Slaugham

St Mary's Church is an Anglican church in the village of Slaugham in Mid Sussex, one of seven local government districts in the English county of West Sussex. The 12th- and 13th-century church, restored in the Victorian era, serves a large rural area of the Sussex Weald, covering three villages (each with current or former chapels of ease of their own) as well as the ancient settlement of Slaugham. It also controlled the church in the market town of Crawley—now one of the area's largest towns—for the first few centuries of its existence. A locally important family built a private chapel in the church in the 17th century, and a series of memorials to deceased family members are considered to be excellent examples of their type. English Heritage has listed the building at Grade II* for its architectural and historical importance.

Nymans is an English garden to the east of the village of Handcross, and in the civil parish of Slaugham in West Sussex, England. The garden was developed, starting in the late 19th century, by three generations of the Messel family, and was brought to renown by Leonard Messel. In 1953 Nymans became a National Trust property. Nymans is the origin of many sports, selections and hybrids, both planned and serendipitous, some of which can be identified by the term nymansensis, "of Nymans". Eucryphia × nymansensis (E. cordifolia × E. glutinosa) is also known as E. "Nymansay". Magnolia × loebneri 'Leonard Messel', Camellia 'Maud Messel' and Forsythia suspensa 'Nymans', with its bronze young stems, are all familiar shrubs to gardeners. The gardens are listed Grade II* in Historic England's Register of Parks and Gardens, and the house is a Grade II listed building. During 2019, the gardens received 382,948 visitors.

On 12 July 1906, a bus crashed into a tree on Handcross Hill in Sussex, England, killing 10 people and injuring a further 26 in the worst road crash in Sussex history.

Handcross is a village in the Mid Sussex District of West Sussex, England. It lies on the A23 road 4.2 miles (6.8 kilometres) south of Crawley. At the 2011 Census the population fell within the civil parish of Slaugham. Nymans Garden, 30 acres (12 hectares) of parklands run by the National Trust, is located adjacent to the High Street, as are 20 acres (8 ha) of woodland and water gardens at High Beeches Garden.Handcross has one public house, The Red Lion (High Street), which was refurbished in 2010 in contemporary style. It formerly had three, the other two being The Fountain (demolished in 2012 and replaced by housing) and The Royal Oak (closed in 2020). This is now due to re-open in 2023, Handcross also has a Social club. Handcross Primary School, situated at the northern end of the village recently underwent extensive building works to increase capacity. Opposite the primary school is Handcross Park School, an independent prep school.

Warninglid (historically known as Warninglyth and Warningeld) is a small village in the Mid Sussex District of West Sussex, England. It lies on the B2115 road 5.5 miles (8.9 km) west of Haywards Heath. The name Warninglid is believed to originate from two words, Werna and Gelad (meaning "Werna's Path".) It is in the civil parish of Slaugham. At the centre of the village is a crossroads, and there sits the Half Moon public house. A nearby village - Handcross - provides the post office and convenience store for the locals. Over the last quarter century the village has won the Best-Kept Village competition three times.There is one school serving Warninglid, namely Warninglid Primary School. The school teaches 60 students and is led by Headteacher Marion West.

Cow Wood and Harry's Wood is a 75.5-hectare (187-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Handcross in West Sussex. it is in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.This area of ancient semi-natural woodland is crossed by ghylls, streams in steep valleys which have a warm and moist microclimate. Forty-seven species of breeding birds have been recorded, including wood warbler, willow tit, hawfinch and lesser spotted woodpecker.

Handcross Park School is an independent co-educational preparatory school in Handcross, between Crawley, Horsham and Haywards Heath in West Sussex, England. The school provides private co-education from the Nursery aged 2, through Pre-Prep and into Prep until aged 13, with a mix of day pupils flexi, weekly and full boarders. The school traces its origins back to 1887, and moved to its current site in 1968. The School was formed as a result of the merger of two prep schools, Newells and Desmoor. Newells had to move to this site following a fire in which one pupil died. The staff and pupils of Desmoor then moved from Ewhurst in Surrey. Originally there were two headmasters, Captain Peter Hope-Lang and Mr Alan McNeile, until Hope-Lang's death in 1970. For a time the school was also known as Newells and Desmoor School. As of 2019, the School has 414 pupils. The Headmaster, Richard Brown, joined the school in September 2016, taking over from Graeme Owton, who became Head in 2011. Graeme Owton has become Executive Head of the Brighton College Prep Schools. In June 2011 a merger with Brighton College was announced.

Staplefield is a village in the Mid Sussex District of West Sussex, England, situated 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) north-west of Haywards Heath on the B2114 road. It is part of Ansty and Staplefield civil parish where the 2011 Census population information is included. The Anglican parish church built in 1847 is dedicated to St. Mark and contains wall paintings by the Victorian stained glass designer Charles Eamer Kempe. In 1994, Reverend Anthony Freeman, vicar of St Mark's was dismissed by the Bishop of Chichester, Eric Kemp, when he stated that he didn't believe in God and published his book God in Us: A Case for Christian Humanism. He is currently managing editor of The Journal of Consciousness Studies.The village also has a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima. There are two public houses, The Jolly Tanners and The Victory Inn, the latter is named after the legal victory in gaining permission to be a pub not after Horatio Nelson's flagship, Victory, despite his sister, Catherine Matcham, living in nearby Slaugham. The pub sign shows a picture of a judge and a document inside the pub shows details of the case. There is also a red park next to the pubs. The pubs are adjacent to the village green and cricket pitch.

Wykehurst Place (or Park) is a Gothic Revival mansion in Bolney, West Sussex, England, resembling more the châteaux of the Loire than an English manor house. It was designed in 1871 by architect Edward Middleton Barry for the banker of German extraction, Henry Huth, MP (1815–1878), a bibliophile and collector of paintings. At the time of construction (1871–74) it cost £35,000. Its turrets, arches, conical roofs, and many architectural devices give it the appearance of a fairytale mansion. The East lodge fronts the main London-Brighton road. The large black entrance gates are fashioned in wrought iron. Massive griffins with spread wings perch on either side of the gates. The entrance to the property leads down a pebble drive to a grassed patio surrounding the house, descending from a 280-foot terrace to a garden and lawn at the back. The mansion's exterior— "decaying at the time of writing" Nicholas Pevsner observed in 1965— and grounds have appeared in a number of films dating back to the late 1960s, including Oh! What a Lovely War, All the Colors of the Dark, Demons of the Mind, The Legend of Hell House, The Eagle Has Landed, and Holocaust 2000, among others.The Iranian writer and filmmaker Ebrahim Golestan has owned and lived in Wykehurst Place since 1984.

Colwood is a village near Warninglid in West Sussex, England. It is the site of Colwood Manor.

Cedars was an immigration detention facility in Crawley, West Sussex, United Kingdom adjacent to Gatwick Airport. It was operated by UK Visas and Immigration with security and facilities maintenance contracted out to G4S and Barnardo's providing social workers and child welfare services. Opened in 2011, Cedars was the first immigration detention center in the UK specifically designated for families with children. Unlike other facilities for single adults, which are essentially medium security prisons holding immigration violators pending deportation, Cedars consisted of apartments in a more open atmosphere. As a result, the UK Border Agency has referred to the facility as pre-departure accommodation rather than immigration detention. The closing of the costly, under-used facility was announced in August 2016. It was closed permanently in December 2016.

Tyes Place is a listed historic manor house in Staplefield, West Sussex, England. It was once a farm, then in the first half of the 20th century it was owned by local benefactors Margaret and Stanley Powell, who in 1918 used the building as a rest house for clergy. It is now a private residence.
