Square Kauri

Maumaupaki is a mountain in New Zealand 819 m (2687 ft.) above sea level in the North Island. It is in the Coromandel Range on the Coromandel Peninsula. The mountain is about 40 km (25 mi) from the town of Thames.

Waiomu is a settlement on the west coast of the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand, between Tapu to the north and Te Puru to the south. State Highway 25 runs through it. Waiomu Kauri Grove Walk is a hiking trail to a stand of New Zealand kauri trees in Coromandel Forest Park. In the hills above Waiomu lays the abandoned Monowai mine. Parts of it can be seen on the Waiomu Kauri Grove Walk.

Tapu is a locality on the western side of the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand. State Highway 25 runs through it. Coromandel is 35 km to the north, and Thames is 19 km to the south. The Tapu River flows from the Coromandel Range past the settlement and into the Firth of Thames to the west. The "Tapu-Coroglen Road", a windy gravel road, connects it across the Coromandel Range with Coroglen in the east. The Square Kauri is on this road.

The Tapu River (Waipatukahu Stream prior to 1974) is a river of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand's North Island. It flows west from the Coromandel Range, reaching the Firth of Thames at the settlement of Tapu, approximately halfway between Thames and Coromandel. Except for ammoniacal nitrogen, water quality in the river is good, as it mainly drains native forest; only 5.1% of the catchment is farmed. The river runs over andesite and dacite. Fish in the river include long and shortfin eels (tuna), common bully (toitoi), redfin bully, torrentfish (panoko), smelt (pōrohe), īnanga, koura, trout and shrimp. To protect Tapu from flooding, the flow capacity of the river has been maximised. The native frogs, Leiopelma archeyi and Leiopelma hochstetteri, live near the valley. The Tapu-Coroglen Road, opened in 1927, follows the river, passing the Rapaura Watergardens and the square kauri tree. Kauri was logged in the 1880s and 1950s. The SH25 bridge was built about 1937. Gold was mined in the valley from 1868 at several mines and continued until at least the 1930s.

Te Puru is a locality on the western side of the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand. State Highway 25 runs through it. Tapu lies about 7 km to the north, and Thames is about 12 km to the south. The Te Puru Stream and about 18 tributaries drain a steep hilly 23 km2 area of the Coromandel Range, almost entirely covered by native forest. It runs through the settlement and into the Firth of Thames to the west. Flooding has been a problem. Te Puru track runs between Te Puru and Tapu-Coroglen road, intersecting with Waiomu Valley and Crosbies Main Range tramping tracks on the way.

The Te Mata River is a river of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand's North Island. It flows west to reach the Firth of Thames at the small settlement of Te Mata, 25 kilometres (16 mi) south of Coromandel. The river was once used to wash large kauri logs down to the sea. The headwaters were logged for kauri around 1890–1900. Thames Sawmilling Company cut rimu and miro in the 1960s. The higher areas around Papakai weren't logged. The native frogs, Leiopelma archeyi and Leiopelma hochstetteri, live near the valley. Gentle Annie mine produced 4.8 kg of gold between 1887 and 1889. Gentle Annie Stream joins the river about 3 km up from the coast and the find was described as being towards the ridge. The SH25 bridge was built about 1945.

Thornton Bay is a settlement on the west coast of the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand, between Te Puru to the north and Whakatete Bay to the south. State Highway 25 runs through it. Ngarimu Bay immediately to the south is considered to be part of the same urban area by Statistics New Zealand. Thornton's Bay was named for R. Thornton, an orchardist who settled in the area in 1890. Ngarimu Bay is named after Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu, the first Māori person to be awarded the Victoria Cross.

Te Mata is a small village on the western coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, located approximately halfway between Coromandel Town and Thames. It overlooks Te Mata River. The name 'Te Mata' also applies to a hamlet on the other side of the Waikato, 15 km from Raglan and a vineyard and a peak in Hawke's Bay.

The Coromandel Range is a volcanic mountain range in the Coromandel Volcanic Zone running the length of the Coromandel Peninsula in the North Island of New Zealand. It is located 60 kilometres (37 mi) east of the city of Auckland, and runs north–south for approximately 110 kilometres. It is at a right angle to the Tararua ranges. The highest point in the range is Mount Moehau (892 metres/2927 feet), at the northern end of the peninsula within the Moehau Range. There are numerous peaks over 600 metres in height. In pre-European times, the southern Coromandel Range was densely forested by trees such as kauri, mataī and tawa, and was a home for birds such as kererū, tūī, kākā and kiwi. Greywacke from the ranges was a source for many stone tools used by Hauraki Māori. The range is one of several that form a volcanic origin bone running through the northern North Island. To the south of the Coromandel Range, separated by the winding Karangahake Gorge, the bone continues with the Kaimai Range. The large island of Great Barrier, at the entrance to the Hauraki Gulf due north of the Coromandel Peninsula, can be thought of as a northern continuation of this bone of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone.

The Waikawau River is the name of two rivers of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand's North Island. The more southerly flows generally west from its sources in the Coromandel Range, reaching the Firth of Thames at Waikawau Beach, almost 6 km (3.7 mi) north of Tapu. The other flows south east off the Moehau Range to join the Pacific at Waikawau. Both rivers were officially named on 21 June 2019. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "water of the shag" for Waikawau. Fish in the river include longfin eels (tuna), torrentfish (panoko), koaro and īnanga. The area used by the boat ramp (since 2001) and car park is part of a delta formed by the river. Shingle was taken off the delta from at least 1920 to 1937. The 219 ton Devonport Steam Ferry paddle steamer Eagle (1886-1924) was on the beach at least from 1925 to 1927. Former Auckland tram bodies were moved to the south end of the delta in 1953 for use as holiday baches. Ngāati Tamaterā regained the delta and other areas under a Settlement dated 20 September 2017, following Land Court irregularities dating back to 1878. The first bridge over the river was built in 1885. A single lane concrete bridge now carries SH25 over the river.

The Thames-Coromandel District is a territorial authority district in the North Island of New Zealand, covering all the Coromandel Peninsula and extending south to Hikutaia. It is administered by the Thames-Coromandel District Council, which has its seat in the town of Thames. It was the first district council to be formed in New Zealand, being constituted in 1975. The district lies within the Waikato Regional Council area. Its only land boundary is with Hauraki District.

Tararu is a former gold-mining village on the west coast of the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand. State Highway 25 runs through it; Te Puru being about 7 km (4.3 mi) to the north, and Thames about 2 km (1.2 mi) to the south. Tararu has a boat ramp, a 91-dwelling retirement village, a store, 2 motels, a holiday park and is the northern terminus of the Thames Connector bus. The Category 1 former Thames North School opened on 25 January 1878, closed in 1971 and was taken over by Thames Coromandel Council in 1978. It is now Thames Art Gallery. In the 2013 census, Tararu's population was 525, made up of 210 in meshblock 1048800, 138 (1048900), 48 (1048700), 39 (1049000) and 90 (1049100). Tararu is connected to the Thames water supply.
