Bishops Square

The Old Artillery Ground is an area of land in Spitalfields, London formerly designated one of the Liberties of the Tower of London and Crown Land. Originally the outer precinct of the Priory and Hospital of St Mary Spital, it was converted to an Artillery Ground in 1538, under Henry VIII, for the use of 'The Fraternity or Guild of Artillery of Longbows, Crossbows and Handguns', also known as 'The Fraternity of St George'. This group were later known as the Honourable Artillery Company and used the ground in conjunction with the Gunners of the Tower. In 1658 the Honourable Artillery Company moved to a new Artillery Ground in Bunhill Fields, leaving the Gunners of the Tower in possession of the area until 1682, when it was sold off to speculative builders. These latter developed the area for housing, designating the streets with their present names of Fort Street, Gun Street, Artillery Passage and Artillery Lane which recall its former use. In 1900 it and the neighbouring Liberty of Norton Folgate were merged into the new Metropolitan Borough of Stepney. Since 1965 the area has been administered by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Raven Row is a free art exhibition centre in Spitalfields. It was constructed from numbers 56 and 58, Artillery Lane. These properties were built about 1690. The area was formerly used for testing artillery and this portion of the lane was known as Raven Row until 1895. No. 56 and 58 had been rebuilt in the 1750s for use by Huguenot silk weavers and traders. The buildings were converted into a gallery in 2009 by 6a architects on behalf of Alex Sainsbury, who established a charity to run it. The inaugural exhibition was of work by New York artist Ray Johnson. Raven Row has held exhibitions by K.P. Brehmer, Iain Baxter, Adam Chodzko, Suzanne Treister, Peter Kennard, Hilary Lloyd, Harun Farocki, Eduardo Paolozzi, Stephen Willats and Yvonne Rainer. Other exhibitions have been curated by Richard Grayson, Lars Bang Larsen and Alice Motard.Raven Row suspended its exhibition programming in 2017, with the intention to resume it in 2020 (subsequently delayed to 2021). In the interim, the Artillery Lane building was used by non-profit groups and organisations including the gallery Piper Keys, Asia-Art-Activism Research Network, London Renters Union, and East London Cable.

Sandy's Row Synagogue is a historic Grade II listed synagogue and former Christian church in the East End of London. Built by refugee French Huguenots in 1766, it was later converted into a Baptist chapel and in 1867 was acquired by a Jewish congregation. It is the oldest surviving Ashkenazi synagogue in London.

Spitalfields Market is a traders' market as well as a food and art market located in Spitalfields, Central London. Traders began operating around 1666, after the Great Fire of London, where the market stands today. The Spitalfields regeneration programme that ended in 2005, resulted in two new public spaces – Bishops Square and Crispin Place, which restored several historic streets and resulted in more independent retailers and restaurants. Spitalfields Market is situated in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is surrounded by Lamb Street, Old Spitalfields market, Brushfield Street and Bishops Square.

Dennis Severs' House in Folgate Street, London is a "still-life drama" created by Dennis Severs, who owned and lived in it until his death, as a "historical imagination" of what life would have been like inside for a family of Huguenot silk weavers. It is a Grade II listed Georgian terraced house in Spitalfields in the East End, Central London, England. From 1979 to 1999 it was lived in by Dennis Severs, who gradually recreated the rooms as a time capsule in the style of former centuries. Severs' friend Dan Cruickshank said: "It was never meant to be an accurate historical creation of a specific moment – it was an evocation of a world. It was essentially a theatre set."After closing due to the Covid pandemic, the house reopened to the public on 29 July 2021. A large trove of audio tapes that were found have been condensed to create a new Dennis Severs' Tour, conducted by an actor. The house's Latin motto is Aut Visum Aut Non!: "You either see it or you don't."

Bishopsgate Library is an independent, charity-funded library located within the Bishopsgate Institute in the City of London.

The Museum of Transology (MoT) is a collection of objects and community archive representing the lives of transgender, non-binary and intersex people, curated by its founder E-J Scott. It is one of the first known collections of transgender artifacts, and as of 2019, it was the world’s largest collection of material culture relating to transgender lives. It has appeared in exhibitions and holdings at the London College of Fashion, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, the Bishopsgate Institute, the Whitechapel Gallery, and the Barbican Centre.

Bishopsgate Institute is a cultural institute in the Bishopsgate Without area of the City of London, located near Liverpool Street station and Spitalfields market. The institute was established in 1895. It offers a cultural events programme, courses for adults, historic library and archive collections and community programme.

Norton Folgate is a short length of street in London, connecting Bishopsgate with Shoreditch High Street, on the northern edge of the City of London. It constitutes a short section of the A10 road, the former Roman Ermine Street. Its name is a reminder of the tiny ancient Liberty of Norton Folgate situated in and around the area.The nearest London Underground station is Liverpool Street, also a National Rail mainline railway station. The nearest London Overground station is Shoreditch High Street. It lends its name to a character played by Samuel Barnett in the ongoing Big Finish Productions Torchwood audio drama series. In July 2015, more than 500 people protested against the demolition of the old buildings in historic Norton Folgate neighbourhood to make way for new developments. People travelled from across the country to ask for the restoration of the old structures rather than offering them to the international property investment market.

Norton Folgate was a liberty in Middlesex, England; adjacent to the City of London in what would become the East End of London. It was located between the Bishopsgate ward of the City of London to the south, the parish of St Leonard, Shoreditch to the north and the parish of Spitalfields to the east. The district, which was a component of the Tower Division, also known as the Tower Hamlets, ceased to exist when it merged into the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney in 1900. Following boundary changes in the 1990s, its former area is now divided between the City of London and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Chapter Spitalfields, originally known as Nido Spitalfields, is a student accommodation building located at 100 Middlesex Street in Spitalfields, Central London. It is the third tallest student dormitory in the world, behind the Sky Plaza in Leeds, and 17 New Wakefield Street in Manchester. The 34-storey tower falls within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, though Middlesex Street forms the boundary with the City of London, the principal financial district of the world. Middlesex Street forms part of the Petticoat Lane Market area. Prior to construction of Nido, the plot at 100 Middlesex Street was occupied by a 1960-built office building, Rodwell House, which comprised an 8-storey block oriented north-south, surrounded by a single-storey office podium. In 2015, Nido Spitalfields was purchased by Greystar Real Estate Partners, parent company of the student accommodation company, Chapter. Other Chapter buildings in London are located in the King's Cross area and Portobello.The tower appears in the Doctor Who episode "The Wedding of River Song".

Old Spitalfields Market is a covered market in Spitalfields, London. There has been a market on the site for over 350 years. In 1991 it gave its name to New Spitalfields Market in Leyton, where fruit and vegetables are now traded. In 2005, a regeneration programme resulted in the new public spaces: Bishops Square and Crispin Place, which are now part of the modern Spitalfields Market.
