The creek's name most likely is a corruption of Looney('s), the name of an early soldier or settler.

The building is styled with Neo-Colonial design features. The center section features a two-story projecting portico with pediment and supported by four Corinthian order fluted columns.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Also on the property are the contributing wagon shed, storage cellar with granary above, log stable, and smokehouse.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.In 2021, the Hermitage Inn and Taphouse underwent an extensive renovation. The interior and exterior of both the inn and restaurant are fully updated, preserved using Historic Tax Credits, and modernized.

The Board on Geographic Names officially decided upon Cabins as the community's name in 1965. The origin of the name "Cabins" is obscure.
