Cockett railway station

Cockett (Welsh: Coced) is the name of an electoral ward in the City and County of Swansea, Wales, UK. The ward is coterminous with the Cockett community. It elects three councillors. The electoral ward consists of some or all of the following areas: Cadle, Cwmdu, Coedweig, Gendros, Gors, Fforestfach and Cockett, in the parliamentary constituency of Swansea West. The ward is bounded by the wards of Kingsbridge and Penderry to the north; Cwmbwrla to the east; Townhill to the south east; Sketty and Killay North to the south; and Gowerton to the west. Following a local government boundary review, effective from the 2022 local elections, Waunarlwydd was removed from the Cockett ward to become its own ward (and community). As a result, the number of councillors elected in Cockett reduced from four to three.

Foresthall House (or Fforestfach House) was a mansion-like house that existeded in the Swansea suburb of Fforestfach until the 1970s, when the old and crumbling mansion was bought by Swansea Council and demolished in order to make way for various new estates. The mansion was located on the western side of Ravenhill, and had a garden stretching from the mansion itself to the far back end of Cadle Woods. The mansion can be dated from the many Ordnance Survey maps from 1861 to 1868 that show it. The owner of the mansion planted many trees around his land, most notably the Horse Chestnut Tree, which can still be seen today. The owner of the house is blamed for the Japanese knotweed problem in the Swansea area, as in 19th-century Japanese knotweed was used commonly as a potted plant for ornamental use, and was also used on his land to prevent soil erosion.

Fforestfach is a suburban district of Swansea, Wales which developed during the Victorian era as part of the expansion of Swansea, and to service several collieries in the area. It lies within the Cockett ward, between the districts of Waunarlwydd and Cwmbwrla, and contains the areas of Cadle and Ravenhill. The area is residential combined with light industry and retail park; and is close to the M4 motorway and several dual carriageways. Corgi Toys and Walkers Crisps had factories in the area, but they have now ceased their operations here. Local amenities include the premises of the City of Swansea Gymnastic Club, and Ravenhill Park. The nearby places are Portmead, Gendros, Waunarlwydd and Penllergaer.

Gendros is a suburban district of the City and County of Swansea, Wales falling within the Cockett ward. Gendros approximates to the settlement northwest of Carmarthen Road (A483 road) between Cwmdu and Penlan. Other areas surrounding Gendros are Blaen-y-Maes, Ravenhill, Cwmbwrla, Cockett, Fforestfach and Mayhill and Townhill. Its post code begins with SA5. Cockett (Welsh: Y Cocyd) is a district and community in Swansea, Wales falling within Cockett ward. It is located about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north-west of Swansea city centre. It includes the eastern half of Gowerton. Cockett, in common with much of western Swansea, was the result of late Victorian and early twentieth century expansion. More housing estates were developed during the 20th century and further housing was constructed near the Townhill district in the early 2000s. The area now has a broad mix of housing stock. 83 per cent of the property in the Cockett neighbourhood is owner occupied. The South Wales Police regional headquarters for Swansea were based in Cockett, as is Dylan Thomas Community School. The South Wales Police regional headquarters are now located closer to the city centre however. There are a few shops in central Cockett, but the nearest shopping districts are on Carmarthen Road (A483) to the north and the Swansea West Business Park to the north-west. The main road through Cockett is the A4216 road linking Sketty to the south with Fforestfach to the north. Cockett railway station is a currently disused railway station to the north, by Station Road. The old platforms on the West Wales Lines are still in place and there are proposals by South West Wales Integrated Transport Consortium to reinstate this station in the future, which would provide a 10-minute journey to Swansea railway station in the city centre. Cockett is served by First Cymru buses from Swansea bus station: numbers 15 and 17 to Gowerton; number 43 to Morriston Hospital and numbers 400 and 404 to Llanelli.

Townhill is an electoral ward of Swansea, Wales, UK. It is named after the Townhill area of Swansea. The electoral ward consists of some or all of the following geographical areas: Cwm-Gwyn, Mayhill, and Townhill in the parliamentary constituency of Swansea West. The ward is bounded by the wards of Cockett and Cwmbwrla to the north; Castle to the east; and the Uplands to the south. For electoral purposes the local council divides Townhill into a number of polling districts, which are: Pryderi, Dyfed Avenue, Gwynedd Avenue, Gors Avenue, Mayhill North and Mayhill South. The ward returns three councillors who are Geoffrey Burtonshaw, David Hopkins and Billy Jones, all of whom represent the Labour Party.

Portmead (or Port Mead) (Welsh: Porthfedd [pɔrθˈveːð]) is a suburban district of Swansea, Wales which falls within the Penderry ward. Portmead is mostly residential and approximates to the area either side of north western part of Petregethin Road.

Glanmôr School was a secondary school in Swansea in south Wales, founded as Glanmor Central School for boys and girls in 1922 and closed by merger with Bishop Gore Comprehensive School for Boys in 1972. "Glanmôr", or "Glan y Môr", means "seaside" in English. It was situated on Glanmor Hill in Uplands in wooden ex-army buildings. As a central school it had a status between secondary and elementary until 1930, when it was defined as a secondary school. The buildings were requisitioned for the US army during the Second World War, and the boys' school closed in 1941. The girls' school continued as a grammar school until 1972. When the presence of high alumina cement in support structures of other Swansea schools caused their closure in 1974, its buildings were re-used by Olchfa Comprehensive School for two years. The site was cleared in August 1989 and replaced with housing, with the new streets named after some of the school's houses.
