Snowmass (ski area)

Snowmass Village is a home rule municipality in Pitkin County, Colorado, United States. The population was 3,096 at the 2020 census. A popular winter resort location for skiing and snowboarding, the town is well known as the location of the Snowmass ski area, the largest of the four nearby ski areas operated collectively as Aspen/Snowmass. In 2010, the accidental discovery by a bulldozer operator of fossilized elements of a Pleistocene ecosystem in the ice age lake bed at the Ziegler Reservoir (commonly referred to as the Snowmastodon site) put Snowmass Village prominently on the paleontological map of North America.

Anderson Ranch Arts Center is a non-profit arts organization and art gallery founded in 1966 and located in Snowmass Village, Colorado. The center hosts an artist residency program, summer arts workshops and a January workshop intensive.

The Roman Abramovich Wildcat Ridge house is a 14,300-square-foot (1,330 m2) mansion at Wildcat Ridge near Snowmass Village, Colorado. The 11-bedroom, 12-bath mansion, and 200 acres (81 ha) of land it stands on, called a "ranch" by The Wall Street Journal, have an estimated worth of $50 million as of 2022, and was owned by Roman Abramovich. He bought the property for $36.375 million in 2008, at the time the third most expensive residential real estate transaction in Pitkin County, Colorado.Built in 2004, the architect was Bart Voorsanger, who also designed the Asia Society Museum in Manhattan.Media reported that the property could be subject to sanctions by the United States government during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. County commissioner Greg Poschman asked Colorado Deputy Attorney General Kurtis Morrison to investigate why sanctions to date did not target the property, stating to media his question was "if there was illegal activity and the [United States government] overlooked it for some reason".

The Snowmastodon site, also known as the Ziegler Reservoir fossil site, is the location of an important Ice Age fossil excavation near Snowmass Village, Colorado. Fossils were first discovered on October 14, 2010, during the construction of a 5 hectares (12 acres) reservoir to supply Snowmass Village with water. Over the subsequent weeks, after an agreement had been reached to allow paleontological excavation, crews from the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and the U.S. Geological Survey worked along with the construction crews as more fossil material was uncovered. The site closed for five months over the winter, reopening May 15, 2011. Between May 15 and July 4, 2011, crews from the Denver Museum of Nature & Science conducted a large scale fossil excavation alongside construction crews building a dam for the reservoir. In total over 36,000 vertebrate fossils (including mammoths, mastodons, ground sloths, horses, camels and deer), more than 100 species of fossil invertebrates and over 100 species of fossil plants were found in sediments deposited by an alpine lake during the last interglacial period.

Pitkin County is a county in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,358. The county seat and largest city is Aspen. The county is named for Colorado Governor Frederick Walker Pitkin. Pitkin County has the seventh-highest per capita income of any U.S. county. Measured by mean income of the top 5% of earners, it is the wealthiest U.S. county.Pitkin County is included in the Glenwood Springs Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Edwards-Glenwood Springs Combined Statistical Area.

KSNO-FM (103.9 FM), is a radio station broadcasting a classic rock format. Licensed to Snowmass Village, Colorado, United States, it serves the Aspen and Roaring Fork Valley area, broadcasting from Glenwood Springs to Aspen and into the Snowmass Creek Valley, Redstone and beyond. KSNO was founded as an AM station in 1964 and received its FM licence in the 1980's. The station is owned by Wild Goose LLC and Managed by Andrew C. Scott, founder of the Open Mind Project (www.openmindproject.com), through licensee Wild Goose LLC. KSNO also broadcasts live on the web at www.KSNO.com.

Sievers Mountain is a 12,786-foot (3,897 m) summit in Pitkin County, Colorado, United States.

On March 29, 2001, a chartered Gulfstream III business jet operated by Avjet from Los Angeles, California, to Aspen, Colorado, crashed into the ground while on final approach. All three crew members and 15 passengers on board perished.The subsequent investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) concluded that the cause of the accident was the captain's premature descent below the minimum descent altitude, carried out without having the runway in sight.The accident's investigation also brought into focus several generic safety issues, such as pressure applied on charter pilots by customers, night flight into airports near mountainous terrain, and the ambiguity of some Federal Aviation Administration rules.

St. Benedict's Monastery is a Catholic monastery in Pitkin County, Colorado, in the unincorporated community of Snowmass about 18 miles (29 km) northwest of Aspen. The monks are members of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance, commonly called the Trappists. St. Benedict's is located on over 3,000 acres (1,200 ha) in the foothills of the Elk Mountains, near the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. The monastery protects a large amount of open space in a sensitive area near important wildlife migration routes. The monks manage their ranchlands, operate a cookie bakery, and offer retreat facilities for groups and individuals. A retreat house and guest hermitages are located about 1 mile from the main monastery building. The monastery was founded in 1956 as a foundation established by the Trappist community at St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts. The community celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006. St. Benedict's was the home of Father Thomas Keating, a popular writer on centering prayer and one of the founders of Contemplative Outreach. In April 2023, St. Benedict's signaled that it would close, and that Dom Damian Carr, former abbot of St. Joseph's Abbey, had been appointed as monastic commissary to oversee the closure process.

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (IATA: ASE, ICAO: KASE, FAA LID: ASE), also known as Sardy Field, is a county-owned public-use airport located three nautical miles (6 km) northwest of the central business district of Aspen, in Pitkin County, Colorado, United States. Aspen/Pitkin Co. Airport/Sardy Field covers an area of 573 acres (232 ha) at an elevation of 7,820 feet (2,384 m) above mean sea level. It has one asphalt paved runway designated 15/33 which measures 8,006 by 100 feet (2,440 x 30 m).It is included in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2019–2023, in which it is categorized as a non-hub primary commercial service facility.

KASP-LP (107.9 MHz FM) is a low-power radio station rebroadcasting NOAA Weather Radio station WWG43 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Licensed to Aspen, Colorado, United States, it serves the Aspen area. The station is currently owned by the Colorado Department of Transportation.
