The 1998 Adana–Ceyhan earthquake occurred at 16:55 local time on 27 June with a moment magnitude of 6.3 and a maximum intensity of IX (Destructive) on the European macroseismic scale. The total economic loss was estimated at about US$1 billion. The event occurred in Cilicia region in southern Turkey and killed at least 145 people and left 1,500 people wounded and many thousands homeless in Adana, and Ceyhan, the most populous town of the Adana Province, as well as many villages located between both cities along the Ceyhan River. The most casualties and damage occurred due to inadequately engineered buildings in the town of Ceyhan.

On 21 January 1972, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 registered as TC-JAC operated by Turkish Airlines crashed on approach while trying to make an emergency landing at Adana Airport. The aircraft was en-route from Kandara Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to Ankara Esenboğa Airport with a stopover at Damascus Airport with only five crew members on board after carrying passengers to Hajj the day before. After taking off from Damascus for the second leg of the flight, the plane had a cabin pressurization problem and attempted to divert to Adana. The aircraft had a go-around in its first landing attempt due to poor visibility. During the second attempt, the plane flew too low and crashed in a field 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) away from the airport, and subsequently caught fire. One of the five crew members died in the flames, while three others were injured.

With 5.1 million passengers in 2019, it is the sixth-busiest airport in Turkey. Opened in 1937, Şakirpaşa Airport is the oldest airport in Turkey that is still in public service.

Yağ Cami is a historical mosque located in the old town of Adana, Turkey. The structure was originally built as the Surp Hagop Armenian Apostolic Church at the second half of the 13th century during the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. It was converted into a mosque in c.1380 by the Ramazanoğlu Bey Şihabeddin Ahmed, just after taking over the city. It is the oldest mosque in the city and later on formed part of the külliye that also includes a madrasah.
