Castelo de Torres Vedras

Torres Vedras (São Pedro e Santiago e Santa Maria do Castelo e São Miguel) e Matacães is a civil parish in the municipality of Torres Vedras, Portugal. It was formed in 2013 by the merger of the former parishes Torres Vedras (São Pedro e Santiago), Torres Vedras (Santa Maria do Castelo e São Miguel) and Matacães. The population in 2011 was 25,717, in an area of 62.44 km2.

Campo Manuel Marques is a multi-use stadium in Torres Vedras, Portugal. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of SCU Torreense. The stadium is able to hold 12,000 people and was built in 1925.

The Leonel Trindade Municipal Museum is an archaeological and historical museum in the town and municipality of Torres Vedras, Lisbon District, Portugal. It is located in a former convent (Convento da Graça) on the southern edge of the city centre. In addition to an extensive archaeological section dating back to late- Palaeolithic times, the museum contains works of art from local churches as well as an exhibition relating to the Lines of Torres Vedras, defensive lines constructed under the orders of the British Duke of Wellington to defend against French invasion during the Peninsular war.

The Fort of São Vicente (St. Vincent) is located in the town and municipality of Torres Vedras, in the Lisbon District of Portugal. In 1809 it was the first of 152 forts, redoubts and other defences to be developed as part of three defensive lines between the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus that were designed by the Duke of Wellington to protect the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, from possible invasion by French troops during the Peninsular War. These came to be known as the Lines of Torres Vedras. Together with the Fort of Alqueidão, it is considered the most important fortress of those constructed for the Lines.

The Fort of Olheiros (also known as the Fort of Canudo) was a small fort in the town and municipality of Torres Vedras, in the Lisbon District of Portugal. Situated at 105 metres above sea level, it was the most northerly of all the forts and other military facilities built in 1809-10 under the orders of the Duke of Wellington during the Peninsular War, and commonly known as the Lines of Torres Vedras.

Torres Vedras (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈtoʁɨʒ ˈvɛðɾɐʃ] ) is a municipality in the Portuguese district of Lisbon, approximately 40 kilometres (25 mi) north of the capital Lisbon in the Oeste region, in the Centro of Portugal. The population as of 2011 was 83,075, in an area of 407.15 square kilometres (157.20 sq mi).

The Tholos do Barro (also known as the Tholos da Pena) was a Chalcolithic or Copper-Age domed tomb of block masonry. Its ruins are located on Monte da Pena, near the village of Barro, Torres Vedras municipality, in the Lisbon District of Portugal. The tholos was classified as a National Monument in September 1940.

The Castro of Zambujal (Portuguese: Castro do Zambujal) is a Chalcolithic age archeological site in the municipality of Torres Vedras in the western litoral area of the Centro Region, Portugal. The Zambujal Castro is one of the most important Copper Age settlements in the peninsula of Lisbon, and whose culture lasted until the beginning of the agrarian periods of Iberian history. Apart from being the most northerly discovered Copper Age site in Portugal, it went through two main building phases: an import-oriented phase and the second associated with the Beaker culture. Most of the artefacts discovered at the site are stored and displayed in the Leonel Trindade Municipal Museum, Torres Vedras.

Matacães (Portuguese pronunciation: [mɐtɐˈkɐ̃jʃ]) is a former civil parish in the municipality of Torres Vedras, Portugal. In 2013, the parish merged into the new parish Torres Vedras (São Pedro e Santiago e Santa Maria do Castelo e São Miguel) e Matacães. It is 50 km north of Lisbon. The name Matacães has a literal translation of "kill dogs" or "dog killer". This name has its origin back in the Middle Ages, in the period of the Reconquest and it refers to the killing of the Moors, who were at that time settling in the area. Landlords would give pieces of land to their servants to settle and farm as reward if they kicked out the Moors. A castro and a necropolis indicate that this area has been inhabited since pre-history. From Roman times there is a gravestone with astral signs. In the 18th century, the Portuguese and the British army fought against the Napoleon army in this area and its surroundings.

The Centro de Apoio Social de Runa is a residence for retired Portuguese military personnel in Runa, Portugal. The building was built by Princess Maria Francisca Benedita, and opened in 1827 as a military hospital, with an apartment for the princess. At that time, it was known as “Hospital Real de Inválidos Militares de Runa”. In 1934, the name was changed to “Asilo de Inválidos Militares de Runa”. In 1965, the name of the institution was again changed to “Lar de Veteranos Militares”, indicating it had become a veteran’s residence. In 1995, the institution assumed its present name, “Centro de Apoio Social de Runa”.The princess’s apartment is now a museum containing paintings, ecclesiastical items and personal effects. The museum does not have regular hours, and is open by special arrangement.

The Fort of Feiteira is located in the municipality of Torres Vedras, in the Lisbon District of Portugal. Construction of the fort began in 1810 as part of the first of the three Lines of Torres Vedras, which were defensive lines to protect the Portuguese capital Lisbon from invasion by the French during the Peninsular War (1807–14) or, in the event of defeat, to protect the embarkation of a retreating British Army.

Runa is a former civil parish (freguesia) in the Portuguese municipality of Torres Vedras. The community had 1004 inhabitants as of June 30, 2011.On September 29, 2013, the civil parishes of Runa and Dois Portos were merged to form the new civil parish of União das Freguesias de Dois Portos e Runa. Runa is the seat of this newly formed community.The Centro de Apoio Social de Runa, a former residence for retired Portuguese military personnel, is located there.
