United States. It is the most populous community and the only incorporated municipality within the county. The town population was 257 at the 2020 United States census.

The Wagon Wheel Gap Hot Springs Resort, near Creede, Colorado, is the historic name of what is now a dude ranch, the 4UR Ranch. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019. Of 26 buildings on the property, 14 were deemed to be contributing to the historic character of the listed area, and there were 4 contributing structures and a contributing object.It was originally developed in the 1870s, with soaking pools and relatively simple lodging. The Wagon Wheel Gap Improvement Company bought the property in the 1890s and made improvements during 1902-05 which established a "rustic character".Artifacts include a dinner bell cast in about 1949.It is located about 8 miles (13 km) southeast of Creede, and about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south of Wagon Wheel Gap, on the eastern edge of the Creede Caldera. It may be accessed by a dirt road, Goose Creek Road, which runs 1 mile (1.6 km) south from Colorado State Route 149 to the ranch, which is on the west side of Goose Creek, a tributary to the upper Rio Grande. Further south on the road is the Wagon Wheel Gap Fluospar Mine and Mill, on the east side of Goose Creek, which was also listed on the National Register in 2019.

Rio Grande National Forest is a 1.86 million-acre (7,530 km2) U.S. National Forest located in southwestern Colorado. The forest encompasses the San Luis Valley, which is the world's largest agricultural alpine valley, as well as one of the world's largest high deserts located around mountains. The Rio Grande rises in the forest, and the Continental Divide runs along most of its western border. The forest lies in parts of nine counties. In descending order of land area within the forest they are Saguache, Mineral, Conejos, Rio Grande, Hinsdale, San Juan, Alamosa, Archuleta, and Custer counties. Forest headquarters are currently located in Monte Vista, Colorado, but plan to move to Del Norte. There are local ranger district offices in Del Norte, La Jara, and Saguache.

The Wagon Wheel Gap Railroad Station, in Creede, Colorado, was built in 1883. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It was a station on a narrow-gauge railroad line that opened in July, 1883.

Slumgullion Pass (elevation 11,530 ft (3,514 m)) is a mountain pass in southwestern Colorado traversed by State Highway 149 east of Lake City. The north side has the steepest grade of any continuously paved road in Colorado (9%), but the pass does not close often in winter because snowplows clear the route regularly during this season. It has a few switchbacks and tight spots, but other than that, most travelers will find it an easy, scenic route. Technically speaking, the current highway does not traverse the true Slumgullion Pass, which lies just off the highway on the ridge between Cebolla Creek and the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River, at an elevation of about 11,300 ft (3,400 m). As a result of a realignment several decades ago (evident by comparing USGS topographic maps of different vintages), the road now takes a shorter but somewhat higher route as it travels east and south from this spot toward Spring Creek Pass. The road sign at the high point refers to Slumgullion Summit rather than Slumgullion Pass in order to reflect this. This is analogous to the usage of the terms Donner Summit and Cajon Summit in California. However, in all three cases, the more familiar but slightly inaccurate name is routinely used.
