Nilkhet (নীলক্ষেত) is a neighbourhood in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. It is located between Dhaka University to the east, Mirpur Road and New Market to the west, and Elephant Road to the north. The name Nilkhet (nil: blue or indigo, khet: field) implies that the area may have been used for indigo cultivation in earlier times. However, Nilkhet has a completely different identity today. The market has long been the center of the second-hand book trade in Dhaka. It contains several dozen shops that deal in used books and magazines, especially English-language material published in the West. The Nilkhet is regularly patronized by the city's English-language readers, who go there in search of foreign books, journals and comics that are either unavailable elsewhere or only available new at a prohibitive price. Thousands of people regularly visit Nilkhet book stores to find out their daily necessary books. Because of its proximity to Dhaka University, Dhaka Medical College and BUET, as well as several major colleges such as Dhaka College, Eden College and College of Home Economics the Nilkhet market has also become a major source of academic material for the city's students. Textbooks of all levels (from primary to tertiary) and for all disciplines may be purchased at Nilkhet. It also has many shops that provide auxiliary services for students, such as photocopying, word-processing and book-binding. Indeed, “photocopying at Nilkhet” is a common rite of passage for nearly all students of nearby universities during their undergraduate and postgraduate years.

New Paltan (Azimpur Natun Paltan in Dhaka City Corporation records) is near Dhaka's New Market in Azimpur. Several markets and a number of educational institutions (Dhaka University's Institute of Social Welfare and Research and arts faculty, Dhaka College, Government Laboratory High School, Dhaka City College and Eden Mohila College) are nearby. Border Guards Bangladesh headquarters is in neighbouring Pilkhana.

Tokai Market (Bengali: টোকাই মার্কেট) is a commercial shopping market in north of Azimpur, Dhaka. It is situated on the opposite side of Chandni Chowk.

The Bangladesh Rifles revolt, also known as the Pilkhana massacre or Pilkhana tragedy, was a mutiny that took place on 25–26 February 2009 in Dhaka, when a group of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) personnel seized the force’s headquarters in Pilkhana. The mutineers killed Director General Shakil Ahmed, 56 other army officers and 17 civilians, fired on bystanders, held officers and their families hostage, and looted and vandalised property. Unrest later spread to several other cities before the rebels surrendered following negotiations with the government. In 2013, a Dhaka court convicted hundreds of accused BDR personnel in what international human rights organisations criticised as an unfair mass trial. On 23 December 2024, the Ministry of Home Affairs established a seven-member commission to re-investigate the incident, which reported in November 2025 that the mutiny had been a planned operation rather than a spontaneous uprising, alleging involvement of senior Awami League figures, including incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and flagging evidence destruction and gaps in the original probe.

Agrani School and College was established at Azimpur, Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1957 as a kindergarten. From the inception, the medium of instruction was English, although vernacular was also taught in all classes. It was upgraded into a secondary school for girls in 1967. It introduced higher secondary courses in 1994, when it got a new status of school cum college. It offers courses in humanities, commerce and science. There are approximately 4,500 students.

The Government Laboratory High School is a school located in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The school was established on 3 September 1961.It is a boy's school .

Dhaka College (Bengali: ঢাকা কলেজ also known as DC) is the oldest secular educational institution of Bangladesh located in Dhaka. It offers higher secondary education (HSC). It has Honours and Masters programs as well which are affiliated to the University of Dhaka.

Azimpur Mosque (Bengali: আজিমপুর মসজিদ) is located beside the Azimpur graveyard in Dhaka. A Persian inscription in the mosque indicates that the mosque was built in 1746 AD by Fayzul Alam. The mosque was built during the reign of Mughal Nawab Alivardi Khan and is the last existing example of a mosque structure with a single dome and a flanking half-domed vault on both sides.

Azimpur (Bengali: আজিমপুর) is an old region in the old part of Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh. The region is named after Shahzada Azam, son of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Other accounts attribute the name to Azim-us-Shaan, the Nayeb-e-Nazim of Dhaka during the early 18th century. This area started to decay in the colonial era. In 1850 Azimpur shown as a no man's land in the map of surveyor general. In 1950 this area redesigned as the government employee's residence.

Balaka is a movie theater located in New Market, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Balaka Cineworld, one of the oldest movie theaters in the country, was closed on 20 March 2020 for COVID-19 epidemic, but reopened on 29 September 2022.

Chandni Chowk (Bengali: চাঁদনি চক) or Chandni Chowk Shopping Complex is one of markets in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is situated in Mirpur Road, near to New Market. This market area is under New Market Thana. It is closed on Tuesdays of the week.The market, which has 1,200 shops, sells a variety of products including clothes, jewelery and shoes. It is popular for buying and selling products on the occasion of Eid.The incident of Eve teasing in the market on March 24, 2018 was criticized in the country. On October 21, 2020, a building of Chandni Chowk caught fire.

Government Teachers' Training College, Dhaka is a public college for training government teachers in Dhaka, Bangladesh.It offers four-year (eight-semester) integrated Bachelor of Education, one-year professional Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) and Master of Education (M.Ed). Some teaching-learning related training programs by different projects are run in the college. It is situated at the heart of the city in New Market area.
