Cumnor

Cumnor Hill is a hill in the civil parish of Cumnor, to the west of (but not within) the city of Oxford, in the English county of Oxfordshire. In 1974 it was transferred from Berkshire. It is also the name of the ribbon development between the original Cumnor village and Botley, outside the ring road on the outskirts of Oxford. The road up Cumnor Hill was the original route of the A420 between Oxford and Swindon, until the Cumnor Hill by-pass was built in the 1970s. The road is now unclassified. At the top of Cumnor Hill is the hamlet of Chawley, where the Kimmeridge Clay is close to the surface. There were brickworks there until 1937.

Filchampstead is a hamlet within Cumnor Parish, Oxfordshire. Until the 1974 boundary changes it was in Berkshire. It lies on the Cumnor Road (B4017) between Farmoor and Cumnor village, at the foot of a hill known locally as 'Tumbledown Dick'. Filchampstead lies alongside Farmoor Reservoir and the Oxford Green Belt Way public footpath.

Hurst Hill or Cumnor Hurst is a 20.6-hectare (51-acre) biological and geological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Oxford in Oxfordshire. It is a Geological Conservation Review site.The site is owned by All Souls College, Oxford, and its mosses and liverworts have been monitored for more than fifty years. The hill is also important geologically. In 1879 a fossil of a Camptosaurus prestwichii, a large herbivorous dinosaur dating to the Upper Jurassic 153 million years ago, was found on the site. The fossil belongs to a typically North African genus, and provides evidence of a land bridge across the proto-Atlantic in the Late Jurassic.The hill is mentioned in Matthew Arnold's poem The Scholar Gipsy.

Henwood is a hamlet about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) south-west of Oxford, England. Henwood is in the Wootton civil parish in the Vale of White Horse district. Historically, Henwood was a single farm in the parish of Cumnor, until Wootton was created as a separate parish in the 19th century. Since then, there has been ribbon development along the B4017 road. Henwood was in Berkshire until the 1974 boundary changes transferred it to Oxfordshire. Henwood Farmhouse dates back to the 17th century. It is a Grade II Listed Building.

Eaton is a hamlet about 4.5 miles (7 km) west of Oxford and about 5 miles (8 km) northwest of Abingdon. Eaton is in the civil parish of Appleton-with-Eaton, which is traditionally part of Berkshire, and now in the ceremonial county of Oxfordshire.

Youlbury House is a Grade II listed modernist house located in the Youlbury Woods near the Youlbury Scout Activity Centre and the Boars Hill in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom. It was designed by Hal Moggridge and built from 1969 to 1971 for Lord Goodhart (William Goodhart QC). The house is noted for its architectural significance and the close rapport between the client and the architect. It is also recognized for preserving the historical elements of the original Victorian garden of the renowned archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans.

Lashford Lane Fen is a 7-hectare (17-acre) nature reserve north of Dry Sandford in Oxfordshire. It is managed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust. It is part of Cothill Fen, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation.Sandford Brook runs through this wet valley, which has limestone grassland, fen, woods, scrub, a pond and reedbeds. Reed buntings winter on the site, and other birds include water rail and reed warblers. There are common frogs and grass snakes.

Parsonage Moor is a 6-hectare (15-acre) nature reserve north-west of Abingdon-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom. It is managed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust. It is part of Cothill Fen, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation. Part of it is in Cothill Fen and Parsonage Moor Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I.This site has fen, which is a nationally rare habitat, wet woodland, ancient woodland, open water and reedbeds. There are carnivorous plants, such as butterwort, which traps insects on its sticky leaves, and bladderwort, which traps them underwater. Other flora include southern marsh-orchids and the nationally scarce narrow-leaved marsh orchid

Matthew Arnold School is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located just west of Oxford near Cumnor Hill and Botley and is named after 19th-century poet Matthew Arnold.The school contains around 1,300 pupils from years 7 to 13, and circa 80 teaching staff. The school catchment area includes Oxford to the west of the railway station, Botley, Cumnor, Binsey, Wytham, and stretches west towards Appleton, Fyfield and Kingston Bagpuize.Previously a community school founded in 1958 as Matthew Arnold Secondary Modern, it was administered by Oxfordshire County Council. The school was built for a total cost of £125,000 and was opened by Henry Brooke who was then Minister of Housing. In August 2015, following a community consultation, Matthew Arnold School converted to academy status and is now part of the Acer Trust. The school continues to coordinate with Oxfordshire County Council for admissions.

Besselsleigh or Bessels Leigh is an English village and civil parish about 4+1⁄2 miles (7 km) southwest of Oxford. Besselsleigh was part of Berkshire until the 1974 boundary changes transferred it to Oxfordshire. The village is just off the A420 road between Oxford and Swindon.

Appleton-with-Eaton is a civil parish in the Vale of White Horse district of Oxfordshire, England, south west of Oxford. Historically it was part of Berkshire until the 1974 boundary changes transferred it to Oxfordshire. It consists of Appleton and Eaton, on the south bank (here the east bank) of the River Thames. Its area is 8.38 km². According to the 2011 census the parish had a 915 residents, an increase of 18 over ten years.
