Robert L. Doughton House is a historic home located at Laurel Springs, Alleghany County, North Carolina It was built in 1899, and is a two-story frame farmhouse in a vernacular Queen Anne style influenced frame cottage. It features a steeply pitched hip roof, with a two-story, one-bay gable roof projection. It was the home of Robert L. Doughton (1863-1954), one of North Carolina's foremost politicians of the first of the 20th century. In the 1990s Rufus A. Doughton's house was restored, and it is now a popular bed-and-breakfast for tourists to the region. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Cranberry Township is one of seven townships in Alleghany County, North Carolina, United States. The township had a population of 375, according to the 2010 census. Before 1880, it was included in Prathers Creek Township.Cranberry Township occupies 23.9 square miles (62.0 km2) in southwestern Alleghany County. The township's western border is with Ashe County, and the southern border is shared with Wilkes County.

McGrady is an unincorporated community in Wilkes County, North Carolina, United States. As of 2015, the population was 993. McGrady is located along North Carolina Highway 18, 14 miles (23 km) north-northwest of Wilkesboro. McGrady has a post office with ZIP code 28649. McGrady is located at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains; the Blue Ridge dominate the community's northern horizon. McGrady consists of numerous valleys with creeks and streams, lower mountain ridges, farms, and forests. The largest stream in the community is Mulberry Creek, which flows south to the Yadkin River, Wilkes County's largest river.

Doughton Park (Doughton Recreational Area) is the largest recreation area the National Park Service manages on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is located between mile markers 238.5 - 244.7 on the border between Wilkes and Alleghany Counties in North Carolina. Doughton Park consists of highland meadows with numerous scenic overlooks, miles of hiking and bridle trails, areas for camping and cookouts, and it is one of the few areas on the Parkway that has a restaurant (called The Bluffs) along with an adjacent visitors center maintained by the National Park Service. Elevations in Doughton Park generally range from 3,500 to 4,000 feet (1,100 to 1,200 m). The park is named after North Carolina politician Robert L. Doughton, who lived in nearby Laurel Springs, North Carolina and who as a US Congressman played a key role in the creation of the Blue Ridge Parkway in the 1930s.

New River State Park is a North Carolina state park in Ashe County, North Carolina in the United States. Located near Jefferson, North Carolina, it covers 3,323 acres (13.45 km2) in the protected New River watershed. The New River is one of the oldest rivers in the United States. It is considered by some geologists to be possibly one of the oldest rivers in the world, between 10 million and 360 million years old. New River State Park is open for year-round recreation, including canoeing, hiking, picnicking, fishing, camping and environmental education. The park is just off U.S. Route 221 in northwestern North Carolina.

Cockerham Mill is a historic grist mill located near Crumpler, Ashe County, North Carolina. It was built between 1884 and 1899, and is a two-story, side-gable, building of post and beam construction. Associated with the mill is the one and a half - story, side-gable single-pile, miller's house (c. 1912), dam (c. 1884 - 1899), molasses cooking shed (c. 1920), and two-story frame gambrel-roof bank barn (c. 1912).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.The original dam for the mill, on Dog Creek, was wholly constructed of dry-stacked stone with a single sluice and single gate. Several attempts were made over the years to remove or demolish the dam, but it proved very sturdy, even to dynamite. The center of the dam top was dislodged by dynamite in the mid 1900s and in the late 80s was concreted over to allow large debris flows over the dam and lessen possible damage. The mill was one of the first homes in the area to have electricity, powered by the dam itself and provided milling services for much of the valley. The mill has undergone several attempts to maintain the structure after several, very destructive storm seasons. The original corner column of dry-stacked river rocks was cement encased in 1984 to prevent further damage from debris impacts from floods. Later, additional support beams were added under the main structure in 2004 to prevent collapse of the mill.

Jefferson Township is one of nineteen townships in Ashe County, North Carolina, United States. The township had a population of 4,718 as of the 2010 census and is the largest township in Ashe County by population. Jefferson Township occupies 33.0 square miles (85.5 km2) in central Ashe County. The incorporated municipalities within Jefferson Township are the town of Jefferson, the county seat of Ashe County, and parts of the town of West Jefferson.

Tumbling Shoals Creek is a 3.52 mi (5.66 km) long 1st order tributary to the Reddies River in Wilkes County, North Carolina. This is the only stream of this name in the United States.

Rendezvous Mountain State Park is a 1,800-acre (7.3 km2) North Carolina state park in Purlear, North Carolina. It was originally established as North Carolina's third state park. From 1984 to early 2022, the park was operated by the North Carolina Forest Service as Rendezvous Mountain Educational State Forest.
