1984 Romeoville petroleum refinery disaster

Lemont Refinery is an oil refinery in Romeoville, Illinois owned and operated by Citgo Petroleum Corporation. Originally constructed in the early 1920s, it was reconstructed between 1968 and 1970 by its then owner Union Oil and has a current crude processing capacity of 177,000 barrels per day. The refinery was the site of the 1984 Romeoville petroleum refinery disaster in which 17 people were killed. The facility includes the following major units: one atmospheric distillation unit, one vacuum distillation unit, one fluid catalytic cracking unit, two catalytic reforming units, one alkylation unit, hydrodesulfurization units, and two coker units.

Romeoville is a station on Metra's Heritage Corridor at the intersection of 135th Street and New Avenue in Romeoville, Illinois. As of 2018, Romeoville is the 170th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 148 weekday boardings. As of April 2022, Romeoville is currently the newest station in the Metra system. As of 2022, Romeoville is served by three inbound trains in the morning and three outbound trains in the evening on weekdays only. Romeoville village trustees approved an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation for the construction of a new Metra station on the corner of 135th Street and New Avenue on January 7, 2015. The agreement specified that the village of Romeoville would dedicate $550,000 from its Motor Fuel Tax Fund to the project. The state of Illinois would then reimburse the village through a $440,000 Congestion, Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement grant, which would cover 80 percent of the cost. On October 19, 2016, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced that the Romeoville Metra station was selected to receive a $296,700 grant as a part of the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program. The funds were to help pay for sidewalks, platforms, and a warming shelter in addition to the construction of a nearby access road, and the completion of a multi-use path south of 135th Street with lighting. Construction began in May 2017. The station opened on February 5, 2018.Previously the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway operated a station which served Romeoville.

Romeoville station, known as Romeo on timetables, was an Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway station in the Chicago suburb of Romeoville, Illinois. The station was located near the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Freight trains still pass by the site of the old station, on the double track Southern Transcon Line. Metra had plans for a new Romeoville station on the Heritage Corridor since the early 21st Century. The station and accompanying parking would be located on the property belonging to the Citgo oil refinery between Lemont and Lockport. In May 2017, Metra went ahead with the plans when they broke ground for the new station in Romeoville. The new Romeoville station opened on February 3, 2018.

Isle a la Cache, a 101-acre riparian island, is located in the Des Plaines River in Romeoville, Illinois. The island is a forest preserve, owned and operated by the Forest Preserve District of Will County. The county has built the Isle a la Cache Museum on the island in celebration of the island's heritage in the North American fur trade.

The High Road Bridge is a road bridge over Long Run Creek in Lockport Township, Illinois. It is the world's first road bridge built using the hybrid composite beams (also known as Hillman-Composite Beam) (HCB's) invented by John R. Hillman and developed by the HC Bridge Company LLC. The HCB's are stronger, lighter and more corrosion resistant than the traditional concrete or steel beams. The HCB beam with a life span of 80 to 100 years and with minimal or no maintenance to the bridge girders is a cost competitive alternative to steel and concrete beam. It was designed by Teng & Associates and constructed by Herlihy Mid-Continent Company in 2008. The 17.4 m (57 ft) long, single-span bridge consists of six HCBs supporting a conventional 20 cm (8 in) thick reinforced concrete deck.

Romeoville High School, or RHS, is a public four-year high school located in Romeoville, Illinois, a southwest suburb of Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. The high school opened in 1963 as Lockport West. Lockport West school colors were navy blue and white. Orange was added when the school changed to Romeoville High School. Romeoville High School is located in northern Will County, Illinois, about 30 miles southwest of downtown Chicago and about seven miles north of Joliet, Illinois, along Illinois Routes 7, 53, and 171. The Des Plaines River runs through the community, as part of the Illinois-Michigan Canal.

The Des Plaines River Valley Bridge is a post-tensioned concrete girder toll bridge in the northeastern portion of the U.S. state of Illinois. It carries Interstate 355 (I-355) over the Des Plaines River, the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, the Illinois and Michigan Canal, several railroad lines, Bluff Road, New Avenue and a forest preserve. It is officially named the Veterans Memorial Bridge. There are title plaques on the square pillars at the north and south entrances to the bridge. The bridge is 1.3 miles (2.1 km) long.The bridge consists of 34 piers from 10 to 75 feet (3 to 23 m) in height. A lower level bridge was also built for maintenance purposes, and to carry a bicycle trail that will connect other bicycle trails in the area. The total height of the bridge ranges from 80 to 100 feet (24 to 30 m). The height of the bridge allows the endangered Hine's Emerald Dragonfly to fly safely beneath the bridge, away from the flow of traffic.

Old Chicago was a combination shopping mall and indoor amusement park that existed in the southwest Chicago suburb of Bolingbrook, Illinois from 1975 until 1980. It was billed as "The world's first indoor amusement park", and it was intended to draw visitors all year round, rain or shine. It opened to great fanfare and over 15,000 visitors on June 17, 1975, with an enormous building that housed major rides, such as three roller coasters and a Ferris wheel, as well as a turn-of-the-century-themed shopping mall with design reminiscent of the architecture of Louis Sullivan, such as his work for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. However, only six months after opening, the complex ran into financial troubles due to construction cost overruns. The opening of a competing amusement park in Chicago's north suburbs (known today as Six Flags Great America) hurt attendance, and the lack of large anchor stores failed to draw enough local and repeat shoppers. Despite management changes, the center continued to lose money. By 1978, the mall began closing on Mondays and Tuesdays, and in early 1980 the entire amusement park shut down and the rides were sold, only five years after opening. Efforts to find alternative uses for the huge building failed, and the structure was demolished in the spring of 1986. Its address was 555 S. Bolingbrook Drive, Bolingbrook, Illinois 60439.

Lockport Heights is a census-designated place (CDP) in Will County, Illinois, United States. It is in the northern part of the county and is bordered to the west, south, and east by the city of Lockport. Illinois Route 171 (Archer Avenue) runs along the northwest side of the CDP, leading southwest 3 miles (5 km) to the center of Lockport and northeast 17 miles (27 km) to the western edge of Chicago. Lockport Heights was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census.

UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Bolingbrook is a non-profit hospital campus in Bolingbrook, Illinois, United States that is part of a joint venture between AdventHealth and UChicago Medicine. The hospital is a primary stroke center and also a designated Level II trauma center by the Illinois Department of Public Health. When it opened in 2008, the hospital became the newest built in the state in twenty-five years.
