Polnessan (Scottish Gaelic: Poll an Easain, pool on the small waterfall) is a small rural village in East Ayrshire, Scotland. Polnessan has a population of 87, and is located a mile north of Patna on the A713 road. Polnessan has no facilities, and is effectively a long row of council housing. The houses were originally built by Ayr County Council for miners and their families on the Houldsworth pit, a nearby coal mine first sunk by Dalmellington Iron Company in 1900. There are bus services to Ayr and Dalmellington regularly from Polnessan, run by the Stagecoach bus company, as well as postal facilities.

Hollybush railway station was a railway station in East Ayrshire, Scotland that served the nearby Hollybush Hotel and the rural district. The line on which the old station stands was originally part of the Ayr and Dalmellington Railway, worked and later owned by the Glasgow and South Western Railway. The station, opened as Hollybush later became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway and was closed by the British Railways Board (BRB).

Martnaham Loch (NS 396 172) is a freshwater loch lying across the border between East and South Ayrshire Council Areas, two kilometres (1+1⁄4 miles) from Coylton, in the parishes of Coylton and Dalrymple, three miles (five kilometres) from Ayr. The loch lies along an axis from northeast to southwest. The remains of a castle lie on a possibly artificial islet within the loch. The Campbells of Loudoun once held the lands, followed by the Kennedys of Cassillis.

Cairntable Halt railway station was a railway station serving a rural district and the miners' row of forty-eight houses at the Cairntable Terraces, East Ayrshire, Scotland. The station was opened as late as circa 1928 by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway on the Holehouse Junction to Rankinston line.

It is quite visible and is situated in a low-lying area close to the B742 road between the farms and dwellings of Trees, Lochfergus and Bowmanston in the Parish of Ayr, South Ayrshire, Scotland. The loch lies to the north of Martnaham Loch, four miles (six kilometres) east-southeast of Ayr. It drains to the southwest into the Snipe Loch.

Snipe Loch (NS385173) or Loch Snipe is a freshwater loch. It is situated in a low-lying area close to the B742 road next to Clocaird Farm in the Parish of Coylton, East Ayrshire, Scotland. The loch lies to the north of Martnaham Loch, 5 miles (7 km) east of Ayr.

Millmannoch, also once known locally as the 'Mill of Mannoch' or Kilmannoch, is a ruined mill and hamlet in the old Barony of Sundrum, South Ayrshire, Parish of Coylton, Scotland about a mile from Coylton and Drongan. The 'Trysting Tree' of Robert Burns's poem The Soldier's Return stood nearby. A smithy was once located here in addition to the miller's cottage and later, a farm.
