Canton of Vihiers

Vihiers (French pronunciation: [vije] ) is a former commune in the Maine-et-Loire department in western France. On 1 January 2016, it was merged into the new commune of Lys-Haut-Layon.

The Battle of Vihiers (18 July 1793) was a battle between Royalist and Republican French forces at Vihiers during the War in the Vendée. After the Republican division under Jacques-Marie Pilote La Barolière advanced into the heart of the revolt area, it was attacked by the Vendeans under Dominique Piron de La Vienne and routed. The advance guard under Jacques-François Menou held its ground for a long time, but many Republican units from the main body quickly took to their heels. The Republican cavalry under Louis-Nicolas Davout covered the disorderly retreat. The Royalists suffered about 1,000 killed and wounded but inflicted 2,000 killed and wounded on their enemies as well as capturing 3,000 soldiers and 25 artillery pieces.

Lys-Haut-Layon (French pronunciation: [liso lɛjɔ̃] ) is a commune in the Maine-et-Loire department of western France. The municipality was established on 1 January 2016 and consists of the former communes of Vihiers (including Saint-Hilaire-du-Bois and Le Voide), Les Cerqueux-sous-Passavant, La Fosse-de-Tigné, Nueil-sur-Layon, Tancoigné, Tigné and Trémont.

Les Cerqueux-sous-Passavant (French pronunciation: [le sɛʁkø su pasavɑ̃] , literally Les Cerqueux under Passavant) is a former commune in the Maine-et-Loire department in western France. On 1 January 2016, it was merged into the new commune of Lys-Haut-Layon.

Cernusson (French pronunciation: [sɛʁnysɔ̃] ) is a commune in the Maine-et-Loire department in western France.

Cléré-sur-Layon (French pronunciation: [kleʁe syʁ lɛjɔ̃] , literally Cléré on Layon) is a commune in the Maine-et-Loire department in western France.

Tigné (French pronunciation: [tiɲe] ) is a small village, administratively a former commune, in the Maine-et-Loire department in western France. On January 1, 2016 it became a delegated commune within the new commune of Lys-Haut-Layon. Wines produced in the commune carry the protected name Coteaux-du-Layon.
