Lemont station is a station on Metra's Heritage Corridor in Lemont, Illinois. The station is 25.3 miles (40.7 km) away from Union Station, the northern terminus of the line. In Metra's zone-based fare system, Lemont is in zone E. As of 2018, Lemont is the 105th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 455 weekday boardings.As of 2022, Lemont is served by three inbound trains in the morning and three outbound trains in the evening on weekdays only. Lemont station was originally built by the Chicago and Alton Railroad in 1859 and designed in a manner similar to that of Lockport station. The tracks run parallel to the Illinois and Michigan Canal, and shares the right-of-way with Amtrak's Lincoln Service and Texas Eagle trains, however, no Amtrak trains stop here.

The Lemont Downtown Historic District is a commercial historic district encompassing 14 city blocks in downtown Lemont, Illinois. The district has served as the village's downtown since the 1850s, when the newly opened Illinois & Michigan Canal and subsequent limestone quarrying in the area sparked a local economic boom. It expanded through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as new railroads and the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal brought residents and business opportunities to the village. The commercial buildings in the district exhibit a variety of common building types seen between 1850 and 1950; one-part, two-part, gable-front, and false-front buildings are all present, and their designs feature Italianate, Commercial, and revival style architecture. The district also includes several of Lemont's government buildings, including its village hall and post office.The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 6, 2016.

Lemont is a village located in Cook, DuPage, and Will counties in the U.S. state of Illinois, and is a south-west suburb of Chicago. The population was 17,629 as of the 2020 census. The village is situated on a hillside along the south banks of the Des Plaines River. It overlooks Waterfall Glen's Midwestern Bluff Savanna on the opposite side. Lemont is home to Argonne National Laboratory and other heavy industrial sites, and has a substantial European immigrant population.

The Lemont Central Grade School is a former school building at 410 McCarthy Road in Lemont, Illinois. The school was built in 1869 to replace Lemont's first school, which opened in 1836 when the area was still largely rural. Locally quarried limestone was used to construct the school; at the time, limestone production was one of the city's main industries. Architect John Barnes of Joliet designed the Victorian building. As the city's population grew considerably during the construction of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal in the 1890s, an annex was placed on the school in 1896 to accommodate additional students. The school operated until building safety issues forced its closure in 1974; at the time, it was the oldest continuously operating school in the state. The building has since been converted to condominiums.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 7, 1975.

It is a prime example of the so-called 'Polish Cathedral style' of churches in both its opulence and grand scale. Along with the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago, it is one of the two monumental religious edifices that dominate the Lemont skyline.

On July 23, 1984, an explosion and fire took place at a Union Oil Lemont Refinery in Romeoville, Illinois, outside Chicago, killing 17 people and causing major property damage. The explosive force propelled the upper portion 14 metres (46 ft) of the vessel a distance of 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) from its original location, while the base remained at the center of the resultant fire.

As of 2018, Romeoville is the 170th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 148 weekday boardings. As of April 2022, Romeoville is currently the newest station in the Metra system. As of 2022, Romeoville is served by three inbound trains in the morning and three outbound trains in the evening on weekdays only. Romeoville village trustees approved an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation for the construction of a new Metra station on the corner of 135th Street and New Avenue on January 7, 2015. The agreement specified that the village of Romeoville would dedicate $550,000 from its Motor Fuel Tax Fund to the project. The state of Illinois would then reimburse the village through a $440,000 Congestion, Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement grant, which would cover 80 percent of the cost. On October 19, 2016, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced that the Romeoville Metra station was selected to receive a $296,700 grant as a part of the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program. The funds were to help pay for sidewalks, platforms, and a warming shelter in addition to the construction of a nearby access road, and the completion of a multi-use path south of 135th Street with lighting. Construction began in May 2017. The station opened on February 5, 2018.Previously the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway operated a station which served Romeoville.

Old Chicago was a combination shopping mall and indoor amusement park that existed in the southwest Chicago suburb of Bolingbrook, Illinois from 1975 until 1980. It was billed as "The world's first indoor amusement park", and it was intended to draw visitors all year round, rain or shine. It opened to great fanfare and over 15,000 visitors on June 17, 1975, with an enormous building that housed major rides, such as three roller coasters and a Ferris wheel, as well as a turn-of-the-century-themed shopping mall with design reminiscent of the architecture of Louis Sullivan, such as his work for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. However, only six months after opening, the complex ran into financial troubles due to construction cost overruns. The opening of a competing amusement park in Chicago's north suburbs (known today as Six Flags Great America) hurt attendance, and the lack of large anchor stores failed to draw enough local and repeat shoppers. Despite management changes, the center continued to lose money. By 1978, the mall began closing on Mondays and Tuesdays, and in early 1980 the entire amusement park shut down and the rides were sold, only five years after opening. Efforts to find alternative uses for the huge building failed, and the structure was demolished in the spring of 1986. Its address was 555 S. Bolingbrook Drive, Bolingbrook, Illinois 60439.
