Smithills School is a mixed secondary school located in Smithills, Bolton, Greater Manchester.Previously a community school administered by Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council, Smithills School converted to academy status on 1 January 2014. However the school continues to coordinate with Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council for admissions. Smithills School offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils. This school was used in the filming of the first series of 4 o'clock club, and was known as Elmsbury High in the TV show

Smithills is a mainly residential suburb of Bolton in Greater Manchester, England. It is 3.1 miles (5 km) northwest of Bolton, 14.5 miles (23 km) south of Blackburn and 11.9 miles (19 km) northwest of Manchester. Smithills lies on the lower south facing slopes of the West Pennine Moors.

Dean Brook is a river in Smithills, Bolton, Greater Manchester, historically within Lancashire. Dean Brook rises on Smithills Moor and flows in a south-easterly direction, through a deep valley called High Shores Clough. It collects Dakin's Brook at Barrow Bridge and then runs through Smithills before meeting Raveden Brook to form Astley Brook, which subsequently joins Eagley Brook and forms the River Tonge. The Dean Brook in Smithills, Bolton, should not be confused with a different Dean Brook, which rises on the north-facing slopes of Rivington Moor, flows in a westerly direction just north of Rivington, Lancashire, and empties into Upper Rivington Reservoir. It should also not be confused with Deane Church Brook, also known as the Kirk Brook, which flows through Deane Church Clough in the west of Bolton.

Moss Bank Park is a 34.25 hectares (84.6 acres) park in Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. It consists of open space, woodland, gardens and other facilities. Moss Bank Park has been awarded the Green Flag Standard in 2008 and 2009. The Green Flag Scheme is a national standard for public parks and green spaces that aims to raise standards across the UK. This award puts Moss Bank Park alongside Brighton Pier, London Zoo, Alton Towers and the Norfolk Broads.Moss Bank Park formerly contained a small zoo and tropical butterfly house. The aviary is home to a historic tower that was originally built as an astronomical observatory by John Horrocks Ainsworth (d. 1864).

Horrocks Fold is a hamlet in Bolton, Lancashire, England. It is 4 miles (6 km) northwest of Bolton town centre and 2.5 miles (4 km) southeast of Belmont. Horrocks Fold lies on the southern slopes of the West Pennine Moors. Originally a farm and collection of barns and outbuildings, the site was converted to private residences in the early 1980s. Historically a part of Lancashire, Horrocks Fold is located up an unadopted lane off Belmont Road (A675). Several paths, tracks and nature trails lead to Horrocks Fold Wood, Scout Road, Smithills Hall and Barrow Bridge. It was once home to former Nottingham Forest player, John McGovern when he managed Bolton Wanderers. It should not be confused with the Horrocks Fold in nearby Edgworth, which is also in Lancashire.

Barrow Bridge is a model village in the north-west outskirts of Bolton in Greater Manchester, England. It was created in the Industrial Revolution but since the demolition of the mills is now a residential village.

Halliwell is predominantly a residential area of Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. It gives its name to an electoral ward of the wider Metropolitan Borough of Bolton. The population of this ward taken at the 2011 census was 13,929. Halliwell lies about 2 miles (3.2 km) to the north west of Bolton town centre and is bounded by Tonge Moor to the east and Heaton to the south west. Smithills Hall to the north is within the ancient township. It lies on the lower south facing slopes of the West Pennine Moors. Historically a part of Lancashire, Halliwell once formed an autonomous township in the ancient parish of Deane. Traces of this ancient history still remain. Boundary Street marks the old boundary between Halliwell and the parish of Bolton le Moors, and a modern wall along Gladstone Street also marks this former boundary. The old building on Halliwell Road, much modernised, at the end of the wall, is the former toll house. Halliwell derives its name from the holy well, an ancient spring which used to exist at the northern end of the township off Smithills Croft Road. In Old English it was recorded as halig wella (i.e. holy well). Over the centuries the name has been spelled as Haliwalle (1220), Haliwell (1243), Harywal (1273), and Halewell (1277–8). In Deane Parish Church registers it was spelled Halliwoe and Hollowell.The parish church of St Peter's was consecrated in 1840.Halliwell had a football team, Halliwell F.C., who were one of the strongest teams in the area. They played at a ground known as Holy Harbour which is now buried under modern housing between Arnold Street, Hughes Street and Cloister Street. The houses are social housing and the landlord is Irwell Valley, they were built in 1998 / 1998. The two new builds on the Holy Harbour land are known as Rusheylea Close and Newlea Close.

St Thomas' Church is in Eskrick Street, Halliwell, a residential area of Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Bolton, the archdeaconry of Bolton, and the diocese of Manchester. Its benefice is united with those of five other local churches to form the Benefice of West Bolton. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.

Bolton Steam Museum is a museum in Bolton, Greater Manchester, England, which houses a variety of preserved steam engines. Based in the cotton store of the former Atlas Mill in Mornington Road, it is owned and run by the Northern Mill Engine Society (NMES).

Doffcocker is a mostly residential district of Bolton, Greater Manchester, lying about 3½ miles from the town centre on the northwest edge of the suburbs on the lower south facing slopes of the West Pennine Moors. Historically within Lancashire, it is bounded by Markland Hill and Heaton to the south and Halliwell to the east.Coal was mined at Doffcocker Colliery in the 19th century from the thin Mountain Mine (seam) of the lower coal measures.Its most prominent feature is Doffcocker Lodge, a former mill lodge (created in 1874) and now a local nature reserve for wildfowl.The history of the name is not certain but it is believed to be formed from the Celtic dubh meaning dark or black, and cocr meaning a winding stream, giving "dark winding stream", the stream that fed Doffcocker Lodge. Another version is that it was named after a Scotsman who was passing through the area and had to cross the stream. Its waters were exceptionally high following heavy rain, so to keep his stockings (cockers, as they were known in Scotland) dry the man was obliged to "doff" them. A similar version appears in an old book COCKERS, or COGGERS, properly half-boots made of untanned leather, or other stiff materials, and strapped under the shoe; but old stockings without feet, used as gaiters by hedgers and ploughmen, are often so called. Cockers occurs in Bishop Hall's Satires. In Lancashire the word is often used for stockings. There is a small place not far from Bolton, called Doff-Cocker, where, my friend, Mr. Turner, informs me, it used to be the fashion for the country people who came from church or market to pull off their stockings and walk barefoot home.
