The Marquis of Pombal Square (Portuguese: Praça do Marquês de Pombal) is an important roundabout in the city of Lisbon, Portugal. It is located between the Avenida da Liberdade (Liberty Avenue) and the Eduardo VII Park in the former parish of Coração de Jesus and in the quarter of Santo António. The square is the radiating point for various important avenues: Liberdade, Duque de Loulé and Fontes Pereira de Melo, as well as the streets Braamcamp and Joaquim António de Aguiar. The Blue and Yellow lines (Linha Azul and Linha Amarela) of the Lisbon Metro (Metropolitano de Lisboa) stop at Marquês de Pombal station, which was called Rotunda until March 1998. Eighteen bus lines operated by Carris also serve the square.Its name is a reference to Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marquis of Pombal, 1st Count of Oeiras, the powerful prime-minister who ruled Portugal from 1750 to 1777.

The capture of Lisbon occurred in 1094 when the Almoravids, led by Syr ibn Abi Bakr, invaded and captured Lisbon from the Castilian governor, Count Raymond of Burgundy.

Lisbon (; Portuguese: Lisboa [liʒˈboɐ] (listen)) is the capital and the largest city of Portugal, with an estimated population of 544,851 within its administrative limits in an area of 100.05 km2. Lisbon's urban area extends beyond the city's administrative limits with a population of around 2.7 million people, being the 10th-most populous urban area in the European Union. About 3 million people live in the Lisbon metropolitan area, which represents approximately 27% of the country's population. It is mainland Europe's westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. Lisbon lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus. The westernmost portions of its metro area, the Portuguese Riviera, form the westernmost point of Continental Europe, culminating at Cabo da Roca. Lisbon is recognised as an alpha-level global city because of its importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education and tourism. Lisbon is one of two Portuguese cities (alongside Porto) to be recognised as a global city. Lisbon is home to three companies in the Global 2000. It is one of the major economic centres in Europe, with a growing financial sector and one of the largest container ports on Europe's Atlantic coast. Additionally, Humberto Delgado Airport served 29 million passengers in 2018, being the busiest airport in Portugal, the third busiest in the Iberian Peninsula and the 20th busiest in Europe. The motorway network and the high-speed rail system of Alfa Pendular links the main cities of Portugal to Lisbon. The city is the ninth-most-visited city in Southern Europe, after Istanbul, Rome, Barcelona, Milan, Athens, Venice, Madrid and Florence with 3,539,400 tourists in 2018. The Lisbon region has a higher GDP PPP per capita than any other region in Portugal. Its GDP amounts to US$110.3 billion and thus $32,434 per capita. The city occupies the 40th place of highest gross earnings in the world. Most of the headquarters of multinational corporations in Portugal are located in the Lisbon area. It is also the political centre of the country, as its seat of government and residence of the head of state. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the second-oldest European capital city (after Athens), predating other modern European capitals by centuries. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. After the fall of the Roman Empire it was ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century; later it was captured by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1147 Afonso Henriques conquered the city and since then it has been the political, economic and cultural centre of Portugal.

Count of Oeiras (Portuguese: Conde de Oeiras) was a Portuguese title of nobility created by a royal decree, dated July 15, 1759, by King Joseph I of Portugal, and granted to Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, head of the Portuguese government. Later, through another royal decree dated September 16, 1769, the same king upgraded the title to Marquis of Pombal (Portuguese: Marquês de Pombal).

Marquês de Pombal is an interchange station where the Blue and Yellow Lines of the Lisbon Metro connect, being located on Praça Marquês de Pombal.

Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (UAL; Autonomous University of Lisbon) is a private university located in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. UAL was founded on December 13, 1985.Its seat is in the Palace of the Counts of Redondo.

novobanco is a Portuguese bank introduced on 4 August 2014 by the Bank of Portugal to rescue assets and liabilities of Banco Espírito Santo (BES). BES was the second largest private financial institution in Portugal in terms of net assets, as well as one of the oldest and most reputed Portuguese banks. The rescue of Banco Espirito Santo came after weeks of increasingly bad news about the financial state of the lender, particularly its exposure to a cascade of companies headed by its founding Espirito Santo family headed by Ricardo Salgado. BES was to be split into a "good bank", renamed Novo Banco, and a "bad bank", which will house BES's exposures to the troubled Espirito Santo business empire as well as its Angolan subsidiary BESA. Novo Banco was recapitalised to the tune of 4.9 billion euros by a special bank Resolution Fund. The Portuguese state lends the fund 4.4 billion euros. The bank had a board for the 2014-2017 mandate presided by Vítor Bento.A month and a half after he started up his duties, Vítor Bento abandoned the leadership of Novo Banco and was replaced in September 2014 by Eduardo Stock da Cunha.The Resolution Fund is the bank's only shareholder until a sale transaction takes place. This fund is a structure created in 2012 with contributions from Portuguese banks and from the financial sector, and its operations are audited by the Portuguese regulator Banco de Portugal.Novo Banco incorporates every staff, branch, deposits, credit customers and holders of senior bonds of Banco Espírito Santo.In August 2014 Novo Banco launched its first communication campaign, to mark the beginning of the change in the image of the bank. From the campaign, whose symbol was a butterfly, the bank launched its new identity on September 22, which incorporated the animal's wings in the shape of a mathematical power, as a way to symbolize the commitment to “have once more the leading role it once had.” The change in the brand was made progressively, starting by the facades in the bank's branches.On 30 June 2015, the resolution fund had received three binding bid offers on Novo Banco, from the Spanish banking group Banco Santander SA, the Chinese insurance group Fosun International Limited, the privately owned Chinese insurer Anbang Insurance, and the American private-equity firm Apollo Global Management. One of the bidders opted to improve their offer on 7 August 2015. The selection and sale to the final winner of the bidding process is expected to take place during Q3-2015. On 20 August, Banco de Portugal released a statement that the final phase of the sale process, was expected to conclude by 31 August. In September however the sale was cancelled owing to the offers being deemed unsatisfactory.In March, 2016, it was announced that Portuguese state-rescued lender Novo Banco was planning to cut 1,000 jobs to help to reduce operating costs by 150 million euros ($163 million) as part of its restructuring plan agreed with the European Union. The proposed job cuts equated to 14 percent of the bank's workforce at the time.In October 2016, the resolution fund had received four offers on Novo Banco from China's Minsheng Financial Holding, Apollo and Centerbridge and Lone Star. In January 2017, Aethel Partners made an offer to buy Novo Banco.In March 2017, the Portuguese Central Bank announced that Lone Star Funds will acquire 75% of third largest Portuguese bank, Novo Banco, in return for a capital injection of €1bn. The other 25% will be retained by the Portuguese bank's resolution fund. In October 2017 the deal was closed and Lone Star Funds started controlling 75% of Novo Banco.

The Embassy of the Philippines in Lisbon is the diplomatic mission of the Republic of the Philippines to the Portuguese Republic. It is located in the freguesia of Santo António in central Lisbon, next to the Casa-Museu Medeiros e Almeida, and near the Avenida da Liberdade and the Marquis of Pombal Square. Although the current chancery dates from 2010, the Philippines also maintained a previous resident embassy in Portugal between 1965 and 1974.

Hospital de Santa Marta (Portuguese pronunciation: [ɔʃ.piˈtaɫ dɨ ˈsɐ̃.tɐ ˈmaɾtɐ], "Saint Martha's Hospital") is a public Central Hospital serving the Greater Lisbon area as part of the Central Lisbon University Hospital Centre (CHULC), a state-owned enterprise. Originally a Poor Clares nunnery, it became one of the country's main schools of Internal Medicine during most of the 20th century; more recently, it became especially differentiated in Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery: it is one of the main reference centres on the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease in Portugal.

Jorge Álvares Foundation is a non-profit organization with public utility status established in Lisbon on 14 December 1999. It was recognized by the Portuguese government in 2002, and received its public utility status in 2004. It received its initial funding from the Fundação para a Cooperação e o Desenvolvimento de Macau (MOP 50 million) and Stanley Ho (MOP 100 million).The foundation is named after Jorge Álvares, credited as the first European to have reached China by sea during the Age of Discovery. According to its by-laws, it takes as its purpose the development of cultural, educational, scientific, artistic, and social activities that promote an intercultural dialogue resulting from the specificity of Macau and multicentury Portuguese presence in this territory. In addition, it intends to support Portuguese institutions that promote the study and promotion of Macau, as well as activities related to the Macanese diaspora.

The National Society of Fine Arts (Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes - SNBA) is a Portuguese cultural association in Lisbon, founded on 16 March 1901, whose main objectives are to promote and assist the progress of art, to defend the interests of artists, particularly its members, and to cooperate with State and other organizations to develop the arts. The society has played a significant role in the development of the careers of many Portuguese painters, sculptors, architects, and visual artists. Over the years the society has promoted free art courses (drawing, model drawing, painting, theory, and history of art, etc.). In 1965, it pioneered the teaching of the sociology of art and design in Portugal. Among other activities, it has hosted lecture series, conferences, and educational exhibitions on a broad range of themes, as well as exhibitions by members and book launches. It also holds a large collection of works of art and historical archives.
