The Savage-Stewart House is one of the oldest buildings in Athens County, Ohio, United States. Located a short distance southeast of Canaanville along U.S. Route 50, it features many architectural details typical of expensive buildings constructed in early Ohio, and it has been named a historic site.Also known as the "Ackley Farm", the farm includes buildings constructed as early as 1804. The land comprising the farm was given to Abijah Savage, a Continental Army captain from Connecticut, as compensation for his military service in the American Revolution. Throughout the history of the farm, its owners have generally been more prosperous than many of their neighbors, due to the property's location along the rich bottoms of the Hocking River.Two stories tall and built of brick on foundations of sandstone, the house features elements such as an ornamental balustrade along the staircase in the hallway, a cornice with sawtooth-shaped molding, and fluted columns. Although the house falls into no distinct architectural style, these and related elements are typical of more expensive buildings constructed in Ohio soon after statehood.In 1980, the house and five outbuildings were listed together on the National Register of Historic Places, qualifying both because of their place in the area's history and because of their distinctive historic architecture. Although the house has largely been abandoned and overgrown, it was deemed historic partially because of the presence of antique farm equipment manufactured before 1930, which at that time was still secure in some of the farm's sheds.

Canaanville, Ohio

Canaanville is an unincorporated community in Canaan Township, Athens County, Ohio, United States. It has an elevation of 627 feet (191 m) and is located at 39°19′16″N 81°59′31″W.According to the Centennial Atlas of Athens County (1905), the community originally called Canaanville was slightly to the west, west of where Ohio State Route 690 now intersects with US Route 50. There still is an historic house at that location, at the intersection of McAfee Road with the connector road to US-50 at County Road 24A. The community now called Canaanville was then called Detroit. Both communities were originally on the railroad: at first, the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, which was later the B&O Railroad. Today, that line has been long since abandoned and obliterated. One of the oldest houses in Athens County lies on the east side of Canaanville, known as the Savage-Stewart House. For a period of some years, there was a restaurant and bakery on the north side of Canaanville, known as the Big Chimney Bakery because of the old chimney of a mining facility. When US Route 50 was upgraded to a four-lane divided highway, Canaanville was cut in two lengthwise. Today, there are roads fronting on both sides of the highway, each with a row of houses on the side away from the highway.

Strouds Run State Park is a public recreation area abutting the city of Athens in Athens County, Ohio, in the United States. The state park is located primarily in Canaan Township, with a small part in Ames Township. Park boundaries coincide with Athens city limits in several places. The park comprises 2,606 acres (1,055 ha), and includes Dow Lake, a 161-acre (65 ha) artificial lake. The park is named after William Stroud who was a share-holder in the Ohio Company of Associates.

Strouds Ridge Preserve

The Strouds Ridge Preserve is a project of Athens, Ohio, to create a greenbelt buffer and trail system on the outskirts of the city. This effort began in 2002, and has so far involved five parcels of land, for a total of 333-acre (135-hectare), in three discontinuous tracts. All these properties, which include the pre-existing 22-acre (89,000 m2) Sells Park, are contiguous with Strouds Run State Park.
