North Sandwich, New Hampshire

The Lower Corner Historic District encompasses a small village center in the town of Sandwich, New Hampshire. Lower Corner is a rural village that is strung along New Hampshire Route 109 on either side of its junction with School House Road, about one mile from the main village of Center Sandwich. The village was developed relatively early in Sandwich's history, although its oldest buildings now date to the early 19th century. There are 25 contributing structures, mostly residences. There are two buildings built as stores, including one of brick; all the other buildings are wood frame. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.The town of Sandwich was first settled by Daniel Beede in the early 1770s, when he built a log cabin near Lower Corner. The village grew quickly, and was the site of Sandwich's first town meeting in 1772. By 1812 it was a prosperous country village, and was given the town's first post office. It was also the site of the town's first academy and congregational church, neither of which survive. The oldest buildings that survive date to the 1810s, and include a former tavern and a modest Cape style house. The Brick Store was built in 1845, and features ornate Italianate detailing, while the Wentworth Store, built in the 1830s, boasts more modest Greek Revival styling.The Greek Revival is the most common form of architectural expression in the district. Two house have full high-style Greek temple fronts, with two-story columns supporting a full-pedimented gable. One of these, the William Weed house, was probably one of the fanciest houses in town at the time of its construction c. 1850. It was eclipsed, however, by Chestnut Manor, located at the top of the hill. Built by Isaac Adams, a local who made a fortune in Boston, Massachusetts, it stands out because of its prominent location and its three-story tower, which is topped by a pyramidal slate roof and globe finial.

Sandwich is a town in Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. Its population was 1,466 at the 2020 census. Sandwich includes the villages of Center Sandwich and North Sandwich. Part of the White Mountain National Forest is in the north, and part of Squam Lake is in the southwestern corner of the town. As such, Sandwich lies on the boundary between New Hampshire's Lakes Region and White Mountains Region. The Sandwich Range of the White Mountains lies partially within the town, as does the namesake Sandwich Mountain. The town is home to the Sandwich Fair, a popular agricultural fair that occurs every October.

The Town Hall of Sandwich, New Hampshire, is located at 8 Maple Street (New Hampshire Route 113) in the village of Center Sandwich. Built in 1913, it is a handsome example of Colonial Revival architecture, and has been a prominent focal point of the town's civic and social life since its construction. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Hansen's Annex is a historic house on Main Street in Center Sandwich, New Hampshire, United States. Built about 1839, it is one of a small number of Greek Revival buildings to survive, out of many that once graced the town. It has seen use as a single-family residence, tavern, and boarding house. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and included in the Center Sandwich Historic District, in 1983.

Center Sandwich is a census-designated place in the town of Sandwich in Carroll County, New Hampshire, in the United States. It is the primary settlement in the town and had a population of 156 at the 2020 census. The village center and surrounding area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Center Sandwich Historic District. The village is home of the Sandwich Fair, held annually in early October.

The Cold River is an 11.9-mile-long (19.2 km) river in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the United States. It is a tributary of the Bearcamp River, part of the Ossipee River and Saco River watersheds. The river lies entirely in the town of Sandwich. The Cold River begins on the southern slopes of Sandwich Mountain, within the Sandwich Wilderness of the White Mountain National Forest. The river flows generally east and then southeast, leaving the national forest, passing New Hampshire Route 113A in the village of Whiteface, and reaching the Bearcamp River close to the Sandwich/Tamworth town line.

The East Branch of the Whiteface River is a 1.9-mile-long (3.1 km) stream in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the United States. It is a tributary of the Whiteface River, part of the Saco River watershed. The East Branch, never larger than a brook, drains the southwestern slopes of Mount Whiteface, a 4,020-foot-high (1,230 m) summit in the Sandwich Range of the White Mountains. The stream begins within the town limits of Waterville Valley and flows south into Sandwich, where it joins the Whiteface River.

Larcom Mountain is a mountain located in Carroll County, New Hampshire, USA. The top of the mountain, and its subpeak, Little Larcom Mountain, are part of the Lakes Region Conservation Trust. The mountain is named after poet Lucy Larcom, who visited the area frequently while staying at the Bearcamp River House.

Moultonborough is a town in Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 4,918 at the 2020 census, up from 4,044 at the 2010 census. Moultonborough is bounded in large part by Lake Winnipesaukee in the southwest and to a lesser extent by Squam Lake in the northwest corner. The town includes the census-designated place of Suissevale and the community of Lees Mill.

Freese's Tavern is a historic tavern and general store at 1011 Whittier Highway, the northwest corner of the junction of New Hampshire Routes 109 and 25 in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. With a building history dating to about 1780, and a continuous history of operation as a tavern, general store, post office, library, and town hall, it is one of the oldest establishments of its type in the United States. It is presently known as The Old Country Store, and includes museum displays on its history. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Moultonborough Town House is the former town hall of Moultonborough, New Hampshire. It is located on New Hampshire Route 25 in Moultonborough's main village, and is now home to the local historical society. It was built in 1834, and is one of the oldest town hall buildings in Carroll County. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, and the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Moultonborough Academy is a middle and high school in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. The school educates some 350 students in grades seven through twelve. The school is located off Blake Road, near the Moultonborough Central School (K-6) on NH Route 25. The school's range of subjects include Band, Computer Literacy, Latin, Spanish, French, and Physics. The academy's sports program includes softball, baseball, basketball, soccer, cross country running, track and field, tennis, Nordic skiing, alpine skiing, and the IL-MA football team which combines players and coaches from Inter-Lakes and Moultonborough Academy. The sports teams play in the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association (NHIAA) in Division IV. The baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, and Nordic teams have won state championships since the academy opened in 1979.Prior to 1979 most of Moultonborough's high school students attended Kingswood High School in Wolfeboro. Other students went to Meredith High School, to Quimby School in Sandwich, or to Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro.The town has a reputation for encouraging its students to participate in extracurriculars, which is thought to be essential to success at the school. Athletic events are widely attended, and the larger victories are consistently celebrated with support of the fire department.
