Charleston Dry Dock & Machine Company (renamed Charleston Drydock and Shipbuilding Co. in the late-1930s) was a shipyard located in Charleston, South Carolina, on the Cooper River. The shipyard is significant for its contribution to marine engineering, including the first entirely-welded commercial ship built in the United States. It was owned and operated by Leland Louis Green who was the first registered naval architect in South Carolina.

The International African American Museum (IAAM) is a museum of African-American history being built in Charleston, South Carolina, on the site where Gadsden's Wharf, the disembarkation point of up to 40% of all American enslaved persons, once stood. Construction of the IAAM began in January 2020 after 20 years of planning. It is slated to open in January 2023.

Gadsden's Wharf is a wharf located in Charleston, South Carolina. It was the first destination for an estimated 100,000 enslaved Africans during the peak of the international slave trade. Some researchers have estimated that 40% of the enslaved Africans in the United States landed at Gadsden's Wharf. At one point, the wharf was the largest in America. The wharf is now home to the South Carolina Aquarium, the Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center, and the International African American Museum which opened in 2023.

The U.S. Custom House or U.S. Customhouse is the custom house in Charleston, South Carolina. Construction began in 1852, but was interrupted in 1859 due to costs and the possibility of South Carolina's secession from the Union. After the Civil War, construction was restarted in 1870 and completed in 1879. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 9, 1974. It is also a contributing property of the Charleston Historic District.

Concord Park is a 9.1-acre development in Charleston, South Carolina, near the Cooper River and South Carolina Aquarium. The name is used to refer to a 5.4 acre public park planned for the center of the development, the 3.7 acre mixed-use development along the north and south edges, and the overall development.

The Vendue Range in Charleston, South Carolina, United States was a historic commercial street that hosted open-air sales of livestock, produce, and other goods. Vendue is a historic word of French origin that means auction or public sale. The street was among those bombarded by the U.S. Army during the last phase of the American Civil War. The street is now one of the boundaries of a successful downtown revitalization project known as Waterfront Park.

The St. Johannes Rectory is a historic two-story home in the Ansonborough neighborhood of Charleston, South Carolina. The house was built about 1846 by Joel Smith, a planter from Abbeville, South Carolina. The house follows a side-hall plan with two large rooms on the first floor, both of which open onto the piazzas on the west, and a main staircase and hallway along the east side. Mrs. Lydia Bryan owned a house at 50 Hasell Street, but it was destroyed in the Ansonborough fire of 1838. She conveyed the lot to her son, John Bryan, in 1841. After other owners, the empty lot was sold to Smith in 1846. He built the house. On January 26, 1920, the house was bought by St. Johannes Lutheran Church for use as its rectory.

Ansonborough is a neighborhood in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1726, Captain George Anson acquired a 64-acre tract from Thomas Gadsden. Anson's lands were divided into smaller parcels for development, and several streets were named either for his ships or for himself: George and Anson (from his own name), Scarborough and Squirrel (named for the ships he came to America on), and Centurion (the ship he made his fortune with). Scarborough and Centurion Streets correspond to modern Anson and Society Street, while Squirrel is now a part of Meeting Street. On April 24, 1838, the area was devastated by a fire that swept from the southwest to the northeast through the area. When rebuilding began, the state offered loans on the condition that brick was used. By the 1950s, the area had suffered from a serious decline, and the Historic Charleston Foundation developed a program to save the historic area using a revolving fund.

Waterfront Park is an eight-acre (5 ha) park along approximately one-half mile of the Cooper River in Charleston, South Carolina. The park received the 2007 Landmark Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This award "recognizes a distinguished landscape architecture project completed between 15 and 50 years ago that retains its original design integrity and contributes significantly to the public realm of the community in which it is located."

The South Carolina Aquarium, located in Charleston, South Carolina, opened on May 19, 2000 on the historic Charleston Harbor. It is home to more than ten thousand plants and animals including North American river otters, loggerhead sea turtles, alligators, great blue herons, owls, lined seahorses, jellyfish, pufferfish, green moray eels, horseshoe crabs, sea stars, pythons, and sharks. The largest exhibit in the zoo is the Great Ocean Tank, which extends from the first to the third floor of the Aquarium and is the deepest tank in North America (42 feet); it holds more than 385,000 US gallons (1,460,000 l) of water and contains more than 700 animals. The Aquarium also features a Touch Tank, where patrons may touch horseshoe crabs, Atlantic stingrays, and other marine animals.

The Augustus Taft House is a Greek Revival house at 57 Laurens St., Charleston, South Carolina in the historic Ansonborough neighborhood. The house was constructed by Augustus Taft about 1836 using black cypress. Its interior has three fireplaces done in black Italian marble and pine flooring. The house has large, three-part windows that permit access to the piazzas.The house's interior retains the original room configuration. The front door in on the north facade and opens onto a stair hall. There are twin parlors to the right (the west side of the house) and a dining room. Behind the house is a three-story kitchen house. The house was two-story piazzas on the west side. Augustus Taft, a member of the same New England family of President Taft, built the house in 1836, and it survived a fire in 1838 that devastated most of the Ansonborough neighborhood. Taft's daughter married Pierre Gaillard Stoney, and the house remained in the family more than one hundred years. In 1865, the house was used to house freed slaves by the Freedmen's Bureau for six months.The house (both inside and out) is protected by a preservation easement given to the Historic Charleston Foundation.

The Chazal House is a Greek Revival house at 66 Anson St., Charleston, South Carolina in the historic Ansonborough neighborhood. The house was built in 1839 by the widow of a famous privateer, J.P. Chazal, who captured approximately 40 ships during the War of 1812. His widow, Elizabeth, had immigrated to Charleston from Santo Domingo after a slave rebellion on the island in 1794. Their son Dr. John P. Chazal inherited the property shortly after the house was built and held it until 1869. Following other intermediate owners, the Historic Charleston Foundation acquired the house on June 9, 1960, and resold it to Mr. and Mrs. William McIntosh III in 1963. The house was restored by the McIntosh family between 1963 and the early 1970s. The house is a fine example of a simple Greek Revival house with red Philadelphia brick run in American bond on the north and south facades and common bond (an early use in Charleston) on the front, or west, facade.
