The district encompasses 668 contributing buildings and 1 contributing site in what started as a planned community of Norfolk County, Virginia and grew to become an independent city. South Norfolk was never part of Norfolk, Virginia. In fact, the two cities are separated by the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River. South Norfolk is a primarily residential district that was developed between 1890 and 1930. The dwellings include representative examples of the Colonial Revival, Stick Style, and Queen Anne styles. The district also includes several churches, a school, a park, and a small local business district.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

South Norfolk was an independent city in the South Hampton Roads region of eastern Virginia and is now a section of the city of Chesapeake, one of the cities of Hampton Roads which surround the harbor of Hampton Roads and are linked by the Hampton Roads Beltway.

Norfolk Assembly was a Ford manufacturing plant that opened on April 20, 1925 on the Elizabeth River, near downtown Norfolk, Virginia, eventually closing in 2007 after manufacturing more than 7.9 million cars and trucks over almost a century of production.Modeled after the River Rouge Plant, the facility eventually included a power house, water treatment plant, barber shop, safety-shoe store, restaurant, fitness center and TV studio. At the time of its closure, Ford employed more than 2,600 people at the 2,800,000-square-foot (260,000 m2) facility. Ford invested $375 million at the plant in 2002 to upgrade it for production of the redesigned eleventh generation 2004 F-150.Archival papers of the noted industrial architect Albert Kahn (housed at the Bentley Historical Library, University of Michigan) indicate that in 1934 Kahn's office prepared drawings for architectural work at Norfolk Assembly.Norfolk Assembly produced models including the Model T, Model A and school bus chassis. The last model manufactured at the plant was the F150.

Oaklette Historic District is a national historic district located at Chesapeake, Virginia. The district encompasses 30 contributing buildings and 1 contributing object in an early-20th century planned streetcar suburb of Norfolk, Virginia. It is a primarily residential district that developed starting about World War I. The dwellings include representative examples of the Colonial Revival and Bungalow styles. Notable buildings include the Savage House (1915-1919), Pascal Paxson House (1901), George Wesley Jones House (1925), Samuel Paxson House (1906), Colonna Estate Caretaker's House (1925), and the Baker House (1910).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

The Eastern Branch Elizabeth River is a 9.0-mile-long (14.5 km) tidal river in the Hampton Roads area of the U.S. state of Virginia. The river flows from east to west, starting in Virginia Beach. At its crossing by Interstate 64 it becomes the boundary between Virginia Beach and the city of Norfolk, and farther west it is the boundary between Norfolk and the city of Chesapeake. For its final 3 miles (5 km) it is entirely within the city of Norfolk.

Old Portlock School No. 5 is a historic school building located at Chesapeake, Virginia. It was built in 1908, and is a one-story, rectangular, Colonial Revival style brick building. It features a hipped roof and a classical temple fronted porch with frieze, pediment, cornice, columns and pilasters. It continued to serve as an educational facility until the mid-1960s.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

The Chesterfield Heights Historic District is a national historic district located at Norfolk, Virginia. It encompasses 402 contributing buildings, 1 contributing site, and 1 contributing structure in a cohesive residential neighborhood located just to the northeast of downtown Norfolk. It was platted in 1904, and largely developed between 1915 and 1950. There are notable examples of Queen Anne and Italianate style residential architecture. Notable non-residential buildings include the St. Luke's Holiness Church of Christ's Disciples (c. 1950), Monticello Baptist Church (1925), and the Garrett Community Church (1940).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

The Jordan Bridge, officially named the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge, is a tolled highway fixed bridge which carries State Route 337 over the Southern Branch Elizabeth River between the City of Portsmouth into the City of Chesapeake in South Hampton Roads, Virginia. The new crossing is an all-electronic toll facility that eliminated bridge lifts and height and weight restrictions and restored a vital river crossing for the Hampton Roads region. Originally opened in 1928, it was privately built by an organization led by South Norfolk businessmen Wallace and Carl Jordan. It was later renamed the Jordan Bridge, principally to honor long-standing manager Carl M. Jordan. The oldest drawbridge in Virginia, the 80-year-old bridge had reached the end of its useful life by 2008. Faced with diminishing returns on millions of dollars in needed maintenance and unknown reliability, it was permanently closed on November 8, 2008. A replacement bridge, built with 100% private funds, and paid for by tolls, was approved by Chesapeake City Council on January 27, 2009. The new South Norfolk Jordan Bridge was originally scheduled to be completed by July 2010, but was finally completed and opened for use on October 27, 2012. It is owned and operated by United Bridge Partners, a business consortium consisting of Figg Bridge Builders and a private infrastructure investment firm.

The Southern Branch Elizabeth River is a 14.5-mile-long (23.3 km), primarily tidal river in the U.S. state of Virginia. It flows from south to north through the city of Chesapeake and forms the boundary between the cities of Portsmouth and Chesapeake for its northernmost 3 miles (5 km). It is a tributary of the Elizabeth River, connecting to the harbor of Hampton Roads to the north. It is part of the Intracoastal Waterway of the Atlantic coast of the United States, connecting by it to the North Landing River, which flows into North Carolina.

On November 22, 2022, Andre Marcus Bing killed six co-workers and injured four others before killing himself, in retaliation for perceived workplace harassment at the Walmart Supercenter where he worked as a night-supervisor in Chesapeake, Virginia, United States. Bing's suicide note cited concern he was being "led by Satan" and asking forgiveness - while also mentioning cancer treatments and loneliness.
