Bignor Hill

Barkhale Camp is a Neolithic causewayed enclosure, an archaeological site on Bignor Hill, on the South Downs in West Sussex, England. Causewayed enclosures were built in England from shortly before 3700 BC until at least 3500 BC; they are characterized by the full or partial enclosure of an area with ditches that are interrupted by gaps, or causeways. Their purpose is not known; they may have been settlements, meeting places, or ritual sites. The Barkhale Camp enclosure was first identified in 1929, by John Ryle, and was surveyed the following year by E. Cecil Curwen, who listed it as a possible Neolithic site in a 1930 paper which was the first attempt to list all the causewayed enclosures in England. A small trench was dug in 1930 by Ryle, and a more extensive excavation was undertaken by Veronica Seton-Williams between 1958 and 1961, which confirmed Curwen's survey and found a characteristically Neolithic assemblage of flints. Peter Leach conducted another excavation before the southern part of the site was cleared of trees in 1978, examining several mounds within the enclosure, and attempting to determine the line of the ditch and bank along the southern boundary. No material suitable for radiocarbon dating was recovered, which meant that dating the site was not possible with any precision, but Leach suggested that the site had been constructed in the earlier Neolithic, between 4000 BC and 3300 BC. The site is owned by the National Trust. It has been protected as a scheduled monument since 1967.

Bignor is a village and civil parish in the Chichester district of the English county of West Sussex, about six miles (9.7 km) north of Arundel. It is in the civil parish of Pulborough. The nearest railway station is 3.3 miles (5.3 km) south east of the village, at Amberley. The area of the parish is 471 hectares (1,160 acres). According to the 2001 census Bignor had a population of 103 people living in 43 households. The village is next to the line of Stane Street, an important Roman road, where it ascends the escarpment of the South Downs. The modern track from the village to the hill top climbs steeply up to and then roughly follows the Roman route, but before the car park at the top Stane Street can be seen as a wide flat terraceway below the modern track.

Bignor Roman Villa is a large Roman courtyard villa which has been excavated and put on public display on the Bignor estate in the English county of West Sussex. It is well known for its high quality mosaic floors, which are some of the most complete and intricate in the country.

Sutton is a village and civil parish in the District of Chichester in West Sussex, England, located six kilometres (4 miles) south of Petworth and east of the A285 road. The parish has a land area of 920 hectares (2272 acres). In the 2001 census 192 people lived in 83 households, of whom 83 were economically active. The 2011 Census population included the village of Barlavington and hamlet of Codmore Hill. The village has an Anglican church, St John the Baptist, and one pub, the White Horse.

Duncton to Bignor Escarpment is a 229-hectare (570-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Pulborough in West Sussex. It is a Special Area of Conservation and Bignor Hill is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I.

Bury Hill is an area of West Sussex, England, north of Arundel and southwest of Bury. In the 18th century, its name may have sometimes been spelled Berry or Bery Hill, and it was used as a venue for cricket matches.Its earliest known definite use for cricket was in June 1730 for a match between the 2nd Duke of Richmond's XI and Sir William Gage's XI. In August 1745, it was used for a match between a Sussex side and a Surrey team, the third in a series of matches between the two sides. The area appears to have remained in use for cricket matches until the 1770s, with references to matches which were scheduled to be played on the hill in 1771 and 1774.

Bignor Park is a privately owned country house and estate near the village of Bignor, in West Sussex, England, on the edge of the South Downs. The house is a Grade II listed building.

West Burton is a small hamlet in the Parish of Bury and the Chichester district of West Sussex, England. It lies between Bignor and Bury on the Lower Greensand ridge, 4.5 miles (7.2 km) southwest of Pulborough. It is one of a string of Saxon settlements at the foot of the South Downs escarpment where springs from the chalk strata provided clean reliable water supply.

Madehurst is a small village and civil parish in the Arun District of West Sussex, England on the south slopes of the South Downs in the South Downs National Park. It is three miles (5 km) north-west of Arundel, to the west of the A29 road. The village of Madehurst is in two well-wooded valleys, listed in park guides.

Barlavington is a small village and civil parish in the Chichester district of West Sussex, England. The village is situated about four miles (6.4 km) south of Petworth, east of the A285 road. At the 2011 Census the population was included in the civil parish of Sutton. The nearest railway station is five miles (8.0 km) northeast of the village, at Pulborough. St Mary's Church was built between 1160 and 1190. Most of the church was built in Early English style. The parish covers an area of 397 hectares (980 acres). According to the 2001 census it had a population of 117 people living in 35 households. Owing to the presence of a retirement home only 36 people were economically active.

Dale Park was an English country house in Madehurst, West Sussex.

Fairmile Bottom is a 70.2-hectare (173-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-west of Arundel in West Sussex. An area of 61.3 hectares (151 acres) is also a Local Nature Reserve.This is an area of scrub and mature woodland with scattered species-rich chalk grassland. Yew is dominant over much of the woods but in some parts there is a high proportion of beech. According to Natural England there is an "outstanding diversity of beetles" and butterflies include the white admiral and the uncommon silver-washed fritillary.
