Whitby Lighthouse

All Saints' Church is the parish church of Hawsker, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The first chapel in Hawsker was built in the Anglo-Saxon period, from which a cross-shaft survives. A new chapel, dedicated to All Saints, was built by Aschetin de Hawsker in the 1140s. It survived into the 16th century, but no trace of it now remains. The current church was built between 1876 and 1877, to a design by E. H. Smales. Originally in the parish of St Mary's Church, Whitby, it was given its own parish in 1878. The church was grade II listed in 1989. The church is in sandstone and has slate roofs with red ridge tiles. It consists of a nave, a south porch, a central tower, and a chancel with a north organ chamber and vestry. The tower has buttresses, a gabled staircase turret, lancet bell openings, and a steeply hipped roof with finials and a cross. The porch is gabled and timber framed, and the doorway has an ogee-arched head and a tympanum containing the date. Inside, there are several stained glass windows, various wall monuments, two original brass candelabra.

Saltwick Bay is a north-east facing bay approximately one mile (1.6 km) to the east of Whitby, on the east coast of North Yorkshire, England. The bay contains the Saltwick Nab alum quarries, listed under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. The bay is part of the Saltwick Formation and known for its collections of fossils. The SS Rohilla hospital ship sank in the bay in 1914, and the fishing trawler Admiral Van Tromp was shipwrecked there in 1976. The bay is accessible through Whitby Holiday Park.

Hawsker was a railway station on the Scarborough & Whitby Railway. It opened on 16 July 1885, and served the villages of High Hawsker, Low Hawsker and Stainsacre. Hawsker was a small intermediate stop and its ticket sales reflected this; it sold only 8,982 tickets in 1922. The Scarborough & Whitby railway was a victim of the Beeching cuts and all freight traffic to Hawsker was curtailed by 10 August 1964 and the station closed to passengers on 8 March 1965. The track from Whitby was left in situ until 1973 pending potash traffic which never materialised. The road overbridge immediately south of the station was removed in the 1990s and replaced with a dual pelican crossing. The station is now (2007) the headquarters of Trailways Cycle Hire and has old railway carriages used as accommodation on site. In the 2010s a brick wing (in a style similar to the rest of the building) was added to the station house's southeast side.

Hawsker is the name for the combined villages of High and Low Hawsker that straddle the A171 road 2.5 miles (4 km) southeast of Whitby, in North Yorkshire, England.

Stainsacre is a village in the civil parish of Hawsker-cum-Stainsacre in North Yorkshire on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. It lies 2 miles (3.2 km) south-east of Whitby, near the A171 road. The village's population in 1809 was 144. Stainsacre was the seat of Jonathan Sanders, a merchant. By 1884, W.H. Attley lived in Stainsacre Hall. Stainsacre Hall was owned by Middlesbrough Borough Council and they used it as an educational and activity centre until 2010, before it was sold due to cost and dwindling numbers attending. Hawsker railway station served Stainsacre until it closed in 1965. The Parish Church is dedicated to All Saints.

Hawsker-cum-Stainsacre is a civil parish in the former Scarborough district of North Yorkshire, England. The population of the parish was listed as being 710 at the 2021 Census.

Eskdale School was a coeducational secondary school located in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. The school is named after Eskdale, a valley that runs from Whitby to Westerdale. It was a community school administered by North Yorkshire Council. From September 2017 it became an 11 to 16 school. This has increased the capacity of the school from September 2018. In February 2019 Eskdale School agreed to federate with nearby Caedmon College. The school also had an astroturf pitch which is still used by the local community. In January 2023 plans were suggested – to close the school, and amalgamate with nearby Caedmon College. This moved forward in summer 2023 after consultation – and was decided from September 2024 the school would close and is set to become Whitby School and Sixth Form (with Caedmon College). Eskdale closed on Friday 19 July 2024.

The Whitby Mudstone is a Toarcian (Early Jurassic; Falciferum-Bifrons in regional chronostratigraphy) geological formation in Yorkshire and Worcestershire, England. The formation, part of the Lias Group, is present in the Cleveland and Worcester Basins and the East Midlands Shelf.

Whitby Abbey was a 7th-century Christian monastery that later became a Benedictine abbey. The abbey church was situated overlooking the North Sea on the East Cliff above Whitby in North Yorkshire, England, a centre of the medieval Northumbrian kingdom. The abbey and its possessions were confiscated by the crown under Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries between 1536 and 1545. Since that time, the ruins of the abbey have continued to be used by sailors as a landmark at the headland. Since the 20th century, the substantial ruins of the church have been declared a Grade I Listed building and are in the care of English Heritage. The site museum is housed in Cholmley House, a 17th century banqueting hall repurposed by design studio Stanton Williams in 2002.

Cholmley House or Whitby Hall is a banqueting house sited next to the ruins of Whitby Abbey in North Yorkshire, England. It was built in 1672 by Sir Hugh Cholmeley, whose family had acquired the Abbey ruins and the land around them after its dissolution in 1539 – from then until 1672, the family had lived in what had been the Abbey's gatehouse and guest lodgings. It was originally built with a square forecourt in front of it, now known as the Stone Garden – this contains a replica of the Borghese Gladiator, another replica of which was owned by the builder of the house. In 1743 the family succeeded to the Wentworth estates and moved its main base to Howsham Hall, leaving Cholmley House deserted. The north front lost its roof in a storm in 1790, leading to the demolition of the north front. Only the main hall remained and even this fell into decay before coming into the possession of the Strickland family, who fitted bracing arches in 1866 to secure its walls. These arches were replaced after the Ministry of Works took over the house and abbey ruins in 1936, before it was transferred to the Ministry's successor English Heritage in 1984. The house was repurposed as the museum, shop and visitor reception for the Abbey site by design studio Stanton Williams, and was reopened on 30 March 2002 by David Hope, then Archbishop of York.

Raw is a hamlet in the Borough of Scarborough of North Yorkshire, England, near to the villages of Fylingthorpe, Robin Hood's Bay, and Hawsker. The hamlet is mostly agricultural in nature and it lies 0.5-mile (0.8 km) north-west of Fylingthorpe, 4.5 miles (7.2 km) south-east of Whitby, and due east of the A171 road.

Whitby Cemetery (or Larpool Cemetery) is a burial ground in the town of Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. Previous to the burial ground being open, interments took place in the graveyard around St Mary's Church on the east cliff of the town, by the coastline. The Larpool burial ground was opened in the 1860s, and a report from the early 2020s estimated the ground would run out of space between 2025 and 2027. Efforts to find an extension, or an alternative space, have proved problematic.
