Wrekin Terrane

The Wrekin ( REE-kin) is a hill in east Shropshire, England. It is located some five miles (8 km) west of Telford, on the border between the unitary authorities of Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin. Rising above the Shropshire Plain to a height of 407 metres (1,335 feet) above sea level, it is a prominent and well-known landmark, signalling the entrance to Shropshire for travellers westbound on the M54 motorway. The Wrekin is contained within the northern salient of the Shropshire Hills AONB. The hill is popular with walkers and tourists and offers good views of Shropshire. It can be seen well into Staffordshire and the Black Country, and even as far as the Beetham Tower in Manchester, Winter Hill in Lancashire and Cleeve Hill in Gloucestershire.

The Wrekin transmitting station is a telecommunications and broadcasting facility on The Wrekin, a hill in the county of Shropshire, England. It includes a 52 metres (171 ft) tall free-standing lattice tower with transmitting antennas attached at various heights. The DTT transmitting arrays add about another 10m to this. It broadcasts digital television, alongside digital and FM (analogue) radio. The station was first proposed in 1966. As The Wrekin is a local beauty spot, many objections had to be overcome and alternative sites analysed before planning consent was given. The transmitter opened in 1975. The building is semi-underground and the tower stands on its roof.

Uriconian rocks are volcanic rocks found in parts of Shropshire, United Kingdom. The name relates to Uriconio, the Latin name for an Iron Age hillfort on the summit of the Wrekin, a hill formed of Uriconian rock. The Uriconian rocks of Shropshire (Wrekin Terrane) are thought to be potentially related to the Longmyndian Supergroup of the Stretton Hills, Shropshire, United Kingdom. Current geological profiling of the terranes suggests that the Uriconian rocks are of Precambrian age (Neoproterozoic Phases 2 and 3). The Uriconian Rocks outcrop to the southeast of the Long Mynd area of the Welsh Borderland Fault System and beyond the Church Stretton Fault which trends northeast-southwest across the area. The Stretton Hills are composed primarily of arenaceous (quartz rich sand) beds assigned to the Longmyndian Supergroup. The Longmyndian rocks are a c.6 km thick group of volcaniclastic and bentonitic sediment horizons. The Uriconian have long thought to be older than the Longmyndian and generally outcrop to the southeast of the latter within northeast-southwest trending lineaments suggesting basement influence for the regional structure.The Uriconian rocks outcrop in areas from Wellington, Shropshire to Primrose Hill on the southwest side of The Wrekin, east of Caer Caradoc and in the Craven Arms Inlier. Primarily the strata exist as fault-bounded slices within splays of, and to the southeast of, the main Church Stretton fault system. The Uriconian rocks comprise both intermediate to acidic and basic (bimodal) volcanic suites that reflect largely intraplate origins for the complex although some subduction signatures have been identified. Further work has led to suggest that the locality of this kind of volcanism is related to marginal basin volcanicity (behind the main arc) influenced by trans-tension brought about by oblique subduction.The Neoproterozoic sediments were deposited on Avalonia in various strike-slip faulted basins and they comprise predominantly volcaniclastic and siliciclastic sediments.

The Ercall is a small hill in Shropshire, England, between The Wrekin and Wellington. It is an internationally important geological site, part of The Wrekin and The Ercall Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The hill is managed by Shropshire Wildlife Trust and includes 540 million year old ripple beds and ancient pre-Cambrian lava flows in exposed quarries. Quartzite from the neighbouring Wrekin is also visible. The Ercall bears the marks of extensive quarrying, although the quarries are now disused, safe and open to the public. When the M54 motorway was constructed in 1974, the road was built through the northern end of the hill.

Nash was a village in Shropshire, England which is believed to have been wiped out entirely by the Black Death of c.1349. It now no longer exists and is described as a lost settlement, deserted medieval village or abandoned village. The 1349 manorial income for Nash (also referred to as Nesse) indicates that the village was unable to pay any monies "because the inhabitants are dead". Despite this, the village was home to a farmer called Hercules Felton in 1668 and it had three people paying hearth tax by 1672, and a single barn remained by 1839, suggesting that some human life remained in the area. Nash has been completed deserted since at least the mid-19th century and the old site is located in the middle of fields near Wrockwardine, though no road or footpath survives to provide access to the area. A small wood near Drummery Lane marks the location where the foundations of house platforms are speculated to lie but no excavations have ever been conducted on the site of the lost village.

Little Wenlock is a village and civil parish in the Telford and Wrekin borough in Shropshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 605. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book, when it belonged to Wenlock Priory. Ancient habitation is attested by the discovery of two caches of Bronze Age weapons. The village is situated two miles west of Dawley. Nearby is the 1335-foot-high Wrekin, one of Shropshire's famous hills with an ancient hill fort. Part of it falls within Little Wenlock parish, while the adjoining parts fall into other parishes. The name "Wenlock" as found in Much Wenlock and Little Wenlock (and also Great Wenlock, a now obsolete name, but found in some historic sources) is probably derived from the Old English *Wenan loca meaning "Wena's Stronghold" (wéna being feminine and meaning "hope") The town was recorded in the Domesday Book as Wenloch. The "Little" of the name distinguishes it from the larger settlement and market town of Much Wenlock, which is situated several miles to the south, on the other side of the River Severn. 11-year-old Alice Glaston from Little Wenlock was hanged together with two men in Much Wenlock on 13 April 1546, for an unknown crime. She is the youngest known girl legally executed in Great Britain. The village features a public house (the "Huntsman Inn"), village hall, playing field and the Church of England parish church of St Lawrence. David Cranage, later Dean of Norwich, was curate at the church in 1897-98.For many years there was small scale mining in the parish, for coal, limestone and fire clay.

Orleton Park is a cricket ground in Wellington, Shropshire. The ground was established in 1891, when Shropshire played a non first-class match against Worcestershire. It is now home to Wellington Cricket Club whose first team are in the Shropshire Premier League. Peter Byram was groundsman who since his death has been replaced by Steven Gough. The first Minor Counties Championship match played on the ground was in 1965 between Shropshire and Bedfordshire. From 1965 to 2001 the ground hosted 36 Minor Counties matches, with the last being against Shropshire and Berkshire.In 1979, the ground hosted its only first-class match to date between a combined Minor Counties team and the touring India national cricket team.The first List-A match played on the ground came in the 1974 Gillette Cup between Shropshire and Essex. From 1974 to 1999, the ground eight five List-A matches, the last of which came in the 1999 NatWest Trophy between Shropshire and the Hampshire Cricket Board.The ground has also played host to two international matches. Firstly in the 1979 ICC Trophy between Denmark and Fiji and again between the same sides in the 1986 ICC Trophy.In local domestic cricket, Orleton Park is the home ground of Wellington Cricket Club who play in the Birmingham and District Premier League.

Leighton and Eaton Constantine is a civil parish in Shropshire, England. It consists of the village of Leighton, together with the smaller villages or hamlets of Eaton Constantine, Upper Longwood and Garmston. The parish, which had a population of 420 at the 2001 census, 467 at the 2011 Census, rising from just 206 in 1911, is around six miles southwest of Telford and 26 miles from Birmingham.

Wrockwardine ( ROCK-war-dyne) is a village and civil parish in the borough of Telford and Wrekin and ceremonial county of Shropshire, England. It lies north of The Wrekin and the M54/A5, and west of Wellington. There is a Church of England parish church, St Peter's, dating back to Saxon times.

Buildwas is a village and civil parish in Shropshire, England, on the north bank of the River Severn at grid reference SJ641045. It lies on the B4380 road between Atcham and Ironbridge. The Royal Mail postcodes begin TF6 and TF8. Buildwas Primary Academy is situated on the Buildwas bank road. The school has been running since 1855, and has three classes and a nursery. Buildwas previously had a nine-hole golf course which ran between the River Severn and the site of Ironbridge Power Station. It was open to members of Buildwas Abbey Club.

Buildwas Abbey was a Cistercian (originally Savigniac) monastery located on the banks of the River Severn, at Buildwas in Shropshire, England - today about 2 miles (3.2 km) west of Ironbridge. Founded by the local bishop in 1135, it was sparsely endowed at the outset but enjoyed several periods of growth and increasing wealth: notably under Abbot Ranulf in the second half of the 12th century and again from the mid-13th century, when large numbers of acquisitions were made from the local landed gentry. Abbots were regularly used as agents by Plantagenet in their attempts to subdue Ireland and Wales and the abbey acquired a daughter house in each country. It was a centre of learning, with a substantial library, and was noted for its discipline until the economic and demographic crises of the 14th century brought about decline and difficulties, exacerbated by conflict and political instability in the Welsh Marches. The abbey was suppressed in 1536 as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII. Substantial remains of the abbey church and monks' quarters remain and are in the care of English Heritage.
