Carrer de Joaquín Costa is a street in the city centre of Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain). It belongs to the neighbourhood of Raval, beginning at Plaça de Goya by Ronda de Sant Antoni and finally converging into Carrer del Carme. The area surrounding it is a well-known nightlife district, and many bars . From working class beginnings, the street has been in a continuous state of gentrification during the 2000s (decade) and has become more mainstream attention in recent years, as well as a residential area home to many Filipino and Pakistani immigrants. Teatre Goya and the Aragonese Cultural Centre are on the northern end of Joaquín Costa.

Universitat is a Barcelona Metro station named after Plaça de la Universitat, split between Eixample and Ciutat Vella districts of Barcelona, where the station is located in. This square holds the historical building of Universitat de Barcelona, celebrated for its neo-gothic style. The station is accessible for disabled persons since 1995, when Barcelona Metro line 2 opened its platforms. It is served by TMB-operated Barcelona Metro lines L1 and L2.

The Plaça de la Universitat (official Catalan-language name since 1980; Spanish: Plaza de la Universidad) is one of Barcelona's central squares, at the border between the districts of Eixample and Ciutat Vella. It is located at the intersection of Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, Carrer d'Aribau and Ronda de Sant Antoni. It is also just west of Plaça de Catalunya, to which it is linked by the Ronda de la Universitat and Carrer de Pelai. The plaza is named for the University of Barcelona, whose neo-Gothic main campus lies on its northwest side. The main University building was built between 1863 and 1889 by the architect Elies Rogent, who also devised the square in 1874, at the time when the Eixample was being built after the complete demolition of the city walls. Along with Plaça d'Urquinaona, it is arguably one of the most common gathering-places for demonstrations in the city, as well as offering a pedestrianised area popular with skaters. There square is also surrounded by a number of shops and restaurants, and a primary school.

The siege of Barcelona of 1697 was successfully conducted during the Nine Years' War by France. Louis Joseph, Duke of Vendôme, commanding some 32,000 troops (reinforced with troops from the ended Italian front of the war), forced the garrison, under Prince George of Hesse-Darmstadt, to capitulate on 10 August. Nevertheless, it had been a hard fought contest: according to John Lynn, French casualties totalled around 9,000, while the losses on the Spanish side were 12,000 killed, wounded, or lost, although Antonio Espino López has set the figure for Spanish losses at 4,500 killed and 800 wounded, and the French casualties at 15,000, including 52 engineers.

The Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (also known by its acronym, CCCB) is an arts centre in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Situated in the Raval district, the Centre’s core theme is the city and urban culture. The CCCB organizes exhibitions, debates, festivals and concerts, film cycles, courses, lectures, and other activities.

The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (Catalan: Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, IPA: [muˈzɛw ˈðaɾt kuntəmpuˈɾani ðə βəɾsəˈlonə], MACBA) is a contemporary art museum situated in the Plaça dels Àngels, in El Raval, Ciutat Vella, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The museum opened to the public on November 28, 1995. Previous directors include Daniel Giralt-Miracle (1988–1994), Miquel Molins Nubiola (1995–1998), Manuel J. Borja-Villel (1998–2007), Bartomeu Marí (2008-2015), and Ferran Barenblit (2015-2021), while the current director is Elvira Dyangani Ose.

Sant Antoni is a station on line 2 of the Barcelona Metro, opened in 1995. It is located in the Sants-Montjuïc district, under the Ronda de Sant Antoni. The station has tracks on either side of an island platform, with a ticket hall at either end of the station. There are a total of three entrances: two to the south, on c/ Sant Antoni Abat and c/Comte d'Urgell, and one to the north, at c/ Villaroel. The station is wheelchair-accessible. Sant Antoni is widely accepted to be the inspiration to the Wachowski brothers for the Mobil Avenue Train Station program in The Matrix Revolutions. The station in the film is a program created to transfer programs from the real world into the Matrix.

The University of Barcelona (Catalan: Universitat de Barcelona, UB; IPA: [uniβəɾsiˈtad də βəɾsəˈlonə]; Spanish: Universidad de Barcelona) is a public university located in the city of Barcelona, Catalonia in Spain. With 63,000 students, it is one of the biggest universities in Spain. It is one of the oldest universities in both Catalonia and Spain, established in 1450. It is considered one the best universities in Spain. Overall, the UB has been ranked 1st in Spain in most of the 2021-2022 rankings and is located around the 50th place in Europe.It has 106 departments and more than 5,000 full-time researchers, technicians and research assistants, most of whom work in the 243 research groups as recognized and supported by the Government of Catalonia. In 2010, the UB was awarded 175 national research grants and 17 European grants and participated in over 500 joint research projects with the business sector, generating an overall research income of 70 million euros. The work of these groups is overseen by the UB's research centres and institutes which collaborate with leading research institutions and networks in Spain and abroad. The UB is also home to three large research foundations: the Barcelona Science Park Foundation (PCB), which includes the Institute of Biomedical Research of Barcelona (IRBB); the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS); and the Bellvitge Institute for Biomedical Research (IDIBELL). The Gaixample (pronounced [ɡəˈʃamplə]; portmanteau: gai, Catalan for '"gay"', and eixample, "extension") is the nickname of a central area in Barcelona's Eixample district where, since the end of the 20th century, many gay shops, bars, discos and restaurants have existed. Many LGBTs have settled in this area of the Catalan capital, making it a mecca for LGBT tourists, mainly at night-time. The Gaixample is bordered by the following streets: Carrer de Balmes, Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, Carrer del Comte d'Urgell and Carrer d'Aragó. Carrer Diputació between the streets of Aribau and Villarroel has a greater density of gay businesses. Rainbow flags can be seen sometimes in this area. Several gay-friendly hotels operate in the area.

Urgell is a Barcelona Metro station, named after the Carrer del Comte d'Urgell, in the Eixample district of the city of Barcelona. The station is served by line L1.The station is located under the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes between the Carrer del Comte d'Urgell and the Carrer de Villarroel. The station can be accessed from entrances on the Gran Via, the Comte d'Urgell and the Carrer de Villarroel. It has twin tracks, flanked by two 88-metre (289 ft) long side platforms.Urgell is one of the oldest metro stations in the city, as it is part of the first section of line L1 (then the Ferrocarril Metropolitano Transversal de Barcelona) between Catalunya and Bordeta stations, which was opened in 1926.

The Barcelona Centre for International Affairs, CIDOB, is a Spanish think tank headquartered in Barcelona, devoted to research in the field of international relations. It defines itself as an "independent institution" that, "based on criteria of excellence and relevance, has as scope of study the analysis of international relations and global issues that affect governance at different levels, from international to local". CIDOB has the "goal of being a useful tool for society and institutions in Europe, Spain, and Catalonia, and their influence on the debates that inform decision-making processes in the political, economic, and social spheres". Likewise, the centre "is committed to innovation, rigor in research, public service, and collaborative work".. Legally speaking, CIDOB is a private foundation endowed with a board of trustees made up of the main public institutions and universities of Barcelona and Catalonia. Both the centre and the foundation are governed by statutes, a code of ethics, and a master plan. At present, CIDOB is the oldest think tank in Spain and one of the most influential in its area, at the European level.

The Episcopal Public Library of Barcelona (Spanish: Biblioteca Pública Episkcopal de Barcelona, BPEB), also called the Episcopal Public Library of the Seminary of Barcelona (Biblioteca Pública Episcopal del Seminari de Barcelona) is a library located in the building of the Conciliar Seminary of Barcelona. Founded in 1772, it is the oldest preserved public access library in the city of Barcelona, Spain. It houses a large collection of old and modern books, with about 360,000 volumes.The BPEB belongs to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Barcelona and is its central library. It forms part of the library system of the Ramon Llull University and collaborates with the Collective Catalogue of the Catalan Bibliographic Heritage.
