The Lieber Correctional Institution is a maximum-security state prison for men located in Ridgeville, Dorchester County, South Carolina, owned and operated by the South Carolina Department of Corrections.The facility was opened in 1986 and has a capacity of 1488 inmates held at maximum security. Lieber has housed South Carolina's death row from April 12, 1997, when they were moved from Broad River Correctional Institution, until September 2017, when it was moved to Kirkland Correctional Institution.

Summerville Historic District is a national historic district located at Summerville, Dorchester County, South Carolina. The district encompasses 700 contributing buildings in the village of Summerville. About 70 percent of the buildings predate World War I. The buildings include raised cottages, Greek Revival influenced, and Victorian / Queen Anne and other turn of the 20th century structures are found throughout. In addition to residential structures, the district includes churches and commercial buildings—most dating from around 1900. Notable buildings include Tupper's Drug Store, O. J. Sire's Commercial Building, White Gables, Pettigru-Lebby House Gazebo, Summerville Presbyterian Church, Wesley United Methodist Church, and the Squirrel Inn.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

Cypress Methodist Camp Ground is a historic Methodist camp meeting in Ridgeville, Dorchester County, South Carolina. Cypress Camp Ground was functional as early as 1794, and an adjacent cemetery contains graves from the early 1800s. The campground is in the general shape of a rectangle of 34 tents, or cabins, made of rough-hewn lumber. These cabins, rectangular shaped, are generally 1 1/2-stories and contain earthen floors.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Old White Meeting House Ruins and Cemetery is a historic site near Summerville, Dorchester County, South Carolina. The meeting house was built about 1700, burned during the American Revolution in 1781, rebuilt in 1794, then reduced to ruins by the Charleston earthquake of 1886. The extant ruins include portions of each corner – the largest approximately 9’ high – and significant remnants of the foundation of walls. Also on the property is a contributing cemetery.The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site sits along the Ashley River, near the town of Summerville in Dorchester County, South Carolina. The park boasts one of the most well-preserved oyster-shell tabby forts in the country, St. George's Bell Tower, log shipping wharves, burial sites and cemeteries, as well as on-going archaeological digs that are still unearthing the settlement's history.

Dorchester was a town in the Province of South Carolina. Situated on the Ashley River about 18 miles (29 km) from Charleston, it was founded in February 1696 by followers of Reverend Joseph Lord from Dorchester, Massachusetts. They named it after their home town, which had been named by earlier immigrants after the English town Dorchester). Dorchester was abandoned in 1751.
