Hemsby

Hemsby railway station was a station in Hemsby, Norfolk. It was on the line between Melton Constable and Great Yarmouth. It was closed in 1959.

Winterton Lighthouse is located in Winterton-on-Sea in the English county of Norfolk. In 1845 Winterton Ness was described as being 'well known to the mariner as the most fatal headland between Scotland and London'. As well as marking the headland, the lighthouse was intended to help guide vessels into the Cockle Gat, which provided the northern entry into the safe water of Yarmouth Roads. The lighthouse was known to Daniel Defoe and is mentioned in his novel Robinson Crusoe.A lighthouse is known to have stood in this location since the early 17th century; it was initially lit by a coal-burning brazier. Since then it has been rebuilt on a number of occasions. For well over a century there were three smaller lighthouses in the immediate vicinity in addition to the main 'fire light', all of which were concurrently operational. The present lighthouse dates from the mid-1860s; it was decommissioned in 1921.

Winterton-on-Sea is a village and civil parish on the North Sea coast of the English county of Norfolk. It is 8 miles (13 km) north of Great Yarmouth and 19 miles (31 km) east of Norwich.The civil parish has an area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2) and at the 2001 census had a population of 1,359 in 589 households. Winterton-on-Sea borders the villages of Hemsby, Horsey and Somerton. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of Great Yarmouth. Between the village and the North Sea are Winterton Dunes which include a 109 hectares (270 acres) National Nature Reserve and are inhabited by several notable species such as the natterjack toad. Winterton and neighbouring beach, Horsey, are major wildlife sites, even over the winter. During the months of November to January, a colony of Atlantic Grey Seals heads on to the beach to give birth to seal pups. This has been described as "one of Britain’s greatest wildlife spectacles" and attracts tourists from all over the country.

Duncan Hall School was a boys’ prep school at Scratby Hall in Ormesby St Margaret with Scratby, Norfolk from 1949 to 1986, with girls admitted from 1979. Prior to occupying Scratby Hall, it was located in Great Yarmouth and was called Duncan House.

Hall Farm Fen, Hemsby is a 9.2-hectare (23-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Hemsby in Norfolk. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.This area of unimproved fen grassland and dykes is grazed by horses and cattle. It has diverse flora, including many orchids. The dykes have well developed aquatic plants and a rich variety of invertebrates, including the nationally rare freshwater snail Segmentina nitida.There is public access from a footpath through the site.

Ormesby St Margaret with Scratby is a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is made up of the inland village of Ormesby St Margaret and the adjacent seaside resorts of Scratby and California. The villages are some 1.2 mi (1.9 km) apart, and they are situated about 6.2 mi (10.0 km) north of the town of Great Yarmouth and 19 mi (31 km) east of the city of Norwich.The civil parish has an area of 4.5 mi (7.2 km) and in the 2001 census had a population of 4,021 in 1,680 households, the population reducing to 3,974 at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of Great Yarmouth.Ormesby St Margaret is separate from the village of Ormesby St Michael, which lies some 2 mi (3.2 km) to the west. Great Ormesby railway station was once located here on the line between Great Yarmouth and Melton Constable. It is now closed. California owes its name to the discovery of some 16th-century gold coins on the beach in 1848, at a time when the California gold rush had captured the attention of the world. The 1940s Home front museum Blitz and Pieces is based in the parish.

Great Ormesby railway station was a station in Ormesby St Margaret, Norfolk. It was opened in 1877 and later became part of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway route bringing holiday passengers from the Midlands to the Norfolk coastal resorts. It was closed in 1959 along with the rest of the line.

Blitz and Pieces is a museum in Scratby in Great Yarmouth, England, owned and operated by Darren Stride. Based on the British Home Front during World War II and the BBC comedy Dad's Army, the museum is housed in a 1940s prefabricated building, a 1930s wooden military hut and a variety of large sheds. In 2014 the museum was a finalist in Channel 4's George Clarke's Amazing Spaces: Shed of the Year series. The museum is open to the public by appointment.

Blood Hill is a wind farm near Hemsby in Norfolk, England. It is the smallest windfarm owned by E.ON; taking up 3 hectares. It has a nameplate capacity of 2.25MW which is enough to power 1000 homes at peak. There were 10 Vestas V27-225 kW turbines which were 30 metres tall and stand on top of Blood Hill. They are visible from the villages of Hemsby and Winterton-on-Sea. Blood Hill began operating in December 1992 and was one of the first windfarms in the United Kingdom. In 2000 a much larger 65m 1.5MW Ecotricity turbine was built adjacent to the site.In 2015 a repowering of the site saw the original 10 turbines replaced with 2 two Turbowind T400 wind turbines.

Winterton Dunes is an extensive dune system on the east coast of Norfolk, England, which has been designated as a National Nature Reserve of 109 ha. Winterton Dunes is within the Norfolk Coast AONB. The site is unusual in that it shows greater ecological similarities to the dune systems of the Baltic - which support acidic plant communities - rather than the dunes on the North Norfolk Coast - where the sand is calcareous. The site supports well developed areas of dune heath, wet 'slacks' between dunes and dune grassland which grades into grazing marsh and birch woodland.

Scratby Halt was a railway station on the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway which served the Norfolk village of Scratby, England.

Somerton is a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It comprises the twin villages of East Somerton and West Somerton and is situated some 14 km (8.7 mi) north of the town of Great Yarmouth, 35 km (22 mi) north-east of the city of Norwich, and 2 km (1.2 mi) from the sea.The civil parish has an area of 8.25 km2 (3.19 sq mi) and in the 2001 census, had a population of 257 in 93 households, the population increasing to 289 at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of Great Yarmouth.The church of West Somerton St Mary is one of 124 existing round-tower churches in Norfolk.
