Siege of Zierikzee

Zierikzee (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈziːrɪkseː]) is a small city in the southwest Netherlands, 50 km southwest of Rotterdam. It is situated in the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland. The city hall of Schouwen-Duiveland is located in Zierikzee, its largest city. Zierikzee is connected to Oosterschelde through a canal. In 2001, the town of Zierikzee had 10,313 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 3.0 km2, and contained 4,295 residences. The statistical area "Zierikzee", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 10,730.

The battle of Zierikzee was a naval battle between a Flemish fleet and an allied Franco-Hollandic fleet which took place on 10 and 11 August 1304. The battle, fought near the town of Zierikzee, ended in a Franco-Dutch victory. The battle is part of a larger conflict between the Count of Flanders and his French feudal lord, King Philip IV of France (1296–1305).

Schouwen-Duiveland (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌsxʌu.ə(n) ˈdœyvəlɑnt] ) is a municipality and an island in the southwestern Netherlands province of Zeeland. The municipality has 33,737 inhabitants (1 January 2016) and covers an area of 488.94 square kilometres (188.78 square miles) (of which 257.87 square kilometres (99.56 square miles) is water). The northside of the island has two fixed connections to Goeree-Overflakkee, the Brouwersdam and the Grevelingen. The southside has two fixed connections to cross the Oosterschelde to North Beveland, the Stormvloed Kering or Oosterscheldedam, part of the Delta Works and the Zeeland Bridge. The island is mostly flat and is, besides a small area, below the sea level. On the western tip is a dune whose highest point is about 42 meters above sea level. The island is, in the summer, very popular with (German) tourists. The Renesse area is a popular holiday destination for young people. The Brouwersdam is a dam, part of the Delta Works, from Schouwen-Duiveland to Goedereede, the west part of the island of Goeree-Overflakkee in South Holland.

The Sint-Lievensmonstertoren (English: Saint-Livinus Monster Tower), also known as the Dikke Toren (or Fat Tower) is a 62 metre tall, unfinished, free standing church tower in Zierikzee, Netherlands. The accompanying church was destroyed by a fire in 1832. In 1454 work started on a church tower, designed by Andries I Keldermans in the Brabantine Gothic style. It was planned to be, according to different sources, either 130 metres or 204 metres tall (the latter would have made it the tallest church tower in the world by far). The work was continued by his relatives Antoon I Keldermans and Rombout II Keldermans. Work on the tower halted in 1530, when the city went through a financial crisis. The tower is now 62 metres tall, on a base of 24.5 metres by 24.5 metres. Since 1881, it is a property of the state, and it has been designated a Rijksmonument. The name doesn't refer to monsters, but to a minster.

Schuddebeurs is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 3 km north of Zierikzee. During the 17th and 18th century, the affluent merchants from Zierikzee started to build estates in Schuddebeurs as summer residences. Schuddebeurs was home to 55 people in 1840.

Restaurant-Hostellerie Schuddebeurs is a restaurant in Schuddebeurs, near Zierikzee, in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a fine dining restaurant that was awarded one Michelin star for 1986. It was awarded a Bib Gourmand in 2004 and 2005. In 2013, GaultMillau awarded the restaurant 13 out of 20 points. Head chef of Schuddebeurs in the year of the Michelin star was Jaap Tanis, who had shortly before taken over the reins from Martin Hendriks. The Bib Gourmands were awarded to head chef Bart de Bree. The building of the restaurant is in origin a 300-year-old inn. After a major renovation it opened in 1978 as a restaurant with a few rooms.

Kerkwerve is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 24 km southwest of Hellevoetsluis.

Noordgouwe is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 12 km north of Zierikzee.

Kapelle (formerly Capelle) is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland, about 2 km west of Nieuwerkerk. Until 1813, the hamlet was part of the separate municipality of Capelle en Botland. In 1953, Capelle had grown into a small village, with about 20 houses and a population of around 100, when it was almost completely destroyed in the North Sea flood of 1953. All houses except two were swept away, and 42 inhabitants died. The village was not rebuilt; nowadays only a small hamlet remains, consisting of a number of farms. Kapelle should not be confused with some other locations in Zeeland: the hamlet of Looperskapelle on Schouwen-Duiveland, about 12 km to the northwest, which was formerly also known as "Kapelle", and the much larger town of Kapelle on Zuid-Beveland.

Rengerskerke en Zuidland is a former municipality in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It existed until 1813, when it was merged with Kerkwerve.The municipality consisted of two domains, Rengerskerke and Zuidland. Rengerskerke used to be a village about 3 km northwest of Zierikzee, until it was destroyed by a flood in 1662. Zuidland was a polder with a number of villages: Simonskerke, Zuidkerke, Brieskerke, Sint Jacobskerke and the hamlet of 's Heer-Arentshaven. All of the villages were destroyed by floods in the 16th century. In the 19th century, the remaining part of Rengerskerke and Zuidland had a population of only 120.

Nieuwerkerke (also: Nieuwerkerke Schutje) is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 3 km southwest of Brouwershaven.Nieuwerkerke is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Kerkwerve. It was home to 140 people in 1840. Nowadays, it consists of a handful of houses. It used to have a church, but it was destroyed in 1576 by Spanish troops and never rebuilt.Nieuwerkerke was a separate municipality until 1813, when it was merged with Kerkwerve.Nieuwerkerke should not be confused with Nieuwerkerk, a larger village on the same island.

Oosterschelde National Park is a national park in the Dutch province of Zeeland. This national park was established on 8 May 2002. It comprises the Eastern Scheldt (Dutch: Oosterschelde), Keeten-Mastgat, Krabbenkreek, Zijpe, Slaak, and Krammer. The Eastern Scheldt part behind the Oesterdam doesn't belong to the national park. Oosterschelde National Park is surrounded by the following regions: Schouwen-Duiveland, Tholen, Zuid-Beveland, and Noord-Beveland. The Zeeland Bridge crosses the national park.
