Ramsbury Manor

Royal Air Force Ramsbury or more simply RAF Ramsbury is a former Royal Air Force station, 5 miles (8 km) east-northeast of Marlborough, Wiltshire, England. Opened in 1942 to the south of Ramsbury village, it was used by both the Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Forces. During the war it was primarily a transport airfield. After the war it was closed in 1946, and today the remains of the airfield are on private land being used as agricultural fields.

Ramsbury is a village and civil parish in the English county of Wiltshire. The village is in the Kennet Valley near the Berkshire boundary. The nearest towns are Hungerford about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) east and Marlborough about 5.5 miles (8.9 km) west. The much larger town of Swindon is about 12 miles (19 km) to the north. The civil parish includes the hamlet of Axford about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) west of Ramsbury, and three smaller hamlets: New Town, close to Ramsbury to the southeast, and Knighton and Whittonditch, both about 1 mile (1.6 km) to the east. The 2011 Census recorded a parish population of 1,989.

Ramsbury was a rural district in Wiltshire, England from 1894 to 1934 around the village of Ramsbury. It was formed under the Local Government Act 1894 from that part of the Hungerford rural sanitary district that was in Wiltshire. It was abolished in 1934 under a County Review Order and merged into the Marlborough and Ramsbury Rural District.

Axford is a small village in Ramsbury parish in the English county of Wiltshire. It lies on the north bank of the River Kennet, about 3 miles (4.8 km) south-west of Ramsbury village and the same distance east of Marlborough.

Aldbourne ( AWLD-born) is a village and civil parish about 6 miles (10 km) north-east of Marlborough, Wiltshire, England, in a valley on the south slope of the Lambourn Downs – part of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. From here an unnamed winterbourne flows south to join the River Kennet 4 miles (6 km) away near Ramsbury. The 2011 Census recorded the parish population as 1,833. The parish includes the hamlets of Upper Upham and Woodsend and part of the hamlet of Preston, which straddles the boundary with Ramsbury. The village of Snap became deserted in the early 20th century.

Chisbury is a hamlet and prehistoric hill fort in the civil parish of Little Bedwyn in Wiltshire, England. Chisbury is about 4 miles (6 km) west of Hungerford and about 6 miles (10 km) south-east of Marlborough.

St Martin's Chapel, Chisbury is a mediaeval former chapel next to the manor house in the hamlet of Chisbury, in Little Bedwyn parish in the east of Wiltshire, England. The chapel was built in the early part of the 13th century, on the edge of Chisbury Camp, an Iron Age hillfort. There are written records of it from 1246 onwards and its surviving architecture is contemporary with that period. The walls are faced with flint. The windows have the remains of good-quality Decorated Gothic tracery that suggests they were added in the latter part of the 13th century. By 1496, the chapel was dedicated to St Martin. Because Chisbury manor was linked to Froxfield church, the rector of Froxfield received the tithes from Chisbury; sometime before 1246 he assigned this income to St Denys Priory, Southampton. However, Chisbury was within Great Bedwyn parish, and from 1247 the chapel was treated as dependent on St Mary's church at Great Bedwyn, although the priory continued to receive the tithes and appoint chaplains. Between 1496 and 1518 St. Martin's lacked a priest, but it was served again from then until 1547. Thereafter, the building lapsed from use for worship and was re-used as a barn. It was re-roofed with thatch in the 19th century. The hillfort, including the chapel, was designated as a scheduled ancient monument in 1925. The chapel is in the guardianship of English Heritage.

The Battle of Aldbourne Chase was a relatively small battle of the First English Civil War that occurred on 18 September 1643. In the skirmish the Royalist cavalry led by Prince Rupert attacked the extended columns of the Parliamentarian army of the Earl of Essex at Aldbourne Chase, Wiltshire, as he was attempting to get his army to London.The battle in and of itself was inconclusive, but it allowed the Royalists to get to Newbury ahead of Essex and ultimately forced the Parliamentarian army into a major confrontation.

Little Bedwyn Lock is a lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal, at Little Bedwyn, Wiltshire, England. The canal is administered by the Canal & River Trust. The lock has a rise/fall of 6 ft 7 in (2.01 m).

Little Bedwyn (also spelt Little Bedwin, and sometimes called Bedwyn Parva) is a village and civil parish on the River Dun in Wiltshire, England, about 3 miles (4.8 km) south-west of the market town of Hungerford in neighbouring Berkshire. The parish includes the hamlet of Chisbury. The Kennet and Avon Canal and the Reading to Taunton railway line follow the Dun and pass through the village. Little Bedwyn is served by Bedwyn railway station, which is about 1 mile (1.6 km) south-west of the village at Great Bedwyn.

Snap is an abandoned village near Aldbourne in Wiltshire, England. It is unusual in that it was not abandoned until the 20th century. The village was recorded in 1268 under the name of Snape. It was always a small place: in the 14th century there were 19 poll-tax payers, in 1773 there were between five and ten cottages, and at the 1851 Census the population was 41. In 1905, Henry Wilson, a butcher from Ramsbury, bought the two farms in the village and converted them from arable to sheep farming, which deprived the villagers of their work. By 1909 there were only two residents, and by 1914 the village was deserted. Most of the buildings were destroyed when the site was used for military training in the First World War, and were later plundered for building materials; only earthworks are now visible. The name is remembered in Snap Farm. The site lies near the Ridgeway National Trail.
