Spring Garden School

Poplar is a neighborhood in Lower North Philadelphia. It is located north of Callowhill, between Spring Garden/Fairmount and Northern Liberties, bounded roughly by Girard Avenue to the north, North Broad Street to the west, Spring Garden Street to the south, and 5th Street to the east. The neighborhood is mostly residential with commercial frontage on Broad Street and Girard Avenue and some industrial facilities to the west of the railroad tracks along Percy St. and 9th St.

Spring Garden School No. 1 is a historic school building located in the Poplar neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was designed by Irwin T. Catharine and built in 1927–1928. It is a three-story, three bay brick building in the Moderne-style. It features a limestone entrance surround, a limestone parapet, and decorative tile.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. By 2013 the building had been abandoned. As of 2016 the building had old textbooks and graffiti inside. Around that period there was a plan to convert the buildings into apartments for disadvantaged elderly people.Around 2017, the school building reopened as affordable housing for veterans.

Spring Garden station is an abandoned subway rapid transit station on the SEPTA Broad–Ridge Spur, located under Ridge Avenue between Spring Garden Street and Buttonwood Street. The Broad-Ridge Spur, including Spring Garden station, opened on December 21, 1932. By the late 1980s, Spring Garden station was lightly used and exit-only; it was frequently occupied by drug users and dealers. After no substantial opposition from nearby residents, SEPTA closed the station on September 10, 1989. The now abandoned station, visible from passing trains, is heavily graffitied. A single entrance, covered with steel, is still present on the west side of Ridge Avenue just north of Buttonwood Street.

Parkway Center City Middle College is a historic vocational school located in the Callowhill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is part of the School District of Philadelphia. The building was built in 1925–1927 and is a brick building in the Academic Gothic-style. Prior to its current status Parkway Center City Middle College was known as Parkway Center City and was located at 1118 Market Street. The school served as a division of the former Parkway Program, a school without walls program. Also, this building was the former Stoddart-Fleischer Junior High School and later Middle School until it closed in June 2003. Parkway Center City Middle College is the first high school in Pennsylvania to present intellectuals with the possibility of finishing high school with a high school diploma and an associate degree. Working in partnership with the Community College of Philadelphia, our students are given unparalleled access to dual enrollment classes, with a maximum of 61 college credits available to some scholars throughout their high school careers. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 as the Helen Fleischer Vocational School.

Philadelphia Wholesale Drug Company Building is a historic warehouse building located in the Callowhill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1927, and is a seven-story, seven bay by five bay, reinforced concrete building with brick and cast stone facing. It measures approximately 190 feet by 112 feet. It was built by the Philadelphia Wholesale Drug Company Building, one of the first druggist cooperatives in the United States.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

The Divine Lorraine Hotel, also known as the Lorraine Apartments, stands at the corner of Broad Street and Fairmount Avenue in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Designed by architect Willis G. Hale and built between 1892 and 1894, the building originally functioned as apartments, housing some of Philadelphia's wealthy residents. Lorraine Apartments was one of the most luxurious and best preserved late 19th-century apartment houses in Philadelphia. In 1900 the building became the Lorraine Hotel when the Italian-owned Metropolitan Hotel Company purchased the apartments. Later it would become the first hotel in Philadelphia to be racially integrated under Father Divine. The hotel was abandoned and deteriorated, with graffiti all over the walls, broken windows, and crumbling stone. On September 16, 2015, a massive renovation project began.

Union Transfer is a music venue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Located at 1026 Spring Garden Street in the Callowhill neighborhood, it opened on September 21, 2011, as a joint venture between The Bowery Presents, a New York City production company now owned by AEG Live; and R5 Productions, an independent Philadelphia production company. Its 1889 building retains signage for its original tenant, the Spring Garden Farmer's Market. From 1918 to 1942, the building housed the Union Transfer Baggage Express Co., storing bags and other items for the railway company; later, it housed a tire shop, a trust company, and a Spaghetti Warehouse restaurant. Union Transfer primarily hosts indie rock acts, but also folk, electronic dance music, hip hop and punk. Acts that have played there include Mischief Brew, M83, Diplo, Frank Ocean, The Murder City Devils, Cold War Kids, Jim James, Dinosaur Jr, The Tallest Man on Earth, Best Coast, and Cock Sparrer. Union Transfer carries beer from Yards Brewing Company and other local products. The coat check is named for Japanese Breakfast's Michelle Zauner, who worked there in the 2010s.

The Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art, founded in 1975, located within historic Congregation Rodeph Shalom, is dedicated to exhibiting contemporary art that illuminates the Jewish experience. The museum has organized solo and group exhibitions of work in many mediums by artists of diverse backgrounds. In addition to its special-exhibit gallery, the Museum features a permanent collection of important works by accomplished artists including William Anastasi, Chaim Gross, Tobi Kahn, Joan Snyder, Shelley Spector, Boaz Vaadia and Roman Vishniac. Showcased in the Thalheimer Entrance Foyer of the synagogue on Broad Street is the museum's Leon J. and Julia S. Obermayer Collection of Jewish Ritual Art.

Fairmount station is a subway station in the Francisville section of North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is served by SEPTA's Broad Street Line (as a local stop) and the Broad-Ridge Spur. There are three separate platforms. The Broad-Ridge Spur and Broad Street Line (BSL) northbound platforms connect inside the faregates, but the BSL's southbound platform cannot be reached from the other two without exiting. Such a connection once existed; the sealed-off entrance can be seen at platform level heading south towards the end of the platform. Travelers wishing to switch between the Broad-Ridge Spur and the southbound BSL must connect at Girard. The Broad-Ridge Spur platform is shortened and can only accommodate short 2-car trains; the unused part of the platform is visible from passing trains and is covered in layers of graffiti. Fairmount station on the Broad-Ridge Spur has a full mezzanine concourse extending from Wallace Street to Ridge Avenue, now abandoned.

Congregation Rodeph Shalom of Philadelphia, founded in 1795, is the oldest Ashkenazic synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. It is noted historically for its leadership of the Reform Judaism among American Hebrew congregations, for its spiritual influence upon international Jewry, and for its unique 1927 Moorish Revival building on North Broad Street, on the National Register of Historic Places for many decades.

Thaddeus Stevens School of Observation is a historic school building located in the Poplar neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was designed by Irwin T. Catharine and built in 1926–1927. It is a five-story, brick building on a limestone base and grade-level basement in the Late Gothic Revival-style. It features a projecting entrance bay with Gothic arch opening, round arched openings, and decorative spandrel panels. It was used as an "observation school" for teacher education and training. It is named for Congressman Thaddeus Stevens (1792–1868). The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The school has since closed and been turned into lofts. In 1998 Philadelphia based mural artist Meg Saligman painted the iconic mural "Common Threads," wherein she depicts a humanity shared across time, today's youth paralleled with classical figures. All models for the mural were local high school students.

Spring Garden Street station was a train station in the Poplar neighborhood of Philadelphia. It was built by the Reading Railroad and located on the Reading Viaduct. Service to Spring Garden Street ended in 1984 with the opening of the Center City Commuter Connection, which bypassed the Reading Terminal, and the building was demolished in 2021.
