Battle of Boldon Hill

East Boldon is a Tyne and Wear Metro station, serving the villages of Cleadon and East Boldon, South Tyneside in Tyne and Wear, England. It joined the network on 31 March 2002, following the opening of the extension from Pelaw to South Hylton.

The Boldons are a group of three small villages in the north east of England – East Boldon, West Boldon and Boldon Colliery – north of Sunderland, east of Newcastle and south of South Shields and Jarrow. In 2001 they had a population of 13,271.Lying within the historic boundaries of County Durham, the villages are first recorded in print in 1170. Their names evolved from the words "Bold" or "Botl", meaning a building, and "dun", meaning a type of hillfort.In 1866, work began sinking a pit that began producing coal in 1869, and was then known as Boldon New Winning. The village that developed nearby in the 1870s became known as Boldon Colliery. When the mine was deepened and extended in the 1910s, further housing to accommodate the workforce was built to the south of the pit in an area known as Boldon New Town. Until 1974 the area was administered as an urban district of County Durham, but since then has been part of the borough of South Tyneside. In 1976, the Boldon Colliery Band appeared in episode 13 of the television series When the Boat Comes In. The mine closed in 1982 but more jobs became available when an Asda supermarket opened in 1987. Recent developments include Boldon Business Park. Boldon Colliery also has its own multi-screen cinema operated by Cineworld. The main secondary school in the area is Boldon School, a specialist sports college.

South Tyneside is a metropolitan borough in the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear, England. It is bordered by all four other boroughs in Tyne and Wear: Gateshead to the west, Sunderland in the south, North Tyneside to the north and Newcastle upon Tyne to the north-west. The border county of Northumberland lies further north. The borough was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the County Borough of South Shields with the municipal borough of Jarrow and the urban districts of Boldon and Hebburn from County Durham. Part of the Tyneside conurbation, the sixth largest in the United Kingdom, South Tyneside has a geographical area of 24.88 sq mi (64.4 km2) and an estimated population of 153,700 (mid-year 2010), measured at the 2011 Census as 148,127. It is bordered to the east by the North Sea and to the north by the River Tyne. A Green Belt of 9.13 sq mi (23.6 km2) is at its southern boundary. The main administrative centre and largest town is South Shields. Other riverside towns are Jarrow and Hebburn, while the villages of Cleadon, Whitburn and The Boldons border the South Tyneside green belt, with Wearside to the south at Sunderland. South Tyneside is represented by two Members of Parliament in two constituencies: South Shields (including Whitburn) and Jarrow and Gateshead East (which also serves Hebburn, the urban fringe villages, and the eastern parts of Gateshead).

Boldon School is a coeducational secondary school located in Boldon Colliery, South Tyneside, England.A community school administered by South Tyneside Metropolitan Borough Council, it has a specialism in sports. The school relocated to a new £17.5 million building in 2006. Boldon School offers GCSEs, BTECs and Cambridge Nationals as programmes of study for pupils. The school also operates a vocational sixth form which offers NVQs and further BTECs.

Red House Academy (RHA, formerly Hylton Red House School) is an 11–16 mixed secondary school with academy status in Hylton Red House, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England. It was formerly a community school and adopted its present name after becoming an academy in 2009. It is part of the Northern Education Trust.

Wise Academies Trust formerly the Bexhill and Town End Academies Limited is a multi-academy trust (MAT) that operates twelve schools with academy status across northern England: all are primary schools. It is an exempt charity, regulated by the Department for Education.

North East Learning Trust is a multi-academy trust (MAT) that operates nine schools with academy status across northern England: three are primary schools and five are secondary. One is a ITT training school. It is an exempt charity, regulated by the Department for Education.

Sunderland Greyhound Stadium is a greyhound racing track situated at Fulwell in the City of Sunderland and English county of Tyne and Wear. The stadium is owned by ARC and racing takes place every Wednesday and Friday evening as well as an additional BAGS meeting on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The circumference of the track is 378 metres.

Witherwack is a suburb in the north of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England, situated between Red House to the west, Carley Hill to the east and Marley Pots to the south. The origin of the name Witherwack is unknown. The spelling of the name has changed since the Ordnance Survey maps of 1862 (and as late as 1945) on which it was spelled Whitherwhack.The area is an overspill council estate, usually regarded as part of Greater Southwick, and was built in the 1960s. In common with most estates in Sunderland, the street names all start with the same letter - 'W' in the case of Witherwack. The whole of the estate falls within the SR5 postal code and is represented by three Labour councillors as part of the Southwick ward on Sunderland City Council.

Hylton Red House, known locally just as Red House (often spelled as Redhouse), is a suburb in the north east of Sunderland, England, situated between Downhill to the west and Marley Pots and Witherwack to the east. The area, Hylton Red House, is one of the largest council housing schemes in England. In common with most estates in Sunderland, the street names all start with the same letter - 'R' in the case of Red House. The whole of the estate falls within the SR5 postal code. Red House is home to Red House Academy (on the site of the original Hylton Red House Comprehensive School), which was the third biggest school in Britain at one point educating over 3500 students. The school was eventually demolished in 2008 after finishing in the lowest 1% of schools in the U.K for 19 years concurrently. Northern Saints VA Primary school, (on the site of the original Hylton Red House Primary school) and English Martyrs Roman Catholic Primary School. Bishop Harland Church of England Primary school was closed down. Pubs in Hylton Red House include Red House Workman's Club, The Last Orders (formally The Shipwrights Arms), Heppies Club (formally Hepworth & Grandage Club) and The Red House Community Centre.

Temple Memorial Park is a park in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, England, given to the public by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1946 and named after William Temple, the former archbishop of Canterbury.

Biddick Hall is an area in the town of South Shields, in Tyne and Wear, England. Biddick Hall is known for its infant and junior school as well as its conveniences and shops.
