Thorney Island (West Sussex)

Royal Air Force Thorney Island, or more simply RAF Thorney Island, is a former Royal Air Force station located on Thorney Island, West Sussex, England, 6.6 miles (10.6 km) west of Chichester and 7.1 miles (11.4 km) east of Portsmouth, Hampshire.

West Thorney is a village and civil parish in the Chichester district in West Sussex, England located nine kilometres (5.6 miles) west of Chichester south of the A27 road. West Thorney is a village and civil parish on Thorney Island, the southern part of a peninsula of land between two arms of Chichester Harbour, separated from the mainland by a channel called the Great Deep. Just to the south is the smaller Pilsey Island, a haven for birds. The island was a World War II airfield RAF Thorney Island which remained in use until 1976. Since 1982 the base has been used by the Royal Artillery. Only the church and coastal footpath are open to the public. It is necessary to give one's name and address by intercom to be allowed through remotely controlled gates. The parish has a land area of 1,223 hectares (3,020 acres). In the 2001 census 1079 people lived in 217 households, of whom 679 were economically active. At the 2011 Census the population was 1,183.

Eames Farm is a 132.5-hectare (327-acre) Local Nature Reserve on Thorney Island in West Sussex. It is owned by the Chichester Harbour Conservancy, West Sussex County Council and the Ministry of Defence and managed by the Chichester Harbour Conservancy. It is part of Chichester and Langstone Harbours Ramsar site and Special Protection Area and Chichester Harbour Site of Special Scientific Interest.This area of grazing marsh, wetland and reedbed is managed as an organic farm. It has many rare plants and insects and a diverse variety of migrating waders and wildfowl.The site is private land with no public access.

Pilsey Island is a 17.8-hectare (44-acre) Local Nature Reserve in Chichester Harbour in West Sussex. It is owned by the Ministry of Defence and managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. It is part of the Chichester Harbour Site of Special Scientific Interest and Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I*, the Chichester and Langstone Harbours Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and the Solent Maritime Special Area of Conservation.The island has sand dunes, mudflats, salt marsh and bare and vegetated shingle. There are many plants, spiders and insects.There is no public access to the site.

Nutborne Marshes is a 386.9-hectare (956-acre) Local Nature Reserve east of Thorney Island in West Sussex. It is owned and managed by Chichester Harbour Conservancy. It is part of the Chichester Harbour Site of Special Scientific Interest and Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I*, the Chichester and Langstone Harbours Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and the Solent Maritime Special Area of Conservation.This is an area of intertidal and subtidal saltmarsh and mudflats. There are many invertebrates on the mudflats such as ragworms and the banks have unusual plants including sea wormwood. Migrating birds include curlews, grey plovers and dunlins.There is no access to the site but it can be viewed from a footpath.

It lies to the east of the Hampshire County Border at Emsworth, the west of Chidham (recently the boundary has been changed) and south-east of Westbourne. Southbourne parish comprises Lumley, Hermitage, Thornham, Prinsted and part of Nutbourne.

Fowley Island is a small uninhabited island in Chichester Harbour, around 900 metres south of the coast at Emsworth between Hayling Island and Thorney Island. The island is an area of raised ground approximately 180 metres by 80 metres amid the tidal sands between the channels of Sweare Deep and Emsworth Channel. The island has appeared on maps since at least 1791 when it featured on Milne's map of the area.

Gutner Point is a 69-hectare (170-acre) Local Nature Reserve on Hayling Island in Hampshire. It is owned by Hampshire County Council and managed by Hampshire Countryside Service. It is part of Chichester and Langstone Harbours Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, of Solent Maritime Special Area of Conservation, and of Chichester Harbour Site of Special Scientific Interest.This site in Chichester Harbour has inter-tidal muds, grassland and saltmarsh. Flora includes sea-lavender. Many birds feed on invertebrates in the mud at low tide and rest on foreshore at high tide.There is no public access to the site.

Brook Meadow (Emsworth) is a 3.9-hectare (9.6-acre) Local Nature Reserve in Emsworth in Hampshire. It is owned by Havant Borough Council and managed by Brook Meadow Conservation Group.Most of this site is grassland, which is surrounded by woodland and flanked by two streams. The diverse wildlife includes water voles.
