The district was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 and combined with various other local government districts in western Derbyshire to form the new West Derbyshire district.

Bakewell is a market town and civil parish in the Derbyshire Dales district of Derbyshire, England, known for Bakewell pudding. It lies on the River Wye, 15 miles (23 km) south-west of Sheffield. At the 2011 census, the population of the civil parish was 3,949. It was estimated at 3,695 in 2019. The town is close to the tourist attractions of Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall.

Lumford Mill was a historic cotton mill at Bakewell in Derbyshire, England. In 1777, Richard Arkwright leased a stretch of land by the River Wye from Philip Gell of Hopton. He installed his son as manager but there were problems with water rights. Upstream from the mill, they were owned by the Duke of Devonshire and downstream by the Duke of Rutland, both of whom were hostile to industrial development in the area as would later be the case with the railway. But in any case Arkwright had not sought to gain permission, constructing dams and ponds, extracting sand, gravel and soil from land on the Rutland estate, altering the course of the river, and interfering with the Duke of Devonshire's fishing. This resulted in court cases in which Arkwright admitted trespass and paid compensation and a rent of £10 a year. From then on the mill prospered. It was one of the few that Arkwright's son retained when he sold most of his cotton ventures and moved into banking. There were difficulties in recruiting locally, so girls were brought in from Manchester. It was sold in 1860 to the Duke of Devonshire, but it burned down and was rebuilt in around 1890. At its peak it employed some 350 people. In 1898 the mill was taken over by the Dujardin-Plante Company who manufactured electric storage batteries. Throughout this time it continued to use water power with two high breast-shot wheels which had been installed in 1827 and 1852, replacing the original undershot wheel. After a hundred years of almost continuous working, a gear segment of the older wheel broke and jammed, to be replaced by water turbines. Lumford Mill still stands today, under the name of Riverside Business Park Ltd. Proudly continuing its industrial lineage, the site is one of the largest industrial estates within the National Park, and is home to around 40 local businesses, some of which still work out of the old mill buildings. A number of the original mill workers cottages are also still inhabited at the site.

Bakewell Market Hall is a historic building in the town of Bakewell, in Derbyshire, in England. The building was constructed in about 1600 as the town's market hall. Originally, the ground floor was partly open to the street, and the upper floor may have been timber framed. It was altered in the 18th century, with the ground floor arcade filled in. In 1827, the town's administration and courts moved from the Old Town Hall into the upper floor, while the lower floor served as a wash house. The building was extended to the east in 1858, at which time small gables were also added. The council and courts moved into the new Bakewell Town Hall in 1890, and the building became a restaurant. Around this time, two shops were inserted on the west side of the ground floor, and in 1896, the west gable was rebuilt. Later, the building became a rating office, then a dance hall and a library, before becoming the town's tourist information centre. It was grade II listed in 1951."Market Hall". Its front is five bays wide, and most of its windows are mullioned and have leaded lights. The gables have painted shields. The entrance doorway has a Tudor arch. The left side has an oriel window.

Burton Closes is a 19th-century country house, now in use as a residential nursing home, situated at Haddon Road, Bakewell, Derbyshire. It is a Grade II* listed building. The house was newly built in 1848 for John Allcard, a wealthy Quaker banker and stockbroker of Derby. It was originally built as a modest two bedroomed house, to a design by architect Joseph Paxton with interiors by Augustus Pugin and intended as a summer retreat. It was much extended by T D Barry and E W Pugin in 1856 for Allcard's son William, a railway engineer, best known for his 1830 work on the Sankey Viaduct, Warrington, Cheshire, where he was mayor in 1848 and 1851. The Allcard family fortunes were much reduced by a financial downturn in 1866 and 1871 (when William Henry Allcard, a barrister, sold the estate). Further improvements and extensions were made in 1888 by J B Mitchell Withers for the purchaser Smith Taylor-Whithead, who was High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1894.
