Chez Panisse is a Berkeley, California, restaurant, known as one of the originators of the style of cooking known as California cuisine, and the farm-to-table movement. The restaurant emphasizes ingredients rather than technique and has developed a supply network of direct relationships with local farmers, ranchers and dairies. The main, downstairs restaurant serves a set menu that changes daily and reflects the season's produce. Prices vary with the day of the week, and as of 2020 range from $75 to $125. An upstairs cafe offers an a la carte menu at lower prices.

The Gourmet Ghetto was a colloquial name for the business district of the North Berkeley neighborhood in the city of Berkeley, California, known as the birthplace of California cuisine. Other developments that can be traced to this neighborhood include specialty coffee, the farm-to-table and local food movements, the rise to popularity in the U.S. of chocolate truffles and baguettes, the popularization of the premium restaurant designed around an open kitchen, and the California pizza made with local produce. After coalescing in the mid-1970s as a culinary destination, the neighborhood received its "Gourmet Ghetto" nickname in the late 1970s from comedian Darryl Henriques. Early, founding influences were Peet's Coffee, Chez Panisse and the Cheese Board Collective. Alice Medrich began her chain of Cocolat chocolate stores there. The neighborhood, anchored by Alice Waters' Chez Panisse, became the center of farm-to-table food sourcing, using selected locally grown produce, especially naturally and sustainably grown—preferably organic—ingredients. Waters and a loosely organized left-leaning coterie of friends and colleagues actively promoted the idea of socially conscious eating. Many former staff at Chez Panisse have gone on to start their own restaurants, bakeries, and food shops in the wider San Francisco Bay Area.

Garfield Intermediate School, also for sometime the Garfield Junior High School, now the Berkeley Jewish Community Center, East Bay is a historical building in Berkeley, California. The Garfield Intermediate School was built in 1915. The one-story Garfield Intermediate School building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 14, 1982. The Garfield Intermediate School was designed by architect Ernest Coxhead in a Mission Revival architecture. The City of Berkeley built five schools in 1915, Garfield Intermediate School was one of the five. The school has enclosed class room courtyards, a 400-seat auditorium, french windows. Due to the courtyards and large french window, thee school was called a California outdoor school.

The Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology (DSPT) is a Catholic graduate school in Berkeley, California. it is a member of the interfaith Graduate Theological Union (GTU) and an affiliate of the University of California Berkeley. DSPT is sponsored by the Dominican Order. DSPT offers certificate and degree programs to women and men of all religions as well as training for the Dominicans of the Western Province. DSPT is the only graduate level theological institution in the United States to offer a concurrent degree, two master degrees with one thesis in philosophy and theology.

Loring House is a historical commercial building, built in 1914 in Berkeley, California, U.S.. The building and it site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 13, 1989; and is a Berkeley Landmark since October 16, 1989. It is also called the William Lovering Locke House, and the Ernest L. Loring House.

North Berkeley is a neighborhood of Berkeley, California. It is situated north of downtown, spanning from Hearst Avenue to Eunice Street, and touches the northwest corner of the UC Berkeley campus.North Berkeley's primary business district is known as the Gourmet Ghetto. The North Berkeley BART station is located just outside the far western edge of the neighborhood; the Downtown Berkeley BART station is closer to the Gourmet Ghetto. North Berkeley is sometimes defined to include the Northbrae and Thousand Oaks neighborhoods; however, all three areas are distinct local neighborhoods.

The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is a nonprofit scientific research institute founded by Nobel laureate and CRISPR gene editing pioneer Jennifer Doudna and biophysicist Jonathan Weissman. The institute is based at the University of California, Berkeley, and also has member researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, UC Davis, UCLA, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Gladstone Institutes, and other collaborating research institutions. The IGI focuses on developing real-world applications of genome editing to address problems in human health, agriculture and climate change.In addition to Doudna, current IGI directors and investigators include Jillian Banfield, who first introduced Doudna to CRISPR systems in bacteria in 2006, Fyodor Urnov, who coined the term "genome editing" with colleagues in 2005, as well as Alex Marson, Brian Staskawicz, and Pamela Ronald. The current executive director is Bradley Ringeisen, former director of the Biological Technologies Office at DARPA, who joined the IGI in 2020.

The University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health, commonly called Berkeley Public Health, is one of 14 schools and colleges at the University of California, Berkeley. The School of Public Health is consistently rated alongside the best in the nation, with recent rankings placing its doctoral programs in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Environmental Health Sciences, and Health Policy among the top in their fields, The school is ranked 8th in the country by US News & World Report. Established in 1943, it was the first school of public health west of the Mississippi River. The school is currently accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health.

Mechanics Building, also known as Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Building, was a historic building on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley in Berkeley, California. Over the years, this brick academic structure was known by various names, reflecting the evolving focus and development of engineering disciplines. The Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Building was demolished in 1965 to provide space for the Davis Hall and the Bechtel Engineering Center.
