The Afon Cothi (also known as the River Cothy) in Carmarthenshire is the largest tributary of the River Tywi in south Wales. From its source at Blaen Cothi in the north of the county, north of Pumsaint, it flows south-east and then turns south-west to flow past Cwrt-y-cadno, Pumsaint, Abergorlech and Pont-ar-Gothi before joining the River Tywi west of the village of Llanarthney. Nantycaws or Nant-y-caws is a rural settlement in the community of Llangunnor, Carmarthenshire, Wales. 'Nant y caws' is Welsh for 'River of the cheese' and probably refers to the rich dairy farmland in the area. The Welsh word for 'milk' has been used in other place names to refer to fertile land. Though plausibly 'Nant y caws' could refer to a cloudy stream, or one with an unpleasant smell.Nantycaws lies largely on the old A48 road to Carmarthen (5 miles away) which was replaced in the 1980s with a dual carriageway, running close to the village. There is a petrol station and restaurant on the A48 and the Nant-y-caws Recycling Centre, located to the east of the village. The Philadelphia Independent Chapel lies on the Llangynnor Road (old A48) and dates from 1809.

Ystrad Tywi (Welsh: [ˈəstrad ˈtəwi], Valley of the river Towy) is a region of southwest Wales situated on both banks of the River Towy, it contained places such as Cedweli, Carnwyllion, Loughor, Llandeilo, and Gwyr (although this is disputed). Although Ystrad Tywi was never a kingdom itself, it was historically a valuable territory and was fought over by the various kings of Dyfed, Deheubarth, Seisyllwg, Gwynedd, Morgannwg and the Normans.

Pont-ar-gothi (otherwise Pontargothi or Cothi Bridge) is a village in Carmarthenshire, West Wales. The village takes its name from the bridge where the A40 Road trunk road crosses the River Cothi. It lies some 10 miles (16 km) east of Carmarthen.

Bishops Pond (Welsh: Pwll yr Esgob) is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in Carmarthenshire, Wales, lying adjacent to the former palace of the Bishop of St Davids (now the Carmarthenshire County Museum). The pond is an oxbow lake, formed when a meander of the River Tywi got cut off from the main river. The water level is topped up in winter as the river floods the valley floor, and the level drops in summer. The pond exhibits a natural succession from lake through swamp to marsh, and will eventually become meadow; this happens because aquatic plants clog the water and there is a gradual build up of organic detritus.

Banc y Betws or Betws Castle, is a motte and scheduled ancient monument in Wales. It is located in Llangyndeyrn, in the Gwendraith Valley in Carmarthenshire, Wales. All that is visible of the structure nowadays is a mound capped with trees and the remains of the ditch that surrounded it.

Allt Penycoed Stream Section is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (or SSSI) in Carmarthenshire, Wales. It is protected by law and has been designated as an SSSI since April 1985 in an attempt to protect rare or unique features or species within it. The site has an area of 1.62 hectares and is managed by Natural Resources Wales. This site is designated due to its geological qualities. In Wales, geological sites range from quarries to rocky outcrops and massive sea-cliffs. 30% of SSSIs in Wales are notified for geological and geomorphological features. This stream section provides valuable information of dense turbidite/shale sequence, demonstrating the base of the member and good sections in the underlying Pibwr mudstones, which shows trilobite faunas representative of major ecological changes related to water depth and oxygenation around 500 million years ago. Trilobites are the fossilized remains of a new extinct group of sea-living arthropods, which have been recorded from this site and helped geologists understand conditions of the sea bed during the accumulation of sediment. The rich fossil assemblage has also enabled geologists to compare this section with rocks of a similar age all through South wales and the rest of the British Isles.
