Battersby railway station

Battersby is a hamlet in North Yorkshire, England. It lies on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and within the historic boundaries of the North Riding of Yorkshire, 5 miles (8 km) east of Stokesley, and 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south-west of Kildale. The settlement is mentioned in the Domesday Book as being part of the hundred of Langbaurgh, and having one ploughland. The name is recorded in 1086 as Badresbi, and in the 14th century as Batheresby. The first part is an Old Norse name (Bothvar or Boðvarr), and the by means farmstead. In the Late Middle Ages a watermill was employed on the local beck (Otter Hills Beck, and affluent of the River Leven) to grind corn. Until 1974, the hamlet was in the North Riding of Yorkshire, part of the Stokesley Rural District, being transferred to the Hambleton District of the newer county of North Yorkshire. In 2023 the districts were abolished to be replaced by the unitary North Yorkshire Council. It is now part of the civil parish of Ingleby Greenhow, and is represented at the Houses of Parliament as part of the Richmond and Northallerton constituency.

Ingleby Greenhow is a village and civil parish in the county of North Yorkshire, England. It is on the border of the North York Moors and 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Great Ayton. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the district of Hambleton, it is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council. The parish of Ingleby Greenhow has records of a John Thomasson de Grenehow, a member of the clergy, who in 1376 "had to appear before a Commission appointed to be tried with several others for either poaching or cutting down timber, or destroying property belonging to Peter de Malo Luca the 6th, of Mulgrave Castle". The name may derive from the Saxon for Englishman's green hill. How, derived from the Old Norse word haugr, means hill or mound. Ingleby Manor was bought by a Scottish courtier David Foulis in 1608. St Andrew's Church, Ingleby Greenhow, was almost entirely rebuilt in 1741, but has a Norman chancel arch inside. In 1931, British altitude and distance records for gliders were established over the moors near here, as recounted by the novelist, pilot, and aeronautical engineer Nevil Shute in his memoir, Slide Rule. The glider, a Tern produced by Shute's company, Airspeed Ltd. was flown by a skilled German sailplane pilot, Carl Magersuppe, who had been hired by Airspeed.

Ingleby Manor is a historic building in Ingleby Greenhow, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The manor house was built in about 1540 for William Eure. In 1608, the family sold it to Sir David Foulis. It was extended in the 17th century, the work including a cellar, and dormer windows. It was altered in the 18th century, and then greatly changed in the 19th century, this work including changes to all the elevations, and complete remodelling of the upper floor. The building was grade II* listed in 1952. The house is built of stone, with a rectangular double courtyard plan, and a hipped Roman tile roof with stone ridges, coping and moulded kneelers, and fronts of seven and twelve bays. The northwest front has a central three-storey tower and flanking two storey three-bay wings. The tower contains a four-centred arched doorway, above which is a tripartite window, a two-light mullioned window with a hood mould, a string course, and an embattled parapet. The wings contain sash windows with chamfered surrounds, and in the bays flanking the tower are attic dormers with shaped pediments containing relief busts in the tympana.

Ingleby railway station was a railway station built to serve the village of Ingleby Greenhow in North Yorkshire, England. The station was on the North Yorkshire and Cleveland's railway line between Sexhow and Ingleby, which opened in 1857. The line was extended progressively until it met the Whitby & Pickering Railway at Grosmont. Ingleby station was closed in 1954 to passengers and four years later to goods. The station was located 19 miles (31 km) south of Stockton, and only 3⁄4 mile (1.2 km) west of Battersby railway station.

St Andrew's Church is a parish church in Ingleby Greenhow, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The church was originally built in the late 12th century, from which period the chancel arch, arcade in the nave, and lower part of the tower survive. The chancel was rebuilt in the 13th century, and the remainder of the church was rebuilt in 1741. A vestry was added in 1906, to a design by Temple Moore. The building was grade I listed in 1966. The church is built of stone, and consists of a west turret, a nave, a north aisle, a south porch, a chancel and a north vestry. The turret has contains a slit window on the west side, the bell stage is corbelled out on the west side and has louvred bell openings, above which is a coved cornice, and a pyramidal roof with a pyramidal finial. The porch is gabled, and the inner doorway has a round arch with imposts and a keystone. The chancel has a 12th-century door on the south side, while most of the windows date from 1741. Inside, there is an effigy of Willimus Wrelton, a priest who died in about 1300, and one of a knight, which is probably 15th century. There is a 12th-century tub font on what is probably a 13th-century base.

St Agatha's Chapel is a private Anglican chapel in Easby, a village near Stokesley in North Yorkshire, in England. A chapel was dedicated in Easby in the 14th century, but it appears to have been dissolved by the reign of Edward VI of England. In 1881, a new private chapel was built on the initiative of James Emerson of Easby Hall. It was designed by James Fowler in the Early English style and incorporated a mausoleum. The stained glass was designed by Powell Brothers. The church was grade II listed in 1966. The chapel consists of a continuous two-bay nave and chancel, a north vestry, an octagonal mausoleum at the east end, and a west steeple. The steeple has a tower containing a west doorway with a pointed arch and a moulded surround. Above it is a timber bell stage, and a shingled broach spire with an iron crown and weathervane. The windows on the body of the church are lancets, and the mausoleum has pointed blank arcading with foliate capitals, and a pointed roof. Inside, there is a staircase to a small west gallery, and a stone reredos and pulpit.

Easby is a village and civil parish in Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It lies approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) south-east of Great Ayton. The larger village of Low Easby lies 0.3 miles (480 m) down the road, but neither have any amenities, only a postbox. The name Easby comes from Old Norse and means farmstead or village of a man called Esa.

Easby Moor is a hill located in the civil parish of Little Ayton in the North York Moors national park within the Cleveland Hills, North Yorkshire, England. At the peak, 324 metres (1,063 ft) above sea level, is a monument to Captain James Cook, who was native to the area. The Cleveland Way runs over the moor. The moor overlooks the villages of Easby and Great Ayton and Little Ayton.

Drummer Hill Farm is a historic farm near Ingleby Greenhow, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The Victoria County History describes the parish of Ingleby Greenhow as "a desolate and thinly-populated region", but it does support several farms. Drummer Hill Farm has supported a mixture of arable and livestock farming. The principal interest is in a range of outbuildings. A barn and attached cart lodge with a granary above were constructed in the early 19th century, followed in the middle of the century by an engine house. The granary was later converted into a hay loft. The building was grade II* listed in 1990. The buildings are constructed of stone and some red brick, with an eaves band, and a pantile roof with a stone ridge and coping. The barn is of four bays and has a gabled engine house, and the cart lodge has three bays. On the front are external steps, and the openings include two elliptical arched entrances, slit vents and a stable door. Inside the engine house is a rare example of a horse engine in its original location. It consists of a wheel on a stone base, with an iron post in the centre, and wooden braces which connect with the crossbeams.

St Cuthbert's Church is the parish church of Kildale, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. There was a church in Kildale in the mediaeval period. In 1848, it was described as "a very ancient structure, said to have been founded at an early period of the heptarchy", although it had been largely rebuilt in 1714. It was demolished and rebuilt in 1868, to a design by George Fowler Jones, in a 13th-century Gothic style. The building was grade II listed in 1966. The church is built of stone with Welsh slate roofs. It consists of a nave, a north aisle, a south porch, a chancel with a north vestry, and a west tower. The tower has two stages, corner buttresses, a southeast stair turret with a trefoil band and a spire with a polygonal turret and a grotesque finial, a two-light west window and slit windows, single-light bell openings, a dentilled eaves band with gargoyles, and a pyramidal roof with a weathervane. Inside, there are two fonts, one probably 12th century and the other probably 16th century. There are four mediaeval grave covers in the porch, and the circular head of a mediaeval cross is at the west end. The east window has stained glass by Charles Eamer Kempe.
