Poppy Factory

Cardigan House was a country house located on Richmond Hill in London. It was constructed between 1791 for 1793 by architect Robert Mylne for the wealthy publisher Robert Sayer, but in 1794 it was rented by the Duke of Clarence who lived there until 1797 with his mistress the Irish actress Dorothea Jordan and their children. It then passed into the hands of the Earls of Cardigan as a country retreat in what was still rural Surrey. Another large property, Lansdowne House, was located nearby. It should not be confused with Cardigan House in Lincoln's Inn Fields, the London townhouse of the Earls. In 1817 Lady Cardigan hosted a birthday celebration for the Prince Regent at Cardigan House. The scene was depicted in an 1819 painting England: Richmond Hill, on the Prince Regent's Birthday by the artist J. M. W. Turner. In 1925 the house was purchased by the British Legion for expansion of the Poppy Factory on Petersham Road. It was demolished in 1970. Its grounds now form part of the Terrace Gardens.

Richmond Brewery Stores is a building on 18 Petersham Road in Richmond, London, England. Built in red brick, it has a tiled facade with "RICHMOND BREWERY STORES" in white lettering on blue.[1] Further to the south along Petersham Road was the brewery itself. Known as Lansdown Brewery, and operated by D Watney & Son, it was registered in April 1895, but is known to have been in existence at least as early as 1882 when the brewery design practice Davison, Inskipp & Mackenzie was engaged to extend the building. It was acquired by Brandon's Putney Brewery Ltd in 1915 and subsequently closed. By 1923 the National Fire Protection Company Limited occupied the former Brewery Stores building. In 1950 the toy manufacturer Rovex Plastics Limited, which made plastic toys for Marks and Spencer, bought the building for use as a factory, and the company's own nameplate was placed over "RICHMOND BREWERY STORES" during the firm's use of the building. By 1954, however, it was becoming obvious that the factory was quite inadequate to produce the volume of goods and, following the acquisition by Tri-ang, the factory moved to Margate in Kent in 1954.The Richmond and Twickenham Times reported in November 2014 that the building, now owned by a property developer, will be converted into offices and flats.

Richmond is a town in south-west London, 8.2 miles (13.2 km) west-southwest of Charing Cross. It stands on a meander of the River Thames, and features many parks and open spaces, including Richmond Park, and many protected conservation areas, which include much of Richmond Hill. A specific Act of Parliament protects the scenic view of the River Thames from Richmond.Richmond was founded following King Henry VII's building in the 16th century of Richmond Palace (so-named in 1501), from which the town derives its name. (The palace itself commemorates King Henry's earldom of Richmond, North Yorkshire, the original Richmond.) The town and palace became particularly associated with Queen Elizabeth I (r. 1558–1603), who spent her last days there. During the 18th century, Richmond Bridge connected the two banks of the Thames, and many Georgian terraces were built, particularly around Richmond Green and on Richmond Hill. Those that have survived remain well-preserved and many have been designated listed buildings on account of their architectural or historic significance. The opening of Richmond railway station in 1846 was a significant event in the absorption of the town into a rapidly expanding London. In 1890 the town of Richmond, formerly part of the ancient parish of Kingston upon Thames in the county of Surrey, became a municipal borough, which later extended to include Kew, Ham, Petersham and part of Mortlake (North Sheen). The municipal borough was abolished in 1965, when local-government reorganisation transferred Richmond from Surrey to Greater London.Since 1965 Richmond has formed part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. As of 2011 it had a population of 21,469 (in the North Richmond and South Richmond wards). It has a significant commercial and retail centre with a developed day and evening economy. The name "Richmond upon Thames" often refers, incorrectly, to the town of Richmond: in fact (unlike the case of nearby Kingston upon Thames), the suffixed form should properly apply only to the London Borough.

Michel's Almshouses are Grade II listed almshouses in Richmond, London, located in The Vineyard, opposite Bishop Duppa's Almshouses and Queen Elizabeth's Almshouses. They were founded in the 1690s by Humphrey Michel. The original ten almshouses were built in 1696 and were rebuilt in 1811. Another six almshouses were added in 1858.The almshouses are now managed by The Richmond Charities. New residents are accepted from 65 years of age.

The Victoria is a Grade II listed public house in Richmond, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It is in an 18th-century terrace at 78 Hill Rise on Richmond Hill.

The Vineyard Life Church, Richmond, which is a member of the Evangelical Alliance, was formed in 2013 as the result of a merger between Richmond Borough Church and The Vineyard Church, Richmond. It meets in a 19th-century church building located in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. The congregation run a community centre, a food bank and a charity shop, and also use the building as a music venue for young people.

St Elizabeth of Portugal Church is a Grade II listed Roman Catholic parish church in The Vineyard, Richmond in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, south west London. It is adjacent to The Vineyard Life Church. Dedicated to a 14th-century queen consort of Portugal, it claims to be oldest standing Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Southwark.

Clarence House, Richmond is a Grade II listed house in The Vineyard, Richmond, dating from about 1696.It was built for Nathaniel Rawlins, a London haberdasher merchant, who lived there until his death in 1718. The Duke of Clarence, later to become King William IV, lived in Richmond in the late 1780s and gave his name to the property. From 1792 to 1799, Clarence House was a Catholic school run by Timothy Eeles. Among the students was Bernardo O'Higgins. O'Higgins is commemorated on the wall of the property with a blue plaque installed by English Heritage, for his role in the Chilean War of Independence.The building was used as a warehouse by Fortnum & Mason from 1941 to 1947. They had planned in 1943 to tear the building down and replace it with a commercial development.A private dwelling since 1947, it was owned by the actor Brian Blessed from 1967 to 1976. In 2012 the house was offered for sale, with an asking price of £22.5m. This was reduced to £18 million, and eventually to £14.5 million in 2013.

Bishop Duppa's Almshouses, Richmond are Grade II listed almshouses in Richmond, London. They were founded by Brian Duppa, Bishop of Winchester, in 1661 (during the reign of Charles II) to house ten unmarried women aged over 50.The almshouses were originally built on Richmond Hill. By the 19th century they had become dilapidated. They were rebuilt in 1851 in The Vineyard, Richmond next to Queen Elizabeth's Almshouses and the front arch and gateway from the previous site are believed to have been incorporated in the rebuilding. The new site was provided by James Ewing, owner of the neighbouring Downe House, Richmond Hill. He also paid for their rebuilding, in white brick to a Jacobean design by Thomas Little, receiving the old almshouse site in exchange.Numbers 8, 9 and 10 were rebuilt in 1949 after Second World War bomb damage.The almshouses are now managed by The Richmond Charities. New residents are accepted from 65 years of age.

It includes three groups of almshouses, a Grade II listed church (St Elizabeth of Portugal Church) and Clarence House, a 17th-century Grade II listed house associated with Bernardo O’Higgins, who is commemorated on the wall of the property with a blue plaque, installed by English Heritage, for his role in the Chilean War of Independence.

Queen Elizabeth's Almhouses are almshouses in Richmond, London, founded by Sir George Wright in 1600 (during the reign of Elizabeth I) to house eight poor aged women. Known originally as the "lower almshouses", they were built in Petersham Road, a few hundred yards south of what is now Bridge Street. By 1767, they were almost derelict. In 1767, William Turner rebuilt the almshouses on land at the top end of his estate in The Vineyard. Funds for the rebuilding were raised by public subscription. The almshouses were rebuilt again in 1857. They were damaged during World War II and replaced with four newly built houses in 1955.

Richmond and Putney Unitarian Church is a Unitarian church in Ormond Road, Richmond, London. The church building, dating from 1896 and designed by the architect T Locke Worthington, includes an apse with five stained glass lancers, dating from 1912, by Morris & Co. A rear extension designed by Kenneth Tayler was opened in 1966. The Putney congregation merged into the Richmond congregation in 1985.The Putney Unitarian Church congregation had met at the Wandsworth Unitarian Church, which was expropriated in 1967 for a road-widening project. Their new church on the Upper Richmond Road opened in 1968. After the Putney congregation combined with Richmond, that building, also designed by Kenneth Tayler, was sold to the All Saints Liberal Catholic Church.
