Pynes House

Cowley is a hamlet in the parish of Upton Pyne in Devon, England. Cowley church was built as a chapel of ease to Brampford Speke by Rohde Hawkins in 1867–8.It is chiefly notable for a fine three-arched bridge of classical design, built over the River Creedy in 1813-14 by James Green, pupil of John Rennie and surveyor to the county of Devon. Although so recent in date, the bridge has been scheduled as an ancient monument. Cowley Bridge Junction is a railway junction on the former Bristol and Exeter Railway, that allows access to the former North Devon Railway towards Barnstaple, now renamed the Tarka Line. In 1848, the Exeter and Crediton Railway had built a station at Cowley Bridge, but it never opened.

Upton Pyne is a parish and village in Devon, England. The parish lies just north west of Exeter, mainly between the River Exe and River Creedy. The village is located north of Cowley and west of Brampford Speke and Stoke Canon. It has a population of 539.

The River Creedy is a small river in Devon, England. It gives its name to the local town or ton of Crediton, which is on its west bank, and to several local historic estates, namely Creedy Hilion, Creedy Peitevin (later called Creedy Wiger) and Creedy Park, in the parish of Sandford, also to the Benefice of North Creedy. Just below the town, the river merges with the River Yeo and it ends where it meets the River Exe at Cowley Bridge. The river is overlooked by Fordy Wood Copse , a 0.64 hectares (1.58 acres) woodland owned and managed by the Woodland Trust.The name is believed to be of Celtic origin, but views of its precise origin differ. According to one source it derives from a root meaning winding. Another view holds that it means shrinking, as compared with the more powerful Yeo.

Stoke Hill is a large hill rising to the north of Exeter in Devon, England. It is significant as the site of both an Iron Age hill fort and a later Roman signal station. The hill fort is situated slightly below and northeast of the Roman signal station, putting it in a better position to have sight of a number of other hill forts simultaneously. It is at an elevation of approximately 145 metres (476 ft) above sea level. The signal station is at the highest point of the hill, 159 metres (522 ft) above sea level. Stoke Hill is also the name of a northern suburb of Exeter, at grid reference SX934943.

Exwick is an historic parish and manor in Devon, England, which today is a north-western suburb of the City of Exeter. Its name is derived from the River Exe, which forms its eastern boundary. It is also an Ecclesiastical parish and an electoral ward. Mentioned in the Domesday Book, it was the site of farms, orchards and mills. Exwick meaning farm by the river Exe. Being on the edge of the Exe floodplain, mill industries were important in Exwick. A leat from the Exe was dug before the Doomsday book was compiled. Other industries formerly in the area include clothmaking, aeroparts and baking. Manufacture of wooden flooring continues to this day. There were a number of large houses in the area including Cleve House which became a Guide Dogs for the Blind training centre in the 1950s. Later it became private houses and the site of a new primary school. The Mallet family bought Exwick Mill.Another important family with an Exwick Connection were the Gibbs. Andrew Gibbs from Clyst St Mary in Exeter, following several adventures, was involved in setting up the Antony Gibbs & Sons cloth business in 1778. William Gibbs paid to make Exwick a separate parish from St Thomas and extend the Chapel of ease into the full church of St. Andrews. The area is often used as a location for painters to look back at Exeter, including Frances Towne in 1773 and J. M. W. Turner in 1811.The murder of Kate Bushell, one of Britain's most high-profile unsolved murders, occurred in Exwick in November 1997.

The Northcott Theatre is a theatre situated on the Streatham Campus of the University of Exeter, Exeter, Devon, England. It opened in 1967 and was run until 2010 by the Northcott Theatre Foundation, when the company ceased operating after a period in administration. The theatre is now known as Exeter Northcott Theatre and became a registered charity (no. 1151620) in June 2013.

The Streatham Campus in Exeter, Devon, is the largest campus of the University of Exeter. The centre of the campus is occupied by teaching, administrative and service buildings. Most of the university's student halls of residence, and some accommodation for postgraduates and families, are on its edges.

The University of Exeter offers approximately 5,900 purposebuilt student bed spaces for its students. The majority of its residences are located on campus, although 30% of self-catered accommodations (particularly for the St Lukes Campus) are located off-campus. The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum (formally the Bill Douglas Centre for the History of Cinema and Popular Culture) is a public museum and an academic research facility on the Streatham Campus of the University of Exeter in England. Founded in 1994 and opened to the public in 1997, the museum houses one of Britain's largest public collections of books, prints, artefacts and ephemera relating to the history and prehistory of cinema. The museum has two galleries of exhibits which are open to the public. There is a reading room for researchers to access and consult materials from the collection by appointment. The museum is named after the filmmaker Bill Douglas. The collection that Douglas put together with his friend Peter Jewell founded the museum; many other donors have added to the holdings since. The museum now holds over 80,000 artefacts from the seventeenth century to the present day. There is a large collection of material on optical media prior to the invention of cinema including holdings on magic lanterns, shadow puppets, panoramas and dioramas, optical illusions and peep shows. There are also significant holdings on cinema pioneers, early and silent cinema, film stars, such as Charlie Chaplin and Marilyn Monroe, and film publicity material and merchandising up to the present day.There are also a number of filmmakers' production archives, including Bill Douglas's working papers, the Townley Cooke collection, and the archives of producer/director Don Boyd, and producers Gavrik Losey and James Mackay.

Pennsylvania is a suburb situated on the high ground to the north of the city of Exeter in the county of Devon, England. It lies between the ancient deer park of Duryard and Stoke Hill. It was named after the US state by Joseph Sparkes, a Quaker banker who built the first terrace, Pennsylvania Park, in about 1821. Its southern slopes, nearest to the city, include many spacious late Victorian and Edwardian houses, while on the steep higher hills, heading north out of Exeter, the housing is mainly 1920s–1970s, with a few newer estates on the city's extremities. Its proximity within walking distance of Exeter University has made it popular with academics and students. J. K. Rowling was a resident of Pennsylvania while a student at Exeter University in the late 1980s.

Brampford Speke ( BRAM-fərdz-beek) is a small village in Devon, 4 miles (6 km) to the north of Exeter. The population is 419. It is located on red sandstone cliffs overlooking the river Exe. Its sister village of Upton Pyne lies to its southwest, and Stoke Canon is across the river, to the east. To the south is the hamlet of Cowley with its chapel of ease, which was formerly part of the ecclesiastical parish of Brampford Speke. Brampford Speke has a Church of England parish church dedicated to St Peter. There is a primary school in the heart of the village near the river Exe, which was built as a national school in 1867. A baptist chapel was built near the school in 1894. The village also has a corner shop/tea room and a local pub, the Agricultural Inn (formerly the Lazy Toad). The village contains a number of fine houses, including the former landowner's Brampford House in the centre of the village and some traditional cob and thatch cottages and farmhouses.
