Beanthwaite is a hamlet in Cumbria, England.

Kirkby Moor is a poorly defined moorland area in southern Cumbria, England, named after the village of Kirkby-in-Furness, but stretching both sides of the A5092 road, and thus spanning the border of the Lake District National Park. The highest area, to the south of the road, and therefore outside the national park, is named Lowick High Common on Ordnance Survey maps, but "Kirkby Moor" is more commonly but incorrectly used. Lowick High common is the first UK SOTA summit to be activated 100 times. The highest point of Lowick High Common and of Kirkby Moor is 333 m above sea level. The major man-made features are a slate quarry operated by Burlington Slate Ltd and a wind farm consisting of 12 400 kW turbines which is operated by RWE Innogy. The fell is crossed by several public footpaths, as well as the Kirkby Slate Road, which has a right of access. There are also numerous tracks built across the fell in association with the wind turbines; although notices request walkers to stick to the public rights of way, in practice there is no issue with using the newer tracks, and from 28 May 2005 the land is access land under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. The wide range of paths allows for many start points and routes to explore the heather-covered moor.

Kirkby Slate Quarries, formally known as Burlington Slate Quarries, are located near Kirkby-in-Furness in Cumbria, England. The quarries have produced a characteristic blue-grey slate for hundreds of years, with large-scale production starting in the early 19th century, when the Cavendish family organised small-scale quarrying activities by local farmers into a larger group of quarries, which then attracted others into the area to live and work in the quarries from the 1820s onwards. The slates were formed during the Early Devonian when a slaty cleavage was imposed on the Ordovician and Silurian rocks of the area. The best quality slate with the most even and regular cleavage was formed from the lithologically uniform mudstone successions. The quarrying at Burlington can be directly related to the development of Kirkby, which merged from six smaller farming hamlets: Soutergate, Wall End, Beck Side, Sand Side, Marshside and Chapels. The opening of the slate quarry helped merge these, the name Kirkby dating from the construction of the Cumbrian Coast railway line to the village. The quarry does not have a galleries system, as many quarries are, but as an enormous pit several hundred feet in depth. The quarry operations have spread throughout and under Kirkby Moor, but now production only takes place at the very bottom of the quarry; with the rock being removed via a cutting from a shallower part of the pit. The slate blocks were initially removed from the large open pits by blasting and then reduced to a manageable size using a mell (sledge hammer) and tully (long-handled wedge-shaped hammer) before being transported to the cutting sheds, sawn to size and riven into thin slates. Typical of many Welsh slate quarries, such as Dinorwig, Penrhyn and Rhiw-Bach, Burlington adopted the use of a long series of inclined trackways and water balance lifts to provide material transport from the quarries. The lowest of the series was the Sandside, which connected Burlington with the port and mainline railway at Sandside on the Duddon Estuary.

Blawith Knott is a hill in the south of the English Lake District, near Woodland, Cumbria. It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. It reaches 806 feet (246 m) and Wainwright's clockwise route from the fell road to the south-west also includes Tottlebank Height at 775 feet (236 m). He describes Blawith Knott as "a magnificent viewpoint", with both a panorama of Lake District fells to the north and, to the east to south, views which, on a clear day, include the Howgill Fells, Whernside and Ingleborough.

Gawthwaite is a village in Cumbria, England. It is located along the A5092 road, 4.8 miles (7.7 km) north of Ulverston. It is on the Grize Beck stream, on the edge of Lake District National Park. Gawthwaite High Quarry is in the vicinity. Before it became the A5092, the road through the village was the B5280: this can still be seen on the two village roadsigns, which are clearly visible on Google Street View.

St John the Evangelist's Church is in the hamlet of Woodland, about 4 kilometres (2 mi) to the northeast of Broughton-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Furness, the archdeaconry of Westmorland and Furness, and the diocese of Carlisle. Its benefice is united with those of St Mary Magdalene, Broughton-in-Furness, Holy Innocents, Broughton Mills, St John, Ulpha, and Holy Trinity, Seathwaite.The church was built in 1864–65, and was the third church to be built on the site. The earlier churches had been built in 1698 and 1822. The present church was designed by the Lancaster architect E. G. Paley, having been designed by him in 1862. It cost nearly £1,000 (equivalent to £100,000 in 2021), and provided seating for 150 people. In 1868–69 a parsonage was built for the church, which was also designed by Paley.St John's is a small and simple church, like many other churches nearby, consisting of only a nave and an apse. It has a flat-topped bellcote, which is surmounted by four small spikes, each in the form of an obelisk.

Woodland is a dispersed hamlet within the civil parish of Kirkby Ireleth in the Furness region of Cumbria, England, and is located in the southern part of the Lake District National Park, west of Coniston Water, between Torver and Broughton-in-Furness.Woodland was served by the Woodland Railway Station which was on the now disused and lifted branch line to Coniston. This station was opened with the line in June 1859, and closed by British Railways to passengers in 1958 and goods in 1962. Today the station building is a private residence. Woodland was also served by the Aulthurstside Primary School, which was endowed and first documented in 1724 when its master was nominated by the minister, trustees and sidesmen. In 1828 the current school house was erected by subscription, but by 1947, there were only eleven pupils, and it was closed. Today the school house is a private residence and, as of 2012, a Caravan Club site with five pitches. A Baptist Meeting House was supposedly built in the vicinity in the 17th century, and has also long since been closed.Woodland is today served only by the Anglican Church of Saint John the Evangelist from St Mary Magdalene's Church, Broughton-in-Furness in the Diocese of Carlisle, Cumbria. The church building was erected in 1864–65 and parsonage in 1868–69, both to the design of the architect Edward Graham Paley. Previous buildings were erected on the same site in 1698 and 1822. This building is not included on the National Heritage List for England.From 1900 to 1906, Sea View Cottages in Woodland was the summer residence of the artist, Henry Robinson Hall and family.

Woodland Fell is an upland area in the south of the English Lake District, south of Torver, Cumbria. It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. Wainwright's route is a clockwise circuit from the hamlet of Woodland, and includes the summits of Yew Bank at 678 feet (207 m) and Wool Knott at 730 feet (220 m), with Beacon Tarn (also visited on his Beacon Fell walk) between them. He describes the walk as: "a connoisseur's piece, every step an uninhibited joy, every corner a delight."

Osmotherley is a civil parish in South Lakeland, Cumbria, England, extending north from Ulverston. The village of Broughton Beck is the largest settlement in the parish. Before local government reorganization in 1974, Osmotherley was in Lancashire. Since 2003 it has a joint parish council with Mansriggs and Egton with Newland.The only listed building in the parish is St John the Evangelist's Church (grade II).At the 2011 census Osmotherley was grouped with Mansriggs giving a total population of 302.

Rosthwaite is a settlement in the Broughton West civil parish of Westmorland and Furness, Cumbria England. It is part of the Lake District, 3 miles (4.8 km) north-east of Broughton-in-Furness. The settlement is within the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency of the United Kingdom Parliament. Prior to Brexit in 2020 it was part of the North West England constituency of the European Parliament.

St John the Evangelist's Church is in the village of Osmotherley, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Furness, the archdeaconry of Westmorland and Furness, and the diocese of Carlisle. Its benefice is united with St Mary with Holy Trinity, Ulverston. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.

The Furness Fells are a multitude of hills and mountains in the Furness region of Cumbria, England. Historically part of Lancashire, the Furness Fells or High Furness is the name given to the upland part of Furness, that is, that part of Furness lying north of the line between Ulverston and Ireleth. The hills lie largely within the English Lake District. The term Furness Fells is also sometimes used as a synonym with Coniston Fells, perhaps partly as a result of the placing of the words "Furness Fells" on some Ordnance Survey 1:250 000 maps. The Coniston Fells properly form only part of the Furness Fells, albeit with all the highest mountains; other fells in Furness are of lower altitude. The Coniston Fells form part of the Southern Fells of the Lake District as defined by Alfred Wainwright.
