Fox River Grove (FRG) is a village in Algonquin Township, McHenry County and Cuba Township, Lake County, Illinois, United States. As per 2020 census, the population was 4,702. In 1919, the village of Fox River Grove was officially incorporated, becoming the ninth village in McHenry County. The Grove is situated along the southern shore of the Fox River.

The 1995 Fox River Grove bus–train collision was a grade crossing collision that killed seven students riding aboard a school bus in Fox River Grove, Illinois, on the morning of October 25, 1995. The school bus, driven by a substitute driver, was stopped at a traffic light with the rearmost portion extending onto a portion of the railroad tracks when it was struck by a Metra Union Pacific Northwest Line train en route to Chicago.The crash involved a signalled rail crossing located very near a highway intersection which was regulated by traffic signals. The devices were connected and operations were supposed to be carefully timed and coordinated. Such locations are known as "interconnected crossings" within the industries. Highway and railroad officials had each received numerous complaints from the public about the insufficient timing of the warnings provided by the signals in the year prior to the crash, and citizens later told of situations with vehicles unable to clear the tracks in a timely manner. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation found that, while the bus driver was not aware that a portion of the bus was on the tracks as she should have been, the timing of signals was so insufficient that, even if she had identified the hazard as the train approached, she would have had to proceed against a red traffic signal into the highway intersection to have moved out of the train's path. Legislation and re-engineering of interconnected crossings across the state of Illinois combined with greater awareness elsewhere resulted in efforts to help to prevent similar crashes from recurring. Informational decals were also added to Illinois school buses advising drivers of the length of each bus, since the substitute school bus driver was apparently unaware of the exact length of the bus she was driving. Other states have also embraced that and related aspects and incorporated them into their school bus driver training curriculum.The Fox River Grove crash stands as the worst crash involving a Metra train in its history, and one of the worst grade crossing crashes in U.S. history. At the crash site, the improved signaling system installed after the crash now protects the passing trains and motor vehicle traffic. Nearby is a small memorial to the seven high school students killed in the crash.

Fox River Grove is a commuter railroad station along Metra's Union Pacific Northwest Line in Fox River Grove, Illinois. It is located at 4015 North Northwest Highway (US 14) and Lincoln Avenue, and lies 37.3 miles (60.0 km) from Ogilvie Transportation Center in Chicago, and 25.8 miles (41.5 km) from Harvard. In Metra's zone-based fare system, Fox River Grove is in zone H. As of 2018, Fox River Grove is the 104th busiest of the 236 non-downtown stations in the Metra system, with an average of 462 weekday boardings.As of May 30, 2023, Fox River Grove is served by 52 trains (27 inbound, 25 outbound) on weekdays, by 30 trains (15 in each direction) on Saturdays, and by 20 trains (nine inbound, all 11 outbound) on Sundays. The station house is an unmanned modestly decorative shelter that is open 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Parking is available on both sides of the tracks and on both sides of Lincoln Avenue. On the north side, there are small on-side parking lots between the tracks and the south side of North Northwest Highway. On the south side, much larger parking lots exist on Lincoln Avenue. The southeast parking lot is also accessible to Algonquin Road. The station underwent a complete rebuild, that extended platforms to 640 ft, (enough for an 8-car train), 2 new passenger shelters, bathroom facilities, repaved parking lot and improved lighting. The total price was $3.5 million, of which $1.2 million came from Union Pacific. The project was completed in the fall of 2013.

The Grigsby Estate is a historic estate and hobby farm at 125 Buckley Road in Barrington Hills, Illinois. The house was built in 1930 for Bertram James Grigsby, an electrical engineer and president of a radio manufacturing company, and his wife Elsie. Architecture firm Rowe, Dillard and Rowe designed the estate's Tudor Revival manor house for the couple, a style which reflected the couple's time in England; Elsie was born there, while Bertram worked there for several years. The house's design features an asymmetrical form, half-timbering, decorative brickwork, and several brick chimneys. The estate also includes a guest house, a garage, a greenhouse, a farmhouse, a barn, a milkhouse, a firefighting shed, and a machinery shed. The estate was typical of early development in the Barrington Hills area, which mainly consisted of estates and hobby farms that were often inspired by English country life.The estate was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 12, 1987.

The Louis Fredrick House is a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright at 19 W. County Line Road in Barrington, Illinois. The house was built in 1957 for Louis Fredrick, an affluent interior designer. The house's design is typical of Wright's later work, in which he adapted his Usonian design principles to larger homes for wealthier clients. Fredrick played a role in the design process as well, rejecting Wright's original plan on account of its concrete block walls and providing input on decisions such as coloring. The house's design includes a brick exterior, long horizontal window bands, a low roof covered with cedar shakes, and a large chimney.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 12, 2016.Also in 2016 the house was sold through auction to David and Joyce McArdle. The McArdles had previously owned and restored another Frank Lloyd Wright building, the F.B. Henderson House in Elmhurst, Illinois. After acquiring the home, the couple approached John Eifler, of Eifler & Associates, to restore the home, which included adding geothermal heating and cooling, and the construction of furniture that had originally been intended for the home. This restoration was complete by 2018.

The George E. Van Hagen House is a historic house at 12 W. County Line Road in Barrington Hills, Illinois. The house was built circa 1912 for George Ely Van Hagen, the president of the Standard Forgings Company, and his wife Mary Wakefield Lewis Van Hagen, the granddaughter of President William Henry Harrison. Large country estates in rural suburbs such as Barrington Hills were popular with the wealthy in the early twentieth century; Van Hagen used his house's grounds for a gentleman's farm and fox hunting, typical pastimes of estate owners. Architect John Nyden gave the house an Arts and Crafts style design with Federal Revival elements. The house's design uses the simple geometric forms typical of Arts and Crafts designs throughout, with plain cylindrical columns, diamond and rectangular patterned panels, and semicircular arches atop the entrance and several windows. The Federal Revival elements are largely confined to the interior and include a plasterwork dining room ceiling, a mosaic fireplace surround, and cabinets inspired by Palladian windows.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 12, 2016.

Barrington Hills is a village located about 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Chicago in the U.S. state of Illinois. Per the 2020 census, the population was 4,114. It straddles approximately 29 square miles (75 km2) over four counties, Cook, Kane, Lake, and McHenry. The Village of Barrington Hills was incorporated in 1957. The suburban village is included in the greater Barrington area. Many very affluent residents live on large estates and commute to downtown Chicago. A minimum 5-acre (2.0 ha) zoning restriction has been in effect on new construction since 1963, but the existence of equestrian farms antedates the village by decades. Farming and horse raising are allowed. Barrington Hills includes farms and estates such as Hill 'N Dale Farms, owned by Richard L. Duchossois, former owner of the Arlington Park racetrack, and the Bank Note Farm. The identification of the area with horses carries over to the names Broncos and Colts for school teams.

Cary is a station on Metra's Union Pacific Northwest Line in Cary, Illinois. The station is located at 100 W. Main St. near Northwest Highway (US 14). Cary is 38.3 miles (61.6 km) from Ogilvie Transportation Center, the southern terminus of the Union Pacific Northwest Line. In Metra's zone-based fare structure, Cary is located in zone H. As of 2018, Cary is the 58th busiest of the 236 non-downtown stations in the Metra system, with an average of 883 weekday boardings. The station consists of two side platforms which serve two tracks. A station house where tickets may be purchased is on the inbound platform. The station house was on the outbound side until 2021, when it was demolished in favor of the new building. Parking is available. As of May 30, 2023, Cary is served by 52 trains (27 inbound, 25 outbound) on weekdays, by 30 trains (15 in each direction) on Saturdays, and by 20 trains (nine inbound, all 11 outbound) on Sundays.

Trout Valley is a village in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. It was incorporated as a village on 19 March 1996. Per the 2020 census, the population was 515.

Cary is a village located in Algonquin Township, McHenry County, Illinois, and Cuba Township, Lake County, Illinois, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 17,826.

Cary-Grove High School is a high school in Cary, Illinois, a northwest suburb of Chicago, USA; it is part of Community High School District 155. In 1995, it was the subject of much media attention after the Fox River Grove level crossing accident that killed seven students. In 2006, on the anniversary of the accident, another Cary-Grove student, Justin Glassmyer, was killed at the same crossing.Located approximately 38 miles northwest of Chicago, the school serves students from Cary, Fox River Grove, the far east side of Crystal Lake, and areas of Barrington, Trout Valley and Oakwood Hills.
