Barnby Broad and Marshes

North Cove is a 15.5-hectare (38-acre) nature reserve between Beccles and Lowestoft in Suffolk. It is managed by the owner and Beccles Bird Society, is part of the Barnby Broad and Marshes Site of Special Scientific Interest the Broadland Ramsar internationally important wetland site, the Broadland Special Protection Area under the European Union Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation. The site has wet woodland, grazing marsh, ponds and dykes. There are birds such as sparrowhawks, woodcocks, redpolls, siskins and the three species of woodpecker. Flora include opposite-leaved golden-saxifrage, bog pimpernel and the nationally scarce marsh fern. There is access from a footpath between Barnby and the Angles Way.

Burgh St Peter is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. Burgh St Peter is located 3.5 miles (5.6 km) north-east of Beccles and 17 miles (27 km) south-east of Norwich.

Castle Marshes is a 71 hectare nature reserve west of Lowestoft in Suffolk. It is managed by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust. It is part of the Barnby Broad and Marshes Site of Special Scientific Interest the Broadland Ramsar internationally important wetland site, the Broadland Special Protection Area under the European Union Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation. The site has fen, freshwater dykes and grazing marshes. Resident wildfowl include wigeons, gadwalls, teals and shovelers are joined in winter by migrants when the marshes are flooded. Scarce chaser and the nationally rare Norfolk hawker dragonflies breed on the site, and there are blue-tailed damselflies. There is no public access but the Angles Way footpath runs along the northern boundary.

Barnby is a village and civil parish in the East Suffolk district of Suffolk, England. The village is 5 miles (8.0 km) west of Lowestoft and 3 miles (4.8 km) east of Beccles in the north of the county. It is effectively merged with the village of North Cove which constitutes a separate parish. At the 2011 United Kingdom census the population of the parish was 479. This had fallen slightly from a mid-2005 estimated population of 510. Other than North Cove, it is bordered by Carlton Colville to the east, Mutford to the south, and to the north the Norfolk parish of Burgh St Peter across the river. The northern border of the parish is marked by the River Waveney and the northern area lies within The Broads National Park. The village lies on the A146 road running between Norwich and Lowestoft. This bypasses the built up area on a series of bends known locally as the "Barnby bends". The Ipswich to Lowestoft railway line runs through the north of the parish, with the nearest stations at Oulton Broad South and Beccles.

North Cove is a village and civil parish in the north of the English county of Suffolk. It is part of the East Suffolk district, located around 3 miles (4.8 km) east of Beccles and 5 miles (8.0 km) west of Lowestoft. It merges with the village of Barnby and the villages share some resources, although the two parishes retain separate parish councils. The parish has an area of 5 square kilometres (1.9 sq mi) and at the 2011 United Kingdom census had a population of 449. This was estimated to have fallen slightly to 424 by 2016. The northern section of the parish is inside the area of the Broads National Park, with the River Waveney forming the parish's northern boundary. The Ipswich to Lowestoft railway line runs through the parish, with the nearest railway stations at Beccles and Oulton Broad. The village is bypassed to the south by the A146 road, with the A145 Beccles to Blythburgh road joining the A146 in the parish. Part of Beccles Airfield is in the extreme south of the parish where it borders Ellough. Worlingham lies to the immediate west, with Mutford and Barnby to the east and the south Norfolk parishes of Burgh St Peter and Aldeby being north of the River Waveney.

Wheatacre is a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It covers an area of 4.38 km2 (1.69 sq mi) and had a population of 112 in 43 households at the 2001 census, increasing to 118 at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, it falls within the district of South Norfolk The villages name means 'Wheat land'. Notable residents include 80’s one-hit wonder Andrew Anthony.

Mutford is a village and civil parish in the East Suffolk District of the English county of Suffolk. The village is 5 miles (8.0 km) south-west of Lowestoft and 4 miles (6.4 km) south-east of Beccles in a rural area. The parish borders Barnby, Carlton Colville, Gisleham, Rushmere, Henstead with Hulver Street, Ellough and North Cove. The village gave its name to the Half Hundred of Mutford which is named in the Domesday Book. The parish had a population of 471 at the 2011 United Kingdom census. The A146 Beccles to Lowestoft road runs to north of the parish, cutting through the north-western corner. The Hundred River marks the southern boundary with Henstead with Hulver Street.

Oulton Dyke is a freshwater stretch of water in the Norfolk Broads, located in Suffolk within the United Kingdom. The dyke connects Oulton Broad near Lowestoft to the River Waveney by means of a confluence near the village of Burgh St Peter. Oulton Dyke is approximately one mile long, and from Oulton Broad heads west then after some 400 yards makes a sharp turn to the north to join with the River Waveney. The name Oulton Dyke however is rarely used, because there are many misconceptions that it is part the River Waveney.

Somerleyton railway station is on the Wherry Lines in the east of England, serving the village of Somerleyton, Suffolk. It is 18 miles (29 km) down the line from Norwich on the route to Lowestoft, and is less than 2 miles (3.2 km) from Somerleyton Hall on foot. Its three-letter station code is SYT.The station is managed by Greater Anglia, which also operates all of the trains that call. In The Rings of Saturn, the author W. G. Sebald describes travelling by train from Norwich and crossing the line to walk to Somerleyton Hall.

Aldeby is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is bounded to the south by the River Waveney, on the other side of which is Suffolk. The village is about five miles (8 km) by road from Beccles.

The East Anglia Transport Museum is an open-air transport museum, with numerous historic public transport vehicles (including many in full working order). It is located in Carlton Colville a suburb of Lowestoft, Suffolk. It is the only museum in the country where visitors can ride on buses, trams and trolleybuses, as well as a narrow-gauge railway.

Sprat's Water and Marshes, Carlton Colville is a 57.1-hectare (141-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest on the western outskirts of Lowestoft in Suffolk, England. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar internationally important wetland site, and Special Protection Area under the European Union Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds, and part of The Broads Special Area of Conservation. The northern part of the site is Carlton Marshes, which is part of Carlton and Oulton Marshes, a nature reserve managed by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust. The site has open water, mixed fen, alder carr and wet grazing marsh on thick peat. The diverse flora include a number of uncommon species, and the site is also important for breeding birds. The Angles Way footpath passes through the site, but some parts are closed to the public.
